  1. They look great, I will be needing a replacement before too long for my ferrets as they have been digging at the air holes which have opened right up, one more season and they will be out! I prefer having separate sections though as when you've got your hands full and you open the lid and they all try and jump out it can be a bit of a juggling act to get them all back in. Last box I bought the guy had painted green with pet safe paint, but when it rains the green comes off a bit which is a bit of a pain. Does the Cuprinol paint stay put?
  2. Sorry to hear this. Ferrets can have underlying problems, 5 years isn't that young. Might not have been the fact you haven't taken her out of season yet, some people on here never take there ferrets out of season. I hope all the rest of your ferret gang are OK.
  3. Phoned normal vet about the fact Maisie could have worms. Told me that ferrets don't get worms. Went on Poo Patrol today...not a fun job, and found a worm in her poo! I don't know why I am so pleased, but hopefully it will mean she is ok once treated Off to a different vets tomorrow. Will treat all three of my ferrets though the other's haven't got thin just to be on the safe side. Thanks all you guys for all your help and Advice. Especially ferret1000 really appreciate it! Just shows you can't always reply on the vet for everything. Best to listen to guys with knowledge!
  4. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/160373-worming-tablets-for-ferrets/page__st__15 this post from a while ago someone needed to get wormer's for their ferrets and the vet told them that frontline does internal parasites too? Is this true? or is a worming tablet just for worms better?
  5. She has been spayed a couple of years ago. I'm a little worried that everything you have suggested has not been mentioned by my vet. She said nothing about worms. Nothing about the itching. Didn't tell me to change the food. Perhaps I should get a second check at an other vet. I'll ask her about wormers. There have been quite a few post on here about ferret worms and seems that a lot of people think that ferrets can't get worms due to having such a short digestive track- along with fur feather diet. I don't think there is an actually wormer licenced for ferrets; I think cat worm
  6. Thanks for all the replies guys, "everything has a sell by date mate " I understand this. Just want to make the rest of her life as happy as possible. The vet wasn't very optimistic, just realistic that she though Maisie would only have a couple of weeks/months left, I was just wanting her to be as comfortably as poss and I know many vets don't know much about ferrets and was just wondering she was perhaps missing something. "One of my older ones was like that while her sisters just went bald from April till October her Stomache swelled up each year due to her age the vet didnt
  7. Hi Guys just wanted advice about my Jill Maisie. In the Last two weeks my Jill has suddenly gone very bony- you can feel every rib sticking out but has now got big belly. She has moments when she becomes very sleepy and cuddly(this is not normal for her as I picked her up two years ago as a rescue and hadn't been handled much and was a real biter, she doesn't bite any more but not bothered about being handled) So I thought it could be an enlarged spleen or blockage or something so I took her to the vets and the vet told me that unless they go inside they couldn't tell exactly what was it is.
  8. It's cheaper to buy dry biscuits in bulk just keep it in a sealed container to keep it fresh. If you can talk to your nearest butcher they might put some of the scraps to the side for you from time to time. Which keeps the cost down. If you have the space for a chest freezer you can often find them for free really cheap on gumtree/freecycle which means you can easily store the stuff you catch in the winter. I go to car boots and buy babies cosytoes for the bedding in winter they only cost pennies and they are fur lined and easily washable, and old cotton sheet for bedding for summer. Undern
  9. Though I did say I had three to vaccinate and she told me it was £39something per ferret, and asked what discount it would be for all three and she said it's a set price. So will ring round other vets in area to see other prices, was cheap for the jill jab there though only £7 per ferret.
  10. Sorry to hear that. Poor Kenneth. I wish vets didn't charge so much for the vaccine. Phoned the vets today to see how much they were charging for CD vaccine and found out £40 a ferret if it was £5 a ferret then I would get it but I just don't have that sort of money. I always just go with trying to keep them safe by always changing clothes if an unknown dog touches me, wash my hands before handling them, things like that but it's so sad to see so many ferrets in rescues being put down due to this horrible disease. I'm keeping my fingers crossed all the other ferrets at that rescue make it if
  11. Looks good, well done for making your own, but I agree with some of the comments before. Carpet area, you don't want it too warm. In the summer it's a job to keep them cool anyway so keep it simple. Just put in a cotton sheet in the summer underneath them, and in the winter fleece blankets old clothes. A lot of people who do have dig boxes put it in a large run area in a removable box and remove it in the winter, if its permanently there they may go in there and us it as there litter tray or rain may get in and they are bound to roll in it. would have been easier to make one large run area
  12. I agree. If you came off your bike or get knocked off then would crush them. Maybe a large walking Rucksack, could put the ferret box inside and could fit a spade in too. I have a rack on the back of my bike I can carry loads in a strong bag(similar to the large lidl bags) strapped on with elastics. Can carry more like that, than I can on my back.
