How much saluki is enough in Irish dogs?
desertbred replied to Good Man's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
How long is a piece of string.? It is not as simple as what percentage of saluki should be in dogs to run in ireland or to run the Fens. The make up and quality of the bitch its lines and what it seems to lack in its qualities first has to be considered then what qualities would a saluki lining possibly put into the offspring. The are so many variants even in the saluki lines , some are chase dogs that wear the quarry down before the strike , others are fast cousers. The quarry to be pursued, the terrain to be ran on. It is not a one fits all scenario this is where a lot of linings tend to -

Ferretface If you read my post correctly I said it can run big and small land and can box them I didnt say anything about boxing them on small land so think you need spec savers. I was making an observation that that type of saluki would be a decent line to inject into irsih lurchers -
How much saluki is enough in Irish dogs?
desertbred replied to Good Man's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It would depend on the dog and its natural speed an example I have seen Tony Burns Sonny run one time it would catch no problem on the irish fields it is like a rocket and can run big and small land it has learnt its craft well and can box them -
See now your getting personal, the guy asked for opinions and that's my opinion. So pack the name calling in Nothing personal about it, just MY opinion. YOUR opinion isnt based on fact, its just a well rehersed pile of shit trotted out by those who know nothing about salukis. What people fail to grasp it takes a good dog man to work a saluki to its full potential especially these days

Legends are made by other peoples perceptions or imagination. In the case of dogs whether coursing, digging or any other working variety. The question is can it do what it was bred for? and secondly does it do it well. As some one pointed out in the present time of technology legends can be made on a keyboard. Word of mouth is also only a pointer as no two people will relay facts or messages in the same way. Seeing personally or on a video is a reasonable way of understanding capability. Any animal that satisfies the man who feeds it is a legend to them is it important that fame and noteriet

What you find with salukis especially pures they hunt for them selves not for you. They and x.s with a large percentage of saluki will think is it beneficial or of interest to them, this is one of the reasons why they tend to take time maturing and also get a reputation of being less bidable than other dogs. As for lamping ,your dog is only 1 year old let it grow up and mature at its own pace when you feel it is showing keeness more than that of a pup that will basically chase any thing that dares to move let it learn its trade on some easy daytime stuff preferably the long eared ones but bunn

if you just put a picture of your dog/pup usally the first one or two replies goes, nice dog/pup hows it bred so i reckon thats why people do it. but isnt it a big fall if after all the excitement and publicising of a pup if it jacks, after all wouldnt it be public embarassment as well as personal disapointment?? if it jacked then people will no not to go down that line of breeding.. but what part did the numpty on the other end of the leash play in it jacking ..did he flog the arse of it . did he run it with an injury /did he run it to young and spoil it? would they admit tothat,,

Wouldnt mind a dodge in the Battle of Britain PM me the details -
If you look at a lot of the purported studs that are about it is the ancestory that is relied on like from Khan Jihad LInes or from Merlin and Eve lines without any mention of what the dog in question has done so I agree with you totally let the dog get its feet dirty and get a couple of seasons under its slip then go into the lines . Incedently a lot of dogs are bulled up that much and lining bitches without even putting in full seasons peple will know the ones in question

It gives people an insight into what lines are being used and hopefully if progress reports are given it will show how the particular lines do on the ground. Although some put lines up to show how much they have supposedly laid out for a pup. Its down to choice I for instance have my dogs for my use and dont see the need to post lines which incedently I know for yonks

Plenty of closed season match making going on, some one get a comp sorted for the new season -
A good whippet is faster over 100 yds than most salukis or even lurchers after that the ground is quickly made by the longer legged dogs. Turning a whippet will turn quicker than any saluki or lurcher over a very short distance. I have a young whippet bitch she is 17 tts shit of a shovel but have a desert dog that will pull he back after 80yds.Turning whippet would be my guess fastest they turn on a sixpence

There has been to much breeding using a limited gene pool. The back yard breeders who use inferior stock and line young bitches with young dogs which themselves have not matured physically are undermining a breed that has top qualities that were from thousands of years lineage
