  1. and their skin's so thin that the bites they take become rips
  2. I've lived in county cork for over 20 years now. It doesn't really affect my choice of dogs as I've always got along well with collie grey types and still do. I have one now that's just over a quarter collie and use her for ferreting and lamping and for walking woodlands, clearfell and mountain in the daytime. She's tough with good feet and reasonable nose. Like many of her breeding she can sometimes be a bit halfhearted on difficult daytime rabbits but does great at everything else.
  3. Hope you have better luck from now on Gaffer. I don't know what's happened to the veterinary industry in the UK but whatever it is I hope it doesn't happen here. I had a wound on my bitch stitched last year and she got a shot and tablets. The stitching took maybe 20 minutes and the bill for the lot was around 40 euros if I remember rightly. If half that was for the drugs they're still making 60 an hour. I always make a point of asking "how much is this likely to cost?" as it does no harm to let them know it's going to make a big difference to you. Some would say that veterinary insurance in
  4. I've had a dog chased off by a sheep. I was walking towards a field of sheep near where I lived when one of them charged across the field, smashed straight through a wooden fence and chased the dog home. The rest of the flock stayed put. It turned out to be a bottle reared lamb that didn't want to be a sheep. I had to drag the fecker half a mile, holding onto it's wool to get it back into the field. This was in the early eighties. The dog wasn't a total coward either. He went on to catch roe and foxes after that.
  5. I agree entirely, but the line must surely be diluted by 50% as soon as you outcross ? Cheers. Sure ,but then you cross back into the line . The outcross then is only diluted by 1/4 and you would be fixing the genes of the line which would be stronger So you'd take a pup from the "outcross". and put it back to a dog/bitch from the origional line ? Yeah, of course thats done, but it still dilutes the "origional" line; that's my point ! Dare I use "Minshaws" as an example ? If a Minshaw is put to a pure Collie or a pure greyhound, are the offspring "Minshaws" ? If a pup from the cros
  6. I used a car spot with part of a wooden tent peg for the handle and a bell push for the switch. The bell push was handy for flicking on and off instead of rocking the lamp. It all worked well enough but what I miss most from those days is the darkness. Everyone didn't have great big feck off yard lights that they left on all night like they do now. Light pollution really pisses me off .
  7. If it's late 60's that's 40 years plus. This sounds like an interesting line. Have you any pics of them? Did they breed the size down at all?
  8. There's been a lot of discussion on these subjects already. If any of you really care about it then only buy pups from two working parents and all your problems are solved.
  9. Be very careful using insulating tape to wrap a leg. If you put it on with any stretch at all then each turn round the leg makes it tighter and tighter. The result is circulation cut off and a swollen foot. It's fine to fix bandages in place but make sure you don't stretch it as you put it on.
  10. I like little (size zero) mepps or size zero Vibrax Blue Fox spinners for both salmon and trout. I've had salmon of 10.3lbs and 9.6lbs this year on size zero spinners and also had a few smaller ones. Only had one decent seatrout this year but many good brownies, also on zeros or ones. I cast them upstream and spin back down, fast enough to make the blade turn.
  11. I do a fair bit of spearing, in the summer mostly, when hunting with lurchers is out of season. 1) Spearing with scuba is not against the law, either in UK or in Ireland but is considered unsporting so don't do it. 2) Have some commonsense about carrying a gun over a crowded beach. The gun may not be illegal but people using the beach may feel threatened or unsafe, same as if you carried a 12 bore across a beach. 3) There are some areas in the UK which are declared nursery areas for bass and you're not allowed to spear there. 4) Ireland has a 2 fish bag limit for bass and a closed season
  12. I've read the Jack Ivester Lloyd one years ago. I found it a great read as I like his writing style and if I remember rightly it contains some good info on keeping and working a small beagle pack too. I now own an American book called "This Is The Beagle" byGeorge D. Whitney. It gives details of raising and training beagles for American style beagle trials but it's written in a much drier, more serious style and isn't a lot of fun to read.
  13. u should speak to fred the toad or frog !! he seems to no it all ! dont call me the master for nothing I heard Hedz was a way better lamper than you mate!!! .....
  14. Where do you buy Padnasol Birddog??? I've looked on the web a few times and never found any for sale. I think there's more than one colour too, which colour for split or cracked pads?
  15. Hi Jigsaw, when you're taking photos of a dog close up like that it's best to kneel and get the camera at the dog's shoulder level, then move back until the all the dog is in the picture. I'm surprised no ones done a "sticky" on how to take doggy pictures. There're some good photographers on here who could do a good job of it. I like your pup. I'm sure he'll cover his ribs in time. In my opinion a lot of saluki saturated hounds have a boney look to them.
  16. That's illegal Millet. Rats n' rabbits only!!
  17. Just to add I mean few or none could do it at the beginning of a run. I know they can do it once the hound is tiring. I'm sure greyhounds top speed must have been accurately measured. Can the average hound reach 45 mph? I don't know myself but I bet someone on here does.
  18. I wouldn't trust any so called facts from this site or any other that doesn't offer any proof of their statements. They probably just quote someone who is quoting someone else who is............who is making a romantic guess. Next they will be telling you that peregrine falcons stoop at 200 miles an hour. I've seen a lot of hares coursed and in my opinion very few could straightline an average fit greyhound. I'm sure a lot will disagree with me but that's what I believe.
  19. Fairplay to you George, you're getting pretty good with the camera. I enjoy your vids when I see them before you take them back off again.
  20. i agree with this jumping into a field on the lamp creates two problems the first how do u now whats in that field presently and it is very difficult to lamp the other field from the point u started the dog unless youre on the move with the lamp which ive never seen done fair enough walking on to a clapper but not while the course is on going Personally I do a fair bit of running about with the lamp, to keep the rabbit lit up when it runs through dips in the field or behind rises in the ground. do you jump gates to ? No but I fall off them a lot.

  22. Sounds like it could have made a reasonable dog in the right hands. Your pal would have been better suited with a dog with natural killing instinct. Maybe a bull cross from a good working strain or indeed anything bred from parents proven in that work.
  23. Dark brindle bitch is Hancock bred.Reasonable lamper and ferreter.