  13. I've got a large washing up bowl filled with water and brick at the bottom and by the side so easy to get in and out. I keep throwing a few ice cubes in there...so funny watching them 'apple bobbing' for them! Taken the bedding out but put a thin cotton sheet as a giant hammock as air can pass through it to keep them cool. My sister's Guinea pig's are harder to keep cool as they don't like water, don't drink much and won't lie in a hammock!
  14. first pull out all the ticks, then give him a wash, I put a couple of drops of tea tree oil in with warm water as it its a natural antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory but don't get it in his eyes. http://www.indianchild.com/tea_tree_oil_uses_benefits.htm Then put on the frontline as will kill any eggs left.
  15. I use the giant rabbit bottles as the nozzle is bigger and they are able to get more water out at a time, I used to have the smaller ones but I find they struggle getting enough out, they are there for ages. On really hot days I put bowls out as well, doesn't really matter if it gets tipped over, just another way to cool them down.
  16. I think that's pretty good really, if he's proven it saves you a lot of hassle of having to go back and forwards to the vets to have a new kit done. And if it doesn't quite go successfully people have ended up with unwanted litters so I think I would just go and get him.
  17. Well sounded like he did not know this...many people do not understand the workings of female ferrets. Quite a lot of people think you have to breed to take them out of season, and some do not know ferrets have seasons. Not all people do the research before getting them. and jsb... There are mixed feelings over taking Jills out of season. Some people never take them out of season and there ferrets are fine they do go out of season eventually each year these people often do not like the thought of putting chemicals inside there Jills ~(with the jill jab), or the vets nearby may be too exp
  18. You can get Jill jabs/ a vasectomised hob to take them out of season, You don't have to keep them in season?!
  19. Have you reported them as missing to nearest ferret rescue and vets as they might have been found?
  20. The more toys the better. Ferret wheels, tubes, drainpipes, hanging baskets, hanging old tyres, ball pit, sand pit, water tray, balls, hammocks, pieces of wood, boxes with holes in, anything new is fun to them!
  21. I did, paid £10 for it, If I had a few Jills that needed doing I would get a vasectomised hob though.
  22. If you search around there are plenty of websites that give loads of info...just do a search here's one for example... http://www.peteducation.com/index.cfm?c=11 It's always best to read up about an animal before you get one! Please don't breed, there are far too many ferrets in rescue's as there are, don't need adding to it. I have one spayed Jill, One Castrated Hob, and one Jill who is Jill Jabbed though will prob will also be spayed next year. Research into what is best for your animals. Vets don't come cheap so it's best to also consider this before getting a pet than have to d
  23. If you go to a vets that's part of a rescue centre its usually cheaper or phone around other vets as that seems pretty expensive.I payed £10 to get mine done. Some people leave there Jills to come out naturally but they are very prone to infection if you do leave them it can cause problems and even death, but some people just leave them and have done for years and haven't had any problems. Personally I wouldn't leave them in season. Try around for a vasectomised hob to borrow to take them out of season, or you could buy a hob and get him vasectomised them you wouldn't have to worry at all.
  24. or get him vasectomised NOT castrated.
  25. If you do pick up some 'second hand' ferrets it's always best to keep them separated for a while first anyway just to make sure they are not passing anything over to your healthy ferrets, I picked up a ferret from someone and kept it at a friends for a couple of weeks just to may sure it was safe to put in with my other one . Have you checked whether the gills are still swollen. That could show they haven't been mated, and if they say they have had Jill jabed you could always ask from which vet and phone the vet up to check? Personally though unless you have a lot of land to ferret on, and
