Last Night With The Pup (Blitz) And Cocco
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to Lamping89's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Personally no I wouldn't, I cant see what benefit it will have on a pup. But I can see the pup might get frustrated being made to watch, and possibly yap. Or when the dog is old enough and you take it out with another dog it may not give up its catch so easily if there's other dogs about, which could mess up any retrieve training.... I would sooner take the pup out and lamp rabbits for it to watch in the beam. When its ready.... Just an opinion mate, everyone's got one. -
Last Night With The Pup (Blitz) And Cocco
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to Lamping89's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The pup doesn't have to be running about to ploughed into at 30mph. My dog has ran into me before and took me off my feet!! Could kill a pup outright... Not trying to sound a c**t but its just the first thing I thought reading the post... I don't think pups need schooling by experienced dogs either, when the pups ready it will pick things up for itself. More likely pick up bad habits IMO... Good luck with your pup -

A few from today... -
Great thread cocker and some great pics, same as everything else, it always seems like I should have been born 30 years earlier...!! I enjoy listening to my grandad talk about his dad and the greyhounds he kept. He said one of his best dogs was bred in Ireland, sired by Pigalle Wonder, he told me of good times throwing cash about in the back of cars on the way home from races, and he said he used to take them out coursing "to keep them keen" haha. I hope I will be telling stories of good days out in 20 years time.

With older cars I always think the running costs are going to be higher, my P38 cost me at least a grand a year in parts and servicing. If someone had a jap 4x4 of the same age would they really be spending that much less? Typically you are right running costs are going to be higher in older motors. But there are exceptions. My series is 20 years old this year, they are over engineered in every way. From the quality of metals used to the big refined de tuned engine that gives epic reliability. Even today when people need a vehicle where there life could depend on it they choose 20 ye

How To Zero .17Hmr
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I lay in the back of my truck and zero off a bipod.. I shoot 5 rounds and take an average then adjust accordingly... -
I had a 2002 Td5 which to be honest I did like, but wouldn't have another, constantly needing new parts. It had over £7k's worth of receipts! I now drive a series landcruiser diesel.....And 5 grand would get you a nice one... Failing that I would go for a hilux or landcruiser Colorado, but neither comes close to the !

Firstly, A house with no mortgage would make me a very happy chap. £400-500ks worth. Nice big garage/workshop/kennels ect Do a few quid on motors, the misses a nice fast estate like the Audi rs6, Then I would go for a dodge ram 2500 4x4 5.9 straight 6 turbo diesel and tune the fu*k outa it... A good holiday for us.... Then what ever is left into either a business or property... My old man said he saw his uncle go from being a fit strong bloke to a weak pale mess in a hospital when he was in his 40s, he had leukaemia. His last word to my dad was if you want something, and you ca

Wellies... I Feckin Hate 'em..!!
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to Bosun11's topic in Hunting Boots & Clothing
I done £165 on a new pair of le chems today, had the hunters before and wore them out after a year or so....I tried all of the gooduns on and went with the chems because they was marginally lighter and have a 2 year warranty.....I'm in them for an hour a day weekdays and a few hours on the weekends so had to be comfy.... But to be honest the neoprene lined hunters felt just the same and I think they was half the money.... -
Just re-read your post articgun... Maybe you can answer my question? Cheers
-
Has anyone had both a pure saluki and coursing bred dog? Is there much difference with regards to training and behaviour between the two? eg: do the pures have a more sensitive nature? ect.... Cheers...

If that was my dog, and it bit me like that in those circumstances, it wouldn't live to do it again....

Training Advice On My Pup
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to Kieran90's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Get a old teddy/fluffy toy and play tug with him for a bit but make the teddy as exiting and as life like as you can, then throw it. See when he picks it up where he takes it. He might bring it straight back, if he does he wants another game of tug, which you should play straight away!! If he goes to his bed or crate ect you know where to position yourself next time you throw it....When he learns that he gets that predator stimulation that he will crave playing tug with you he will want to bring it straight back every time... It's worked brilliant for me so far, even an old plastic bottle -
might trust you but others not so much? hope it did work tho Probably not, that's why I'm the only one who feeds my dogs once everyone has gone to bed, and I watch over them while they eat. When the pup gets bones, he goes in the crate... From my point of view the gaining trust thing worked so well, it seems madness scruffing the dog to break whatever trust you may already have, in fact it sounds like going backwards! This was with a pup though, maybe an older dogs different?
-
My pup did the same at about 15 weeks old. After some really good advice I decided not to scruff the little c**t, Instead I put an empty bowl in front of him, then piece by piece put small meaty bits in. He soon learnt to trust me around his food because I didn't take any of his food away!! I understand now that dogs are more aggressive over bones because they cannot quickly be gulped down, so there worth fighting for in their eyes.... With that trust now in place he allows me to take anything away from him, because he knows he will get it back (maybe moving him to his crate to finish

We are talking one parent "coursing bred" not saluki/greyhound.....
