    Beak Trimming

maybe a silly question, but birds in the wild don't have someone filing their beaks for them, yet it seems to be needed in falconry, what do they do in the wild, that they cant do in captivity??? when I kept african grey parrot, we had special stone perches that the parrots filed their own beaks on, do you have that in falconry?
  2. the farmer has asked you to carry out pest control for him? pigeons fall into the pest species category surely those who are renting, running a syndicate are shooting game, totally different from pests
  3. well,, that lot confussed me, so here's my take in laymans english you already know what distance your crosshairs are set on, say 40yds for argument sake, you look through the scope, with the parellex set high, say 150yds, the picture through the scope will be blurry as hell, slowly wind in back, whilst looking through scope, as the picture becomes spot on clear, look at front of scope, and the yardage its at, now it may so 50yds, so you know you need to aim a bit higher with your crosshairs, in all honesty Ive never found them of much use on air rifles, more usefull on the rimfires
  4. . stubby I have seen this riffle and where did you see it???? an idea of location would help
  5. I have the P7 and use it on my rimfire with green filter, also use it on the 410 hushpower, Id say its good to around 60-80yds
  6. where bouts are you mate? any pictures
  7. yes if its on farmers fields, no if its in the garden, there always has to be a good reason, even with pests, many people will get away with it for years, until one person complains
  8. cheers and i can tell THL is a good forum it just has a couple of negative people that like to bite i hope you didnt take it the way stubby toke it i wont bother next time well neither will I then matey, I actually looked at this post, because I saw it mentioned maidstone in the title, having just bought 7 acres of woodland around those parts, I thought I may have been able to offer you ferreting permission, my reason of "biting" as you put it, is you seem to be just starting out, but dont want help/advice unless it fits in with this plan you have, rather than experience of lo
  9. ear defenders dont buy cheap, you cant replace ears everything else is not needed, well apart from your gun, stick carts in your pockets, aint the guys you go with got all the gear, if so, use theirs, or see if they have bits spare to sell you cheaply, more likely to help you if they are mates and no your situation, rather than a forum where no one knows you from adam...
  10. so you come on here asking for help and advice someone with 20 plus yrs tries to give you some you ignore it, with the comment, this ferrets good as its caught a rabbit........ your talking out your ar$e, there is no need for you to start breeding ferrets, take the advice of others, theres to many unwanted kits come breeding time dont try running before you can walk
  11. the birds that are not moulted like the pets control birds are only there to scare the gulls away and not catch them so what u have is a sports car running on diesel as they feathers will drop but the bird will not have a complete set like in the moult, a sports car run on high octain full will do what it is designed to do,the reason we moult as we do is to have the bird in as perfect condition as possible thus making the sport more enjoyable yup, thats how it was described to us yesterday,
  12. that surprises me, days are still short
  13. Why do you need to wash it? not so much why, buy why not ferrets love water my daughter used to take ours in the shower with her, its bonkers watching them play under the spray, not too often as it will wash off the oil's in the fur
  14. I wont get into chatting about molting yet, as we don't cover that till Thursday, lol and I don't expect to be fully knowledgeable with just a weeks course, although we do sit an exam on Friday, but our instructor, is anti falconer, more bird controller, yes I know this will open a can of worms on here but he has pointed out, falconry birds are put through a yearly moult, but bird control birds are not, as stated, until we cover this in more detail, I don't have any answer's as to why
  15. that's all been covered, I wouldn't be silly enough to cage it 11 months out of 12, but use it for personal use mostly, with a little depot work, yet get paid for it
  16. well 2nd day and it gets better and better, the instructor is great, but also has had talks with my manager, basically I'll end up with a female harris, a pay rise (yet to be agreed on amount) most of the kit bought for me, aviary/mews built in my garden, transport boxes paid for etc, and my role will be to look after the other two birds (male & female harris) when the day tech goes on holidays, 4 weeks per year, may get to take my bird out once a month for work related stuff, rest of the time its down to me...
  17. just make sure the hawk is ok with a ferret beforehand,
  18. well, today was my first day of a week long falconry course, and I bloody love it, my homework was to learn to do the falconers knot, sorted, and am looking forward to the rest of the week, I may just take up my bosses offer and have one of the Harris hawks at home, with a good pay rise of course
  19. Im doing a 5 day course starting this monday, purely for work related stuff (they are paying) should be interesting
  20. if he holds an open ticket, the land does not need to have been checked, its down to the certificate holder to asses if its safe or not, roads and public footpaths do not make an area unusable for FAC, mine is criss crossed with them,
  21. green is the easiest colour for our eyes to focus on, which should therefore make it better, I use both red and green at different times, dont see a lot of difference
