Shooting My First Reloads...223
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well the hodgden website said oal of 2.210, which is what I went with, but I the vmaxs which I have been using are 2.223... What about you? I'll certainly load some more at 28.0 of powder and shoot them on a calm day... -
Shooting My First Reloads...223
DeerhoundLurcherMan posted a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I went for hodgdon cfe223 and 50grn blitzkings in the end with federal primers, loaded as per hodgdon website... loaded 4 rounds at 27.0g, 4 at 27.5, 4 at 28.0 and 4 at the maximum 28.5...... Measured out 100 yards and had a go....Wind was gusting to 15mph left to right.... The first 4 at 27.0 grouped like a shotgun... Then 3 rounds at 27.5... I dropped the 4th loading the magazine and pushed the bullet back in the case slightly... Then 4 at 28.0 which was the best group, before it opened back out... Then the 28.5s Then I put 4 factory vmax rounds th -
Same Old Question? (Maybe)
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to kimgary's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you want to be shooting rabbits over 100 yards and shooting a few close foxes the HMR sounds like the right tool... Edit to add, I would go with Charlie callers advice if you are going to reload... If not it would still be the HMR for me... -
Here We Go...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Thanks for the link Tremo... What signs should I be looking for with regards to the pressure getting a bit much? I'm guessing something on the cases? I was only keen to crimp as when I neck sized the cases I test fitted a vmax round in them an although they will all grip the round, some felt tighter than others... We are talking very very slightly.. Will this matter or should I use a light crimp to get them all identical...? -
Done a lesson in a car at 17 and thought... Na... Done my cbt and bike test... Started on a cagiva planet 125, Suzuki bandit 600, tl1000r, gsxr600, rsv mille, tl1000s, zx7r, gsxr 750, ktm 625smc, another rsv Mille and finally a zx9r... Used my old mans tuono factory for a while... I used to ride to fast on the roads... Got lucky a few times.. Saw my brother crash a triumph 955 at speed.. It's the best fun I've ever had bar nothing...5am on a Sunday morning on a big twin, front wheel up, massive grin... Couldn't do it now...if I had another it would be for the track...

So I bought a second hand LEE 50th anniversary kit with .223 dies and a lyman tumbler a few days ago and had a play earlier...This is my first go at reloading, so if you folks see something I'm doing wrong please let me know.... So first of all I chucked a bunch of once fired hornady cases in the tumbler for a couple of hours...They came out nice and clean...I then realized the die kit didn't have a neck sizing collet, only the full sizing die...So I went to the local gun shop and picked one up along with a new case length gauge...Then got it set up in the press and began, I checked each c

Trimming Brass...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Agreed! Be easier to go up in 0.5 with each batch to find which load my barrels like best then maybe tinker with the load that grouped best... Just two batches, both 0.2 each side of the load that produced the best group.... -
Trimming Brass...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I think I will try loading 50grn vmax and one other similar 50grn head... Load 5 of both types of bullet at minimum powder, then as I said, increase both heads by 0.2 of powder each time up to max load. Then pick the best group of each bullet... Then maybe very lightly crimp the two best loads (of each different bullet) and see if it improves either round... Then pick my overall winner and stick with it so long as I'm happy with the results... Expect more questions and a good thread to read soon!! -
Trimming Brass...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Really appreciate all of your advice so far folks.. I live 2 mins away from a very good shop that stocks loads of powders, heads primers etc...I can hold 150 rounds on my ticket... Now with regards to finding a round that my barrel likes... How far wrong would I be if I said that I would buy say 2 different types of heads... And load say 5 of each using the same powder but with minimum amounts. The load another 5 of each head but increase powder by 0.2 each time all the way up till the max load.... See which groups best?.... -

I've just bought a second hand lee 50th anniversary kit with lyman tumbler.. And the 3 .223 dies for £90 posted.. So I'll just need a few little bits and pieces and a loading manual.. Yea I'll stick to neck sizing only as they will only be used in my rifle... I've got 200 once fired hornady cases here so I'll keep count of how many loads they get through them... And I'll get the crimp die... I'll probably need help on how to use it properly... I've heard you can over crimp.... -
Trimming Brass...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Thanks for the advice folks! Whats the crack with full length re-sizing and only neck sizing? My initial thoughts was that FL re-sizing was for if the brass had been used in a different rifle to the one your loading for? Am I right in thinking that the de-priming die also re-sizes the neck and a totally different die is used for FL re-sizing? Cheers! -

Trimming Brass...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Obviously they have a maximum length...and will need checking... But how many loads will they be good for until they will need a trim? Or is it good practice to include the check and trim into every loading session? Also how many loads will I get out of .223 brass...? -
Just trying to learn as much as I can about re-loading before I get stuck in... Do you trim your brass each time you load it or every few loads? Do some calibres stretch brass more than others? I will be loading for my .223 and have 200 once fired hornady cases.... will they need trimming for there next load? Cheers! Ps expect more questions soon!!

To Reload.....or Not...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think if I can put a group inside an inch at 100m and they cost me half price I will be happy enough not to get silly.....I'm not a target shooter, just want a little better than 1.5 inch at 100m, which I don't think is much to ask....And if it works out cheaper, I'd be mad not to -
To Reload.....or Not...
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Right folks, after watching a few vids on youtube I have made a list of all the things I think I will need....Please correct me if I have given anything the wrong name or anything else I will need, or anything I wont need.... A press case lube de-primer / sizer die? tumbler and media primer pocket cleaning tool digital calipers case trimmer de-buring tool flash hole cleaning tool primer seating tool / or use press? powder dispenser scales bullet seating die... and obviously primers, powder and heads... Am I better off buying a kit or buying the bits individually? Any b -
Zeroing my .223 yesterday in perfect conditions and was getting roughly 1.5 inch groups at 100m and then the groups gradually got wider, ending at about 2.5 inch groups at 200m... That was using factory 40grn Vmax rounds... Now realistically that is perfectly fine for me to shoot foxes with... But I still cant help but want to see tighter groups... I got my .223 back in September and have put just over 200 rounds through it...which will have cost me a little over a £1 a go.... How much is it going to cost to get everything I need to reload? Is it worth it for the amount I use i
