Mine are fussy buggers in that unless I open it right up for them and take some of the fur off so some of the meat is showing they wont touch it. Perhaps it's because there is only two of them. I think I had a big group there would be more competition and they would be more likely to tuck in.
-
Sorry to hear that, I always get very attached to mine. Its often hard to see what is wrong on the outside. Ferrets can be prone to cancer and other hidden illnesses and some vets aren't specialised in ferrets to know exactly what to look for. http://starescue.org...sses/4546687358 STA Rescue address above shares most of ferret illnesses. Its quite useful.

me too! I would worry to much to hunt with her I think. I worry about mine and she's not even small, just normal size, but against my hob she look petite. ...also surely It would be impossible to find a collar to fit, and the locator part would be as big as her head?!
-
I've always found scruffing them with a firm "no" does the trick. When feeding meat feed them by hand so they approach you rather than you going in and grabbing them. And I bought some ferret formula as they lick it off. stops them biting.

First time was funny, as a new item was inside the cage they all wanted to get on so it didn't move much, just rocked back and forwards. But it was the female that worked it out first! It squeaks but not that noisy. You just wouldn't want it indoors.
-
Noisy? Mine squeak's. I don't know if you can stop that, luckily down the garden so only can hear it if outside. Wouldn't want it inside though for those with inside ferrets...would be worse than a hamster in a wheel. But there may be a way to stop the squeak.

I have one, really good. Only takes 5 mins to put up. Good way of keeping them fit. Only took about 2 days for them to get the hang of it.
-
Mine aren't bothered by it. If someone in the next garden was having bonfire/fireworks that was close by and smoke came into my garden that would be the only time I'd worry a bit and bring them inside.

If its just from the tail its called rats tail- Rat Tail (aka Tail Alopecia) is where the tail begins to look like a rat's tail, with scaly skin, sparse, bristly hair, and blackheads. This is a harmless condition with no known causes. Aloevera gel works works well to wipe off the black heads. (from STA ferret rescue) http://starescue.org.uk/#/ferret-health-part-1/4541285457 Its quite a handy website for ferret health

The reason you might have heard it is some people have said that soft wood pine and cedar can cause respiratory problems. (links below) Though loads and loads of people use it and there ferrets are just fine just make sure you don't get sawdust, get shavings. http://www.ehow.com/facts_5568662_dangers-pine-cedar-bedding.html http://cyberpiggies.tripod.com/softwood.htm http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_use_wood_shavings_as_bedding_for_a_ferret

Well mine had lymphoma so she didn't look great anyway, but that was controlled with steroids. But at one point she went really boney, every bone could be seen. with big bulgy belly. So I did the poo check and I saw some worms in it so wormed her and she put on more weight and bulgy belly went. Had to put her down recently though, as she got the flu and couldn't get rid of it due to the cancer her immune system was bad. Keep doing a poo check, otherwise I would take it to a vet. Could be a tumour, hormonal, Adrenal disease? 'Weight loss due to a decrease in muscle mass, but

One of my ferrets has had worms before, gave it the panacur liquid soon sorted it out.

Some ferrets are funny with some ferrets but not others. If you take him to a rescue you can see if he wants to choose a friend. Loads of the rescues are over-run again this year. I don't think anyone would be happy on there lonesome.
-
Does he not have a friend in with him? He may be happier if he had company?!
-
Good idea...will head to my nearest pound shop to see if they have any.

I have a fur lined cat bed and fury blankets in with mine, they like to get right inside. plus I have a tarpaulin which I attach from top of there cage to the floor to stop the wind rushing in. The colder it gets the more bedding they get. And I'm constantly checking it hasn't got damp.
-
You should have more than one ferret anyway? they are sociable creatures and enjoy company.
-
Make sure you include as many toys as possible. Tubes, hammocks, wheels. Make sure its fully waterproof. easy to clean. locks on every door. Can include a litter tray (does make it easier if they choose to use it)

When I looked into making a hutch for the size I wanted the materials would have been too expensive. Perhaps its just that Cheltenham is expensive. I ended up getting a 10ftx6ftx2ft hutch someone made for my Cheltenham address, and buying several smaller ones and joining them up for when I am in Bournemouth. The 2nd method was pretty cheap as I got the 2nd hand hutches for £10 and £20 and joined them up with a toilet tube bought from b&q.

When the rain is coming in at an angle I put a large tarpaulin from the top weighted down with bricks and I pull it out at an angle so air and light can come in but rain will not and then put bricks at the bottom. Does the trick with mine.

Went to my vets in June as my Ferret Maisie had a lump and acting funny, and they diagnosed her with Lymphoma, and told me she would prob only live a couple more weeks- a month. She's still with me quite lively but I can see her lump in her belly is becoming more uncomfortable and know it will be right to get her pts soon. She's got a cold now as she is getting run down with the illness. She has been sneezing so much she has got a nosebleed. Her nose is so blocked she is struggling to breath. I have brought her inside, given her some warm bedding. Is there anything I can give her to make her

Great news! Something that can be sorted out. Hope the little one get's better! How long does the implant last?

Have you had a look on gumtree or ebay? Some times there are some good 2nd hand ones that people have made or a chicken coop. If you are only having a couple of ferrets a chicken coop would be fine for them- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Delux-ferret-hutch-inc-base-/251150637840?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Small_Animals&hash=item3a79be9b10#ht_500wt_1288 This would be so cool... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guinea-pig-hutch-with-run-Pirate-Ship-handmade-personalised-/130728993462?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item1e700e22b6#ht_500wt_1288

I bought some of that ferret formula. It does help encourage them not to bite. One of my ferrets I got second hand was a bitter. I made sure all meat was fed from my hand (which I cut up into small pieces) so she had to come up to me if she wanted any. Handled her several times a day, also got other people to handle her. If she looked like she was going to bite I said No in a firm voice, took a while to learn but keep on going she will be fine in a couple of weeks!
