Go steady with the minced chicken carcasses, you want minced chicken really and throw in the odd carcass or whole wings, to much bone will make the dog constipated...

Tried taking the dog ferreting? Could soon learn that YOU find it those things to chase, that it clearly craves...I'm sure the dog would soon start paying attention to you when the dog susses out what you find for it...

If there is something to hunt, like a rabbit, squirrel or a jack russel, then hunting comes first, recall comes second. That's the way with my 12 month old saluki lurcher...I knew it was going to be like that before I got him...No point shouting and screaming at him, its just the way he's wired. He wont piss off out of sight though...Need a good bond I think...

Back round on the chicken farm Friday night... See one in a big grass field, but as soon as the light hit him he turned and ran straight to cover, tried a loud squeak to make him stop and look back for a second but he carried on straight into cover... Next field, sat in the long grass was a fox about 80m, but wasn't a safe shot, so lights out and crept round to the side of him, Lamp on and wham 50 yard head shot... Short snout on this one...But in good condition, been on the chickens no doubt... So happy farmer again... Then last night back out on some wheat stubble, rabbit shooting f

Remington 700
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to hargreavesheber's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
When looking at buying a new rifle (.223) I looked at the cz527, a bolt, x bolt, remmy 700, and the tikka t3. The Remington felt crap, like the stock had just been made from the bumper of an old van, and I think it cost more than the a bolt and cz, The xbolt and tikka was by far the best, followed by the cz.... When we are out shooting, we shoot from a suzuki vitara 1.6 petrol which is very quiet and ticks over smoothly enough to shoot from, but a big diesel engine will rock about a bit and be a little noisy... For us.. Engine on for rabbits and off for foxes...

I've had my FAC about 18 months, I originally applied for a .17HMR and a .223 and was knocked back due to not having enough experience, I had only owned shotguns and air rifles before...I was granted a .22lr... At the time I was gutted and thought if your safe with a rifle your safe with any rifle. But after shooting my .22lr for a year, and now just having had my .223 for a week, looking back it was defiantly the right decision by the FAO...

Kept mentioning it casually then asked but got a polite knock back and then I kept a watch on how things seemed to be getting worse, a mate said he reckoned he knew the guy that was supposed to be on here so I went back and spoke to them again, had my risk assessment and insurance focus ready and it went off and I hot a letter back? Now I'm itching to get out there but don't want to just turn up and do nothing so I've been doing a lot of photo taking so I'm all planned out for where and when the best times seem to be on the perm Funny old game getting permission, me and my shooting buddy

New Rifle, First Night Out....
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I know your a fan of the Nikkons CC, What model do you use, and what mag do you have it set on for lamping foxes.? I need a scope for about 200 quid, which will get me out to 200 yards tops. I'm not going to blow my weeks wages on a S&B, I don't need one. I just need a good enough reliable optic that will get the job done. I like the idea of a fixed 8x56 but not sure if I would prefer 10x, 12x or more! I certainly don't want to be zoomed in to much that i struggle to find the fox at 50 yards lol. Been thinking Nikkon, Bushnel, MTC..... A nice simple reticle to, no green or red -

Just reread that, with a varmint barrel, a decent mod and a good scope i would imagine you would maintain the sight picture quite easily -
Nice one hutchey, was you just knocking doors? I'm going to start looking for a bit more ground soon.

New Rifle, First Night Out....

After shooting a .22lr for a year the .223 makes it feel like a toy. Its got some serious poke to it... I saw at least half the shots hit and the fox drop. With a better scope and a bit more practice I'm sure I will see it hit home every time. It kicks a little bit but certainly nothing to be worried about. The trigger is lovely on the tikka, and no flip with the mod on... If the gun didn't inspire confidence in me I wouldn't have taken those longer 150ish yard shots. When i put a better glass on the top ill do some longer range targets. I don't think there will be many safe foxes -

Cheers, the bloke I bought the gun from said he had used 60 and 64grn berger rounds through it giving inch groups at 100 yards. But I think ill stick with the 55s for now.. -

New Rifle, First Night Out....
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Cheers Dan, nothing to it mate, just plenty about and covering a lot of ground. they certainly wasn't lamp shy, we could pull in a field and just whistle, most of them never gave us a second glance just carried on sniffing about. Your not wrong terryorr, I wasn't sure if I would be able to tell if I'd hit them or not after reading about muzzle flip, flash and recoil. But theres no mistake, you know straight away, didn't kick hard either, could see them drop through the scope, that one by the bullrushes leapt 3 foot in the air before dropping stone dead...strange that... -
Advice Needed Please.
DeerhoundLurcherMan replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Don't call them unless you need to, you have a gun that you are confident with to over 200 yards!! You can use that to your advantage if you know the land well. Driving the fields you will cover lots more ground, and see lots more foxes. I wouldn't fancy sitting about kissing my hand in an area where they are shy. We moved about loads last night, scanning fields and as soon as we saw them eyes the lamp and motor was off, lamp back on ready to take the shot... Good luck.. -

Cheers Bigad, Started a new thread, First Night, New Rifle... -
So following on from the "finding a rifle" thread, after getting to grips with what a centerfire is all about, I took my tikka .223 out tonight on some permissions, First stop a chicken farm, accounted for my first fox with a CF, taken at just over 100 yards, sat facing me, chest shot, clean kill. Next a new permission which boarders another two bits of ground I have permission on with fox problems at lambing time, accounted for number 2 and 3, number 2 was just mooching along some woodland, dropped on the spot with a head shot at about 130 yards, number 3, round the corner on the edge

With it being my first go with a centerfire, shite scope and being a bit windy I'm happy enough.
