BSA Meteor MK4 .22 UPDATED on 03/03/2011
pianoman replied to davyt63's topic in General Airgun Discussion
A hell of a lot of work on here Davy but, top work on the resto mate. So worthwhile. These old BSA Meteors are like old Austin 7 cars. They got the world started with something. They may be basic and don't look much but, a whole sporting airgun industry grew out of the simple and accessible little shooting hobby these guns did so much to bring to everyone. You're right Andy; I for one have many happy boyhood memories of Meteors. From fairgrounds to shooting grounds. Simon. -
Sounds like the scope's very faulty if the rifle's new. You can very easily overtighten Allen screw scopemounts and crush the scope tube out of line. The only possible cure is to set the scope as truly centred as you can in the mounts on the rifle and "Anchor" the scope by cementing it into the leading or front mount with a strong Arraldite epoxy adhesive. This is a measure to combat scope-swivel or rotation in the mounts on rifles with a heavy snap-recoil. It works fine and keeps the scope in place and makes accurate zeroing easy. Being cemented to the front mount enables you to keep the

Loving the list guys. Makes a refreshing change from the usual Sherry decanter and six glasses

Let me add my warmest, heartiest congratulations to you both, Laura and Si. (See what I did there?!) Does me good to see two lovely people do the right thing by eachother. All the very best to you both. Simon.

A great day's shooting with Andyfr1968!
pianoman replied to pianoman's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Thanks to you all lads for your kind responses. Hi Ste. Andy was taking 5p-sized 60 yard groups from a casual looking seated position. That really made an impression. Watching him shoot, he was quite relaxed, very nicely poised, rifle perfectly shouldered, handled and allowed to recoil on its weight in Andy's hands, just as it should be. For me, it's good old military style prone, flat to the floor; Same-side leg bent high at the knee to stabilise and anchor lower torso; shoulder and hands sharing the supported weight of the rifle like a tripod. Get the breathing and pulse-rate. In both c -
Hey what can l say!! :laugh Thanks for your kind remarks lads, we really did have a great day's target/rifle workout. Andy you really are a great lad to know and I hope we can be friends for all time. I'm very lucky to have such a vast amount of farmland and woodland for a permission and, as you saw Andy, the shottie syndicate isn't up to much really. We can meet up on Sundays hereonwards if you like. Plenty for us to do here. Stevo, I'd be delighted to give you some spring rifle coaching sometime mate. Same goes for all types of rifle really. It's about correct hold, good lung/breat

Gentlemen. It is one of the nicest things in life to make new friends through something you really love doing, like joining this section of THL and sharing knowledge and experience in shooting and forging new friendships. Today was such a day when I had Andy over to shoot on my permission with my boy Josh and l. We pulled out my HW77, TX200HC and TX200 rifles and scoped and bagged up as Andy arrived at our house with his Diana 52 spring sidelever and Weihrauch HW90 gas ram -a rifle I was particularly keen to try. With bit of packed lunch from my dear Jo, we headed off to meet up with Ian

Cheap crap air rifles for bunnies
pianoman replied to Rake aboot's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I hear what you say there Simon and agree with some, but what I am trying too get across to people is that Chinese rifles have come a hell of a long way from what they used to be and are now far superior in quality to what originally got them such a bad reutation. My 19 is a duplicate of the HW35 and I would lay money on it that once I have a GRT from 'Charlie da Tuner' in the States installed, it will be as sweet to shoot as the original HW35 is. Somewhere on this forum is a thread that I put up regarding my last play with the 19 after not touching it for a year or more even. The groupin -

