  1. I must've asked 5 farmers and now have permission for 3 farms totaling over 500 acres. One farm I can't take the dogs but I can use my guns at any time day or night, another farm I can use whatever I like but I have to give advanced notice and the third I can only use my 12 bore over the wheat stubble but again that's any time. My motto is "If you don't ask, you don't get!" so the answer is to dress fairly smartly and go knock on some doors. The worst they can do is say no. Generally most farmers "Have someone who shoots" but they haven't been up for ages. Say that you don't want to tread o
  2. Good luck and hope she recovers quickly. As others have said its important that she takes it easy for a couple of months atleast. These things have a habit of rearing their heads again further down the line if they're not rested properly first time round. Don't be tempted to think "it'll be alright, she's a tough old thing". If she isn't allowed to recover properly first time it can cause serious issues in later life.
  3. Gonna see if I can try a couple of options... 1) Take a terrier to flush the rabbits to her and see if she's any better. 2) Take a lurcher and see if she can flush the rabbits to it. I'll then be in a better position to decide which way to go with her or maybe just give up LOL!
  4. Thanks for that. I think I'll email my local firearms dept and get an answer in writing. My rabbiting day is wednesday but my permission is about 20 miles out. PM me your details and I'll run it by the land owner. Could do with a few tips as the rabbits seem to be getting the better of me at the moment.
  5. Yes but surely at any point I could be on my way to or from one of my permissions... It'd be hard to prove otherwise. I have written permission for each site saying that I can use a shotgun, a rifle or an air rifle. Its not like I'll be keeping it in the cab tucked down the back of the seat, it'll be in a slip, in a rack in the locked rear of my van. I guess you're right though, I'll treat it the same as if it were a shotgun or a rifle and only take it in the vehicle when I'm definitely going to one of my permissions. There's a lot riding on it and it'd be madness to risk my shotgun a
  6. I have various permissions for rabbiting and pigeon shooting dotted around the North Yorkshire area. Sometimes I find myself with a little spare time and the opportunity to call in on my way home but I don't carry my air rifle in the van with me. Would I be allowed to carry it in my van from when I leave the house in a morning til when I return at night or will I have to go home and collect it for a rabbiting trip thus missing out on being able to just drop in on the way somewhere? I don't want to break the law. I'm aware of the laws for firearms and shotguns as I'm in the middle of ap
  7. She's easily fast enough, just seems to be looking at me instead of at the rabbits she's meant to be chasing
  8. She prefers to chase, it seems that when I want her to go off on her own and bush she sticks by my side and when I want her to stay close she's off somewhere LOL! I think she'd benefit from a terrier flushing rabbits to her, pretty sure she'll cotton on then. Just need to persuade the missus that a terrier is a good idea.
  9. Well we went out yesterday to one of my permissions that is totally over-run with rabbits but caught nothing! She seems to be a little slow off the mark. When she finally sets off after a rabbit she gains on it pretty quickly, she's agile enough to match its twists and turns but by the time she's anywhere near close enough to strike they're disappearing down their holes. How do I get her to be quicker off the mark? Its so frustrating, we could've had 20 rabbits yesterday if she'd cottoned on a bit quicker. Should I maybe have another dog flushing them to her? Would that work better? So fru
  10. Off again tomorrow. Hopefully come back with a few rabbits for the pot. Can anyone recommend any Rabbit recipes? I'm more into curries than pies but will give anything a try once!
  11. Have you tried giving her a slap? To be honest no... I rescued her after she'd spent 10 months (solid) in a dog crate. She'd never been walked, didn't know what toys were and was made to eat, drink, shit and piss in the same space only being cleaned out when her owner couldn't stand the smell any more. Because of this I'm probably a bit soft with her so if there's another way then I'll try that first. Don't get me wrong, a short sharp shock comes in handy when training a dog but I'll try every other way before I try that with her. If she turns out not to be a good worker that's fine as I
  12. Well I took her out on wednesday afternoon and she was right on the money! Easily fast, agile and game enough for a bit of rabbiting
  13. cheers mate any pics off your bitch? She's never stood still long enough for me to take a picture. Will see if I can get one in next few days
  14. Looks a lot like my Collie cross except she's got a longer coat... Same build, same head, similar colouring... I thought she was a collie/lab but having seen this I's say she's more likely collie/bull/whippet. She's a very fast, loyal and intelligent dog. Great guard dog and hopefully a good rabbiter. Quite aggro though, and very bouncy and energetic
  15. I think youre right. My Old English Sheepdog would love to chase rabbitsbut sadly he's too slow and about as agile as a cruise ship LOL! Going to take the collie and a patterdale/russell out for their first rabbiting tonight(if all goes to plan)so will let you know how they get on.
  16. Will try and find someone with ferrets and ask if I can pop along next time they're out.
  17. She's very obedient in every way except she won't sit still. She jumps up sometimes and she's very excitable. I've tried all sorts but can't seem to calm her down. Any ideas?
  18. Well I've found someone who runs lurchers and I'm going to take her along for a go on wednesday. Will let you know how she does. Is there anything I can do with her at home to prepare her or should I just take her as is? Is it worth witholding her food tuesday night so she's a little more eager? Someone suggested I try it but I'm not too keen to be honest... Any views on this?
  19. On the opposite end of the scale I was out decoying with my mate the other day. We were sharing a gun so were both crouched behind the same hide when a big fat woodie landed no more than 8ft infront of us right on the edge of our decoys. Jon popped up, took aim and missed. Took aim again, released the second barrel and missed again. Don't know how he managed it but the bird hardly even flinched.
  20. Thanks for the replies. So I should just take her to a field of rabbits and let her loose? It's as easy as that? I read on a different topic that it helps to let them have one and then hold them back, is that right? I'm struggling to find anyone with an experienced dog in my area...
  21. I have a year old Collie Cross (think there's some lab and maybe a bit of lurcher in her) and my attempts to persuade the other half to let me have a terrier for ratting and bushing have fallen on deaf ears. "You're not getting another f*cking dog!" has been heard in my house on many occasions. Faced with this issue I'm wondering if its possible to bring on my year old collie to do a similar job. If so, where do I start? My mate has 2 lurchers and runs them quite regularly but she's probably not going to be fast enough to keep up with them and if she did catch a rabbit before them they'd l
  22. I have a pair of Viking 10X50 and they're great. Never had any problems and the clarity is great even over some distance. Easy to fine tune the focus and comfortable to hold and against your eyes. Mine were very expensive compared with others in the shop but the difference in quality was very clear.
  23. Have explained my situation to a local RFD and he's encouraged me to apply for both a .17HMR and a .243 straight off. I can justify these as I have a couple of large permissions with the odd deer as well as rabbits and foxes. He said the local firearms officers prefer the .17 over the .22 as there's less potential for ricochet and stray bullets. All I need to do now is get saving LOL!
  24. I'm not in Scotland or Northern Ireland, does that matter?
