Nipper replied to guinness's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Follow the dogs, if they overlook a warren it needs more time!! I did a hedge today that was completely blank a few weeks ago. Got one and had another couple of runs out of it. -
Great stuff! Very enlightening for us as well! Keep them coming.

Ditch_Shitter the walls are closing in.... Up go the barriers of the closed mind. Why can't folk take the pros and cons out of any debate without getting paranoid

I think it's telling that you've obviously been quietly and determinedly digging for days, and That's the best you can come up with! I also notice No Where on that site do they appear to mention what They feed their castratii on. I'd be fasinated to know what purveyor of greasy sacks of carcinogenic crap are sponsering them DS _ I have just found the link and posted it, before going back and reading it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I haven't been digging for days. I ain't for or against the debate and if you don't believe me, that's your problem......

http://www.secondchanceranch.org/training/...meat/index.html I posting this as an interesting aside to the current debate. Let me know what you think.

Whoa, steady Neddy. RainmakerKennels I was attempting some light banter with C/G. I guess it didn't work. Sorry C/G. As for being a sales rep or having other vested interests, I am not and I haven't. I thought I was putting my point across. I guess the rabble don't like being called romantics. If you read my posts you will see the one that mentions having fed raw food in the past. It didn't have a name then, it was just dog food!! Now it is called BARF & RMB and there is host of fantasies attached to it........enjoy and I'll go back to making no posts

I refer to the RMB & BARF diets as romantic because it comes with all these airy fairy ideals such as my dog is a wolf, my dog will live longer and it won't have teeth problems etc... I used to feed tripe, whole carcasses and whatever else died on the farm at one time. I have kept a chest freezer used solely for storing dog meat. However, I now feed Working Supadog because it is cheap, easily stored, easily obtained and the dogs look great on it. No rotten teeth or smelly breath or flaky skin or dull coats or the constant need to worm (wolves don't get wormed).....! Don't tell f

C/G get back to your James Wellbeloved..............)

Best thing you RMB & BARF romantics can do, is to list where punters can buy the gear for storing, what to store in and what quantities to buy in to make the whole venture cost effective. As an aside, too much bone can cause ruptured large intestines from compaction. A painful and expensive condition to treat, even if your mate is a vet!!
-
No worries and no offence taken here! My mate reflects the realties of modern life, time is short! It is one thing to have these romantic notions and another to live them. I don't think racers think that it doesn't matter what they feed their dogs as their speed will only last four years. However, I do think that they will feed whatever they have to that will get them to produce their best form. If this was RMB or BARF then they would feed it. The fact that it is dried food says a lot! Quotes are made about the number of dogs with smelly breaths etc and my terrier doesn't have smel

My mate is a vet and he advocates the romantic idea of the BARF or RMB diets. What does he feed his dogs? The freebie samples dropped off by the Science Plan Sales Rep... It is true that vets do very little studying of nutrition, but also true that the boffins know what is going to enhance performance in running dogs as their business depends on it. Eg Red Mills. The hard and fast of it is that it doesn't matter about longevity in running dogs as their natural speed wanes around the four year mark plus anyway. Some people don't have kennels and it isn't appropriate to have lumps of

Pork is not recommended for dogs.

It's not that I don't care about my dogs, I do. It's just that I have gone through the rigmarole of feeding raw, making up a balanced diet and all the sheer effort of getting raw food at competitive prices etc etc.......and then it dawned on me. A boffin with a PhD has already done it for me and it costs £13 a sack lasts for a month and is so much easier. Plus the dogs look good on it and they still catch rabbits.

Supadog Working £13 per 15kg. Can't be bothered with all this BARF nonsense.

Is first cross collie greyhound fast enough
Nipper replied to pidge's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I had a half cross and she was plenty fast enough as she had yards of pace in her head! I think now as I get older that lurchers should be at least 3/4 sighthound as that is what makes them good, rather than the 1/4 something else. -
Unless Dekaw went back and edited his post he had written '1/2 Grey 1/4 Deer 1/8 Saluki 1/8 Whippet' which is mathematically correct!! Nice looking dog. My whippet did the same thing and it could be a bit irritating at times. She is 27 mths now and not as bad and I tended to talk soothingly to her to try and keep her confidence up when she felt threatened.

Golden rule of recall is to never call the dog when it is going to ignore you. Let him finish hunting and then call him.

“.........thing is, if you want someone to work FOR you, they need to be just bright enough to learn the job and then concentrate on doing it, but not so bright as to always be questioning why......." Excellent point. Too much intelligence is a pain in the arse and not required. Lurchers or londogs taken out from a young age and shown plenty of quarry should have enough savvy to do the job. I'm not an advocate of leaving running dogs until they are over 12 months before they see anything especially if they are going to be fast.
