I quite like "doggy" bitches ie. bitches with some doglike characteristics. Pushyness and dominance. I used to prefer bitches altogether but having had a couple of dogs that worked well over the years, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference.
Coming in season can be a pain alright but so can pissing on everything. I had a dog that always tried to piss on kids jumpers (for goalposts) and my daughter has a whippet that loves to piss into the bottom tier of my ferret cages.
Good idea. I got a lurcher calendar at Christmas and to be honest the pics are a bit disappointing. Lurchers can one of the most beautiful dogs so with the right choice of animal and good photography................
Your wifes photos are stunning Sandymere. Does she do it professionally?
That's not quite right. I've kept and occasionally bred collie greys for almost 40 years and what I've found is that some will take fox and some won't. Even when I've bred a litter from two very keen fox killers some of the offspring will and some won't.
why bother with a dog?

Deer hunting by catching a wild feral (pest) deer with just my hands - no guns, traps, tools or weapons - the true test of man vs ...
There is no season for rabbits ... They are classed as vermin and can be hunted all year round .....
I think what the lad is after is what are the LAWS for taking game with a dog in Ireland ... What can you and can't you legally hunt ??? ............
i no there is no season for rabbits are u saying your a summer hunter tink u let that 1 out
He's a professional pest controller. Rabbit catching for wages, all year round.
Brindle collars are faster, FACT!!
I knew it ! My dog has a tartan collar - no wonder he doesn't catch anything.
Yeah but he's very agile, so still ok for the mice!
True - he smashes mice. Sometimes 2 or 3 a night
But will he do that night after night without jacking?
Feck me, some serious advice here and seemingly based on experience. Personally I'd err on the side of caution. You can always take it off but you can't change your mind and put it back on.
Rubbish !!
On rabbit, hare and fox I'd agree with you but for bigger quarry too......... I'd say a big dog can stop small quarry easier than a medium sized dog could stop bigger stuff.
Because if you buy a healthy looking pup at a show and it turns out to be carrying parvo which hasn't shown yet then vaccinating will probably be the death of it.
I've just been looking at those on youtube. They certainly seem to have herding instinct, however all the vids I found showed them herding "tame" sheep. ie sheep which naturally gathered round a human. It would be interesting to see what they'd do with a wild mountain ewe which doesn't want to be gathered.
I'm not knocking them by the way, they looked OK to my inexperienced eye.
True but if there're a lot I can't see a problem with shooting one for the pot. What I hate is when shooters wipe out rabbits, hares or anything else for that matter.
