Now that's "Wor Gary"! You have no idea how much you are missed mate. Great to see you back shooting to form...even if it is a bloody pcp! Warmest regards to you and Darryl. Best wishes for your daughter's wedding. Simon

Best general purpose scope for close up & distance?
pianoman replied to GruffaloGriff's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Depends on the rifle and calibre you have Rob and what its trajectory characteristics are; plus your personal preference for type of reticle and of course what you have for budget. If it was my money for a fixed mag 6x scope, I'd be looking for a 6x40 or 6x42mm Objective. No bigger really. Nice and compact and everything as close to the bore as possible. I cannot say what you should be looking at or make any firm recommendations to particular makes. But, a fixed mag scope is not ideal for my type of shooting preferences. That said, check out Bushnell, Simmons or Leupold. They make some fine qu -
Best general purpose scope for close up & distance?
pianoman replied to GruffaloGriff's topic in General Airgun Discussion
This is not a question about which makes and models are best. "Hawke this", "Simmons that" Nope! They are all good. But that is an irrelevance to this problem. The true answer is about knowing how to use just the right amount of mag with the scope you already use that has the least false-trajectory focal distance error to correct. And that means a low mag setting. The higher you go up the Magnification scale the more artificial focal distance error you have to know to correct for at short ranges. In other words, the distance it takes for your pellet to rise in trajectory till it meet -
Whats the most unusual / nicest wild rabbit you've shot?
pianoman replied to Whizzie's topic in Airgun Hunting
Here's a hunting story for you. About ten years ago I was out static hunting, alone with my HW80 on a beautiful, balmy summer's evening at sundown in a really lovely part of my permission. I'd had a decent bag and the light in the sky was still like day at about 20:30-ish...when, out from the woodland edge about 40 metres away appeared this particular rabbit.... A big, really big male buck, full grown and very mature looking. I never saw him arrive, He just appeared sitting where there had been nothing a moment before. And he had the most expressively handsome face. Not gnarly and -
Hello Gary I was wondering where you'd got to old pal. Glad to see your absence is a cause of some good news rather than seeing another good lad having to sell a treasured gun to pay a rip-off water/gas/electric bill or whatever. Hurry up and get re-armed and back here posting more of your adventures with 'wor kid' Darryl. I've missed your brilliant write-ups mate. With warmest regards and best wishes for the big day.. Simon

Hi Chris. I do actually mate, I use a Deben Tracer lamp that clips via a connector to the scope and that drops my POI a little. I don't use it much nowadays. There's a lad with a 4x4 and a powerful spotlamp I go out shooting with in the autumn/early winter nights. I much prefer to shoot with a second pair of hands directing the beam. All the best mate. You ain't gonna give me peace are you....Laddie ?!!

I'm not entirely sure you have a duff pellet batch Chris , I've found H&N FTT are still superbly accurate generally for Weihrauch barrels at sub 12ft/lb power but not as precisely consistent, sizewise as they used to be from tin to tin.. Some I've found are loose or small enough to be .20 cal. in a batch of .22 and there are some that are a bit over-tight. These inconsistencies really show up in a high performance barrel as they are being blown with even more massive compression forces, expanding the pellet with greater energy faster down the bore lands. Also could be the rifle is s

I wrote informing her of the grave consequences for many people who work in the trade and everyone who enjoys shooting sports in Britain already under great restriction by stringent UK Firearms laws, who rely on mail order for scopes, spare parts, pellets etc as a major part of their businesses. Also and particularly the remedial benefits of shooting for the disabled, many of who will have no recourse but to use the postal services for maintaining their active involvement. I made mention of our abysmal no-show in the Olympics 10-Metre rifle final event because, thanks to the negative view

Gentlemen. I've had an email from Zoe Allchorn at Royal Mail in response to my original email protest at the above proposal. Quote. "Thank you for your well-written and reasoned thoughts....Royal Mail will consider all points of view regarding this proposal, before making any final decision." It still lies with everyone to make their protest heard and reverse this latest infringement on our right to enjoy our shooting sports. Regards to all. Pianoman.

Hi Chris. When my gunsmith tuned my FAC HW80 with a new Titan spring recently, he told me, it needed both himself plus his assistant with their spring-compressor, to compress it and fit it properly home. This is a long and massively powerful spring and it will bite like hell on an unwary hand! It sounds like you are using the same spec Titan. So, I really don't envy you if your doing this alone! Be careful mate and keep us informed how you progress with this HW80. Best wishes Chris. Simon

Hi mate. If nothing else, send my pal AndyFR1968 a PM about this. He's been a bloody wizard with servicing and tuning my spring rifles, so, it's a good bet he might know what's happening inside your Prosport...or not! Hope this turns out well for you and your rifle. Regards. Simon.

And a Good Morning to you too Mr Ghillies Sir!

That is beautiful craftsmanship sir. How much would a similar design on a buttstock with a rabbit or two cost to commission?

.303 Calibre Ratting Airgun test vs .177 Daystate MK4is
pianoman replied to The Ghost Maker's topic in Airgun Hunting
Hello Malc. This calibre needs a massively higher FPE level than sub-12ft/lb mate. It's just too slow. But the accuracy is impressive for all that. A 300 ft/lb PCP rifle would do nicely! All the best. Simon -
PYROGRAPHING Is this the means to etch wood with a heated scribing tool? (hence Pyro = Latin for Fire?) I don't know who does this but, I know of it. Sometimes known, I believe, as Pyrogravure. To etch or engrave with a hot instrument.

BATTLE? A typo for Bottle perhaps? Is this rifle a bottle-fed PCP?

Target Shooting In The Garden
pianoman replied to KurtH's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
If you watch the Monty Python And The Holy Grail movie, there is a sequence where a woman is being accused of being a Witch and the villagers want her tried for witchcraft. Sir Bedevere asks "How do you know she's a witch? To which come a bewildering series of replies and one villager says "Well, she turned me into a Newt....I got better...! This is no less the same bloody bullshit here with Kurt's neighbours! Someone got shot, at 20 metres? But they got better?? Next time there's a strong wiff of weed in the air, call the police and complain like hell to the council or the landlor -
the air arms comp(or how i got thrashed at fletching...)
pianoman replied to gurtwurz's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Oh dear me laddie. Sounds like you went out there and forgot everything you knew. So you had a cracking course, very well thought out by some malicious and calculating devils. So did Davy and Chaz have a hand in the design? Never mind dear lad. You write very well and I enjoyed your write up John. Now, what type of air rifle and scope was this young hot-shot using? .177 PCP? Better luck next time old pal. And I dare say you didn't achieve the lowest score on the day....Did you? Warmest regards. Simon -

A VERY Happy 12th Birthday for my Weihrauch HW80 .22
pianoman replied to pianoman's topic in Airgun Hunting
Thank you Malt. That's a sorry thing for you mate, but, your baby is your most precious priority and at least you did the right thing as a man and, a doubtless proud father and for that, I admire you immensely. But, there's other HW80s from their vintage days for sale out there and there's bound to be a mint condition example. I can assure you, you wouldn't regret the purchase. I bought mine when everyone was going mad for Pre-charged. It's still shooting as beautifully as the day it was bought. £230.00 from Guns International at Barnsley. Best bargain ever! Best wishes. S
