Coursing Dogs / Saluki Dogs On Deer??
Allan P replied to deerdogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I have found working any quarry in Woodlands on a regular basis results in the dog being laid up from time to time busted up and badly cut feet, legs and chest occur fairly often because of debris on the floor. -

I might not be explaining myself very well or I might be talking utter shite. But if I had a Bull cross and a Saluki cross and neither had done any conditioning and ran a hare the Saluki cross would put up a better show due to its genetics than the Bull cross or any type for that matter. So that’s my thinking behind having a Saluki based lurcher. -

To be fair that’s applicable to all Lurchers. -

Thanks for the feedback and I do understand the need for fitness and conditioning and I am certainly not fooling myself, in fact the total opposite . With working away it is difficult to keep the dog fit and by my last week at home we are getting somewhere. I’ve read quite a lot about Salukis and my thinking is that something with Saluki once fit will have a better BASE fitness and the wife can keep it ticking over walking and jogging and possibly on a running machine. Also I want something with tough feet and can take a few knocks. As I say I’m probably miles off the mark with my thinking but -

I’m swaying towards something with Saluki or possibly fox hound for my next dog. With me being away for 3 weeks at a time even though the wife walks and jogs the dog whilst I’m away the fitness obviously drops. My thinking is and I’m probably miles off the Saluki or Foxhound would naturally hold a bit more stamina. Probably just wishful thinking, but you never know. -

Really not sure mate, see what’s about at the time. I basically just like mooching around and knocking stuff out of cover these days nothing to serious. -

Here’s mine 8 years old now and pretty much retired with Arthritis and a supposedly dickie heart. Bedlington Bull Greyhound, decent enough in his day and still has a fantastic nose on him. The pictures are from a few years ago.- 228 replies

I knew those guys ,moved from Newark 20 years ago but still have family there. Great times growing up around that area. Me and Dickie C used to spar regular back in the day.

Juckler you mention Newark a few times in your posts, did you ever drink in the Ossington Hotel by the Castle. I know a few lads from Tolney Lane who used to. I’m talking early 90s.

Yep, I’ve read it again and I think you’re right.

He was a decent size, can’t remember the percentages but def Beddie whippet greyhound.

I had one, good on anything edible. Was around 25” smooth coat and a pleasure to have around. Great temperament and just a decent dog. He was around 11 when the picture was taken had him pts a year later with cancer.

If you can find a raw dog food supplier they will take all game marked or not.

I’ll have a look out for it, lots of stuff on YouTube for Ultras really good for some motivation.

Anything under 40 mins for a 10k is great time. I run but more into longer distances because I’m not fast and just plod on and prefer trails than roads. Good luck with your 10k and your dog who looks in great shape btw.

Lots of Running dogs will mouth the back of the necks of other dogs while playing it’s in their nature. But the owners of the other dogs just see a great big fit looking dog attacking their beloved pooch. Also by picking it up and swinging it round getting a bit excited doesn’t help matters and only escalates things. At the end of the day it’s probably best not to put yourself in that position with other less knowledgeable dog owners. Also what time you doing 10 miles in?

That’s what people say when they only have a little one. -

A good big one is better than a good little one for this type of job. That’s what I think anyway. -
A lot of people are very judgmental these days, just seems to be the way sadly.

It’s colour for me, definitely colour.