Cheap crap air rifles for bunnies
pianoman replied to Rake aboot's topic in General Airgun Discussion
sorry to demur on these matters but. l have given a fair hearing to cheaper spring rifles long before now and. l know what top level. reliable shooting requires. l'm not a wealthy guy. far from one. but my spring rifles are the very best you can buy. one of them. one of my hw80's was a 2nd hand near-wreck l had virtually given to me to have a go at restoring and reblueing. lt is now as sweet to look at and shoot as its as-new sister in my rack. lt serves to show how tough and eminantly restorable a top quality rifle is. and. they are in a class of their own when it comes to handling and razor -
Cheap crap air rifles for bunnies
pianoman replied to Rake aboot's topic in General Airgun Discussion
l wonder sometimes. how many honestly capable shooters there are with the know-how to shoot to a sensible range with a low-end gun Andy . not many mate l fear. l know l've tried a few guns from the ranges of smk. norica and gamo and l wouldn't have taken one of them out to hunt with. so poor were the triggers and the general twangy performance and handling. maybe l have been spoiled with so many finest quality spring rifles throughout my shooting life but. they are what turned me into the shooter l know l am. l surely know too that. given a choice between a brand new cheap-as-chips gun or a we -
Cheap crap air rifles for bunnies
pianoman replied to Rake aboot's topic in General Airgun Discussion
l can hardly put it better sir. l'm sorry but you just cannot come out with a piddling hundred and fifty quid budget and think that will get you into seriously and humanely efficient hunting. lt's got to be 250-300 quid at the very least and that's for a top quality 2nd hand rifle ... If you really give a moment's thought about the creature you are intending on shooting. -
lf l was a gunsmith with a shop to keep running l would stock only quality Weihrauch and air arms rifles like the HW80 97KT, HW77, HW90 95K, AA TX200HC and ProSports and classic BSA rifles in my new and used spring gun hunting section. Sure l would have the cheap stuff in but recommended them for plinking only. lf there are Hatsans and Gamos that can humanely kill a rabit at a guaranteed 35-45 yards shot for shot as the top guns can, l have yet to be convinced. simon

l use them in oth .l77 and .22 for my air arms rifles and l have nothing ut the highest regard for them simon
-
Well with an hw80 that's getting on for eleven years old this year.... lt's been barrel scrubbed one time only and it's as accurate as the day l bought her. My new hw77 is hitting a true one hole pellet-on-pellet group with washed and wd40 lued .22 h and n field target trophy ammo to as far out as l an shoot to and l won't need to clean the barrel for quite a few years time ahead. sorry for poor grammar. l'm having stikky keys and no-caps lok issues. simon

Thank you indeed Shay. You are pretty much on the money for a rifle for Josh. I was thinking of an AA S200 or Tench reg'd BSA Ultra. He's not a big lad for his age, about 5ft 5in, yet, he will pick up my hefty spring rifles, like my HW80 that dwarf him and he'll shoot away with it till sundown. He instinctively adopts a pleasingly correct hold with a spring rifle when he picks one up and I think he will be right at home with shooting a pcp accurately well.

Cheers Craig I am mate, very proud of how he's turning out. Andy. Crossbow, he'd love a look at that! But don't encumber yourself mate. Had a word with Ian this morning. He's about to start drilling and prepare his fields for Barley crops again so, there will be some bloody lovely rabbit sport this year, if the mixy keeps away please God By the way mate, what day do you want to come over; Saturday or Sunday or both?? You turn your back for a few minutes and before you know where you are..... I've finally packed Josh off to bed with a thousand questions per second about you all coming at me. Gentlemen you are all a small lad's hero right now. Thank you most sincerely to each and every one of you who have responded so generously. He had already signed up and posted here when he gleefully told me he's joined the section...! I'll be honest and thought "Oh my God!! They'll think he's Collie!" He really is a bright, polite, lovely kid and very respectful of anyone with the know-how he seek

Hawke Eclipse 4-16X50. Great on an Air Arms TX400 spring charged pnuematic .122 air rifle.

Hi jengledow and welcome to the section mate. You'll be much better served looking in the second hand sections for a top name spring rifle that WILL perform and give you a lifetime of faithful service and enjoyable satisfaction in owning and shooting it, than expecting a cheap-as-chips gun to perform the job equally well. You need more than "Reasonably accurate" to be able to guarantee a hit on a small animal's brain spot, shot for shot. You need precision accuracy. Sorry to sound like a gun snob but, given the power of the Law, I would ban a lot of Noricas, certain SMKs and Gamos fr
