“Should make good rabbit dogs”
Maximus Ferret replied to SheepChaser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'll probably get my head bitten off here but here goes.? I've never owned a fen dog and haven't run the fens for over 30 years and never went in for competitions when I did but as the running is single handed, success involves a single handed catch. Seems to me that a hare caught in cover is just as caught as a hare which is herded off the cover first so being good at catching in cover is just as much a skill as catching in the open. Might not look as good but the hare is still caught and they don't usually take to cover anyway until they're feeling the pressure. Feel free to tell me why -
Ferrets aren't getting any cheaper either! https://www.donedeal.ie/animals?sort=publishdate desc&words=ferrets

Which bit do you doubt Juckler? Is it the winning of thousands? -

I'd have liked one from that litter myself. She looks perfect for floating over the heather. What height ATS has she made? -
Think your on the mark at 3 to 6 months Craigo. I think seaweed powder used sparingly is a good supplement at any age. Contains lots of trace elements and seems to make the coat shine like glass. I found the old SA37 good too but wouldn't feed any supplement as a matter of course. Personally I only use that kind of thing at times of stress or when getting them fit. Most "complete" foods contain added vitamins already and too much can be as bad as not enough.

I love to see a good sporting run but I have to say that if I wanted a hare for the table I wouldn't mind if a half cross picked it from the seat or pushed it into a gate net.? In good hare country I've seen a dog put 3 at once into a net in a place where there wasn't even hedges at the sides of the gateway. Heart stopping stuff. -
Just in passing, I've fed dogs all ways over the years and noticed that dogs fed on meat and bone will eat rough grass then "bile out" a lot more.

Did anything hatch? -
And mine to an extent but I have to say I thought the same of people challenging best of 3, best of 5 etc. Competitions in killing game never appealed to me and still don't but we can't all be the same. I seem to remember he did actually run quite a few people and was only beaten once. I could be wrong? Can't remember where I read that. Possibly one of Andy's posts.

Them oven chips are feckin horrible. A very poor chip substitute. I pity you having to eat them things Blacky. Tell her you're just stylishly bow fronted, that should do it.?

Hows the young bitch bred Jack? -
I remember the challenge coming out and am sure it was around early 80's. I can remember at the time, discussing with other dog men whether the numbers were real or not. Living in Lincolnshire at the time those numbers of rabbits weren't available locally but you live and learn eh? I was more into daytime hares at that time myself. The original thread is still here https://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/247987-minshaw/ but with a lot of the photos gone it isn't quite the same I think. Still worth a read though.

Kentucky fried rabbit?

I don't only hunt rabbits and my blitz 240 adjustable beam with the variable power switch is adaptable to whatever I'm doing at the time. With a lithium battery it's perfect for what I do but since you said that the lamp you are selling is better..... well I was naturally curious to know in what way it's better. To me it doesn't sound as adaptable as the blitz variable power with it's adjustable width of beam and variable strength. Just my opinion though after using blitz for years.
-
A wider spread is definately safer for the dog doing the running and with the blitz you can adjust the beam to exactly what you need. What's the guarantee like on this one Dave? Also, how does it compare to the blitz for visibility? I have trouble spotting rabbits in the very white beams of most LED's and the figures quoted on beam colour mean nothing to me without seeing the beam in action. It's all very well seeing the beam at 1000 km but can you pick out a rabbit at the same distance as with a blitz?

I used to charge 25 euro if I remember right. It was a while ago that I bred last and that was the going rate. I stopped keeping and breeding as I wasn't ferreting much but since I've a young pup on (8 months) I'd like to get one so he knows they are not fair game. Did you come across many from working lines?
-
Both but I was thinking of the breeding season more than anything. Stags of sika and red are out of season here after end of february here. Edited to say stags out of season here end of December and hinds end of February.

5 days at the end of april??? Anyone night shooting deer at the end of april deserves to be caught but with all that tackle they saw no-one and wasted all that time and money.
