  1. Mt dad used to go out with a neighbouring farmer back in the late 50s. The farmer had a CAR BATTERY strapped to his back, and a converted headlight as a lamp!! No pics to prove it, but its true: one night the battery leaked and burned right through his clothes and skin: me dad said you could just see his back bone. But he wouldn't go to hospital, and it healed ok, though for weeks afterwards every time we saw him he was rubbing his back up and down against a gatepost or whatever, saying it itched like hell. That's how I know the story, cos I saw him doing it, and asked my dad why. They us
  2. Just look at the legs on her! And she's got so much growing to do still: beautiful pup: I bet your'e chuffed with her.
  3. I've got hunting horn as my ringtone: love it, and people wonder why I take so long to answer the phone LOL. PM me if you are interested and give me your number and I'll try and send it to you.
  4. Neat looking dogs, the both of them, though I do love the look of Bramble: what way is she bred?
  5. Is it a front leg or a hind leg? Check the knee joint (stifle) if its a hind leg, and the wrist if its a front leg.Can you feel if there is any heat in the leg anywhere: compare it to the other leg! It is definitely worth getting to a greyhound vet if its not getting any better after a fortnight on the lead. Pups can sometimes crack bones, without displacing them, which would only show up under x-ray, and you keep the dog on a lead for a week then think its OK, and the minute they run again it hurts, but more to the point it sets the healing back to square one.

It took me a hell of a lot longer just to get the pics in focus: those are brilliant, especially the one of the terrier profile: has it been edited at all, or is that straight from the camera? If it is, it's brilliant.
  7. Great thread: I just love to watch hares going about their business: used to love running them even more! Juckler: they like higher ground as it is drier: hares don't like the wet if they can help it. On the fens we always used to find them on ground that was even an inch or two higher than the rest: I guess it helps them look out for predators as well. On the farm near us they always used to disappear to the lower ground in Winter as the farm is on a hill, and the ground got very cold in Winter. Nowadays, witht he milder Winters, they are there all year round. Nothing to find half a d
  8. There's an unusually marked pup in the first pic: with a white mark on its right flank, but I couldn't see it in the later pics: is it still there? Just curious as to whether it had lightened up in colour. How many did she have in total?
  9. Did you see, I think they actually dug the hare out of a hole and slipped the dogs on it! Let's face it, there's only one way an animal could survive in that heat during the day, and that's underground. The desert hares are very small. I still think its like watching paint dry: nothing against Salukis: they are a superb piece of equipment for the job. Not my cup of tea though: a war of attrition.
  10. I love Deerhound crosses: loyal, sensible, tough as old boots (once they have grown up), terrific hunters, BUT, their size does put them at a disadvantage if your'e after an out and out rabbit dog. My old first cross was great on rabbits for her size, but in all honesty, a much smaller dog does the business on small prey far better: after all, it doesn't have to reach down so far as a big dog, and they can turn far quicker and tighter too. I'd still love another one though: great temperaments for the most part, and most are very game.
  11. Best of luck with the trap: you'll only have one chance at it, so make sure there's no hidden snags: test it fully first and practice a bit! Its worked for us in the past!
  12. Incredibly sharp pics. I'm still coming to terms, not that I will ever be an expert (not got the patience!) with my 350D. What mode did you have it on? I reckon smooth coated dogs come out really well on photos, my hairy ones always look blurred! And its not just me with camera shake LOL. Eited to add: just realised you put which mode you were on. But its still not that easy to get them as sharp as you have done. (Iknow that from frustrating experience!)
  13. Very interesting: so what went over Kim to produce Balla? did Kim catch hares in her own right? Was she fast, or just very strong with stamina? Love to hear more about them. Is your big red dog you have now related to Kim?
  14. Duckwing, those birds are sensational: are the white ones goldie mules? But what are they muled with? Dimorphic canaries? (I'm no expert, only keep a few mongrel canaries, but these hybrids reallly fascinate me) And there is the one on its own that almost looks like a white and speckled robin! Is it?
  15. I aint eating no f cking fox or mole @ heart of wales! LMAO! But you would if there was really nowt else to eat though!
  16. You can get a Parvo jab for pups of 6 weeks old, though Procyon (the make of jab) now do a 1st puppy vaccination that you can give at 6, or is it 5 weeks old. The thing to remember is that until 8 weeks old a puppy should have maternal immunity, but if the dam has never been jabbed then she won't have any immunity to pass on to the pups, unless she has had Parvo and survived, thugh I'm not 100% sure if this gives a lifetime immunity to the bitch. If you buy in a pup get it as young as possible and get it jabbed with either a straight Parvo jab or the first Procyon jab at 6 weeks, then follo
  17. I agree with Molly and DS: they shouldn't be too fat. Some pups, especially terriers, can be just so greedy that they have no 'cut off' switch to tell them they are full. They will literally eat until they are groaning and cannot move. Definitely NOT healthy. IMO both terrier and lurcher pups (except Salukis who should always look thinner!) should have a good elastic covering of excess skin and flesh (to allow for growing into LOL), but they shouldn't look like Labrador pups, and you should be able to feel their bones beneath that layer. It is absolutely true about the number of fat cel
  18. Well this has been really interesting, and I DO have a life! We stopped buying marge abut a year ago, just went off the brilliant yellow colour and the slimy taste of it, AND we were using Flora, not just any old margarine! Now we buy Lurpak spreadable, and I've noticed that if you cook with it you get a lot less spitting and spluttering than y0u do if you cook with Flora, which after all has got to be mostly water by the amount of spitting that comes out of the pan as the water gets evaporated. Please will someone do some research on Lurpak spreadable and find out if it it is as health
  19. I'm intrigued: and shocked! Why aren't you allowed to keep ferrets?
  20. Lovely tale: I wish I could drag myself out of the pit at that time in the morning: I just know there's a lot of game about just then.
  21. bet your chuffed with young Blue. Great stuff.
  22. Very attractive dog, do you know the breeding, or is it like mine: lurcher to lurcher for donksy's years?
  23. For a dog weighing about 22 to 25 kilos you would need 250mg of Amoxicillin twice a day: 500 mg twice a day would be too much even for your dog. If you have capsules pull them apart, get some hard butter or marg, pour half the contents into one half of the capsule, the other half into the other, bung the open ends up with fat, then give half twice a day for a minumum of 5 days. Hope this helps.
  24. very impressive: she looks very steady for her age: but then again, its the trainer that maketh the dog, eh!
