If you've done a thesis on evolution, what do you think would happen if the hare continued to get hunted by dogs with greater stamina than them? Do you think it would adapt by going to ground etc and how long do you think it would take to become second nature.... Or, would nothing happen and it would simply die out....

It seems that from what has been posted on here that when an area is hunted to the extremes like the fens were, the hare will adapt. I wonder if that level of hunting would have changed the way the hare lived. Someone mentioned how he saw hares which were hunted often going straight to ground like a rabbit on sight of the dog. Now, if these hares bred and the leverets learned this behaviour and passed it on...... wonder where it would have all ended....

This is the reason why most saluki guys are taken as a joke..... there is several reasons why he wants feathers on his dog...... 1) will win more rosettes..... 2) more photogenic..... 3) Get more for the pups..... 4) get stud fees from good looking dog.... The way I look at it, its like fishing. You go into a fishing shop and most lures, flies, etc, are there to attract the fisherman rather than the fish. You'll catch fish with a hook and an earth worm.... FACT. Same with lurchers, feathers are their to attract folk rather than to add anything to the dog. The most ugliest dog on the planet

Romany you "think hares can evolve in a few generations" how long would you make a generation to a Hare? I have a report on a scientific study of the British brown Hare done by Surrey University. Open question to anyone: what would you think the life expectancy is of a brown Hare on average? Y.I.S Leeview Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I'd hazard a guess of 3 years.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about..... Do you think the hares on the fens will employ this line of thinking eventually? hares on the fens over the last 20 yrs have learnt to not use there gears as much, they know the animal behind em is a 3 gear dog not 5 gears,SO when a dog with 5 gears turn up dont they have a shock Bit contraversal that statement mate, you talking from experience?
