  1. Was it the Arsepca who seized the dogs and then put them in someone else's kennels? If so surely they (the arsepca) are then responsible for those dogs? Or not? the case of the Bull type terrier local to me that mangled a little boy's face after it had been homed by Wood Green Animal Shelter: the director of this place has just (in the local paper) refuted all responsibilty for the dog attacking as they said the dog was fine with kids when it left their shelter, although technically they still own the dog and could have taken it back at any time if there were problems. So it looks like t
  2. Looks like it might be avery bad lick granuloma, though to be honest I have'nt seen one in that place on the dog before: usually on the front of fore legs and feet: here's what I googled..... Quote: Lick granulomas often start as a tiny sore spot on the skin which gets worse as your dog continues to lick it. They tend to look like hairless, thick sores that have scarred over and have ulcerated and oozing centers. And, as most anyone who has had a dog with a lick granuloma knows, applying sprays and ointments simply doesn't seem to help. If you suspect that your dog may have a lick granuloma,

    Hawk Poem

    That's beautiful.
  5. How old are they and are they male or female: they shouldn't really lose weight as such, but could they be losing their puppy fat look? Get some pics up of them if you can.
  6. rabbit slayer: I know this might ound obvious, but are they getting less work now, in the warmer weather? And if they are kenneled outside then they won't need to eat so much as they did in the winter as they're not burning energy keeping warm in the kennel. Though when you say they are'nt looking so good, what do you mean exactly?
  7. I bought a really pale silver kit who at nearly 3 years old is now a very pale looking polecat: his silver coloured offspring also darken as they mature.
  8. ferretlove: whereabouts are you? If its not a million miles away from me it'd be worth my while making a trip. I'm in Cambs.
  9. Looking good there: mine's changed colour a lot now she's getting her top coat on her back. Looks like they'll all be good uns.
  10. Vasectomies at any vets on the Ferret Welfare list came to about the same: around the £70 mark. Cheapest was in Cambridge: that surprised me: but its still a lot of dosh at £65, or am I just behind the times? One vet on the list said he wouldn't do vasectomies: he preferred to castrate the hobs and jill jab the females: I WONDER WHY!! ££££
  11. I have finally found a vet in Anglia who does vasectomies on ferrets.and they quoted me £74! At that price I'll have to think again: has anyone found a vet who will do it cheaper, and within 100 mile radius of Cambridge?

    HORSE MEAT

Used to get it from a knacker's yard for the dogs, but they used to chuck in the fillets for us as long as it hadn't been medicated or whatever first. Bloody delicious: I always used to say that once you'd had horse steak then beef would pale into a dim memory: far far tastier and tenderer (even old ones) than beef.
  13. I think skycat should have a "dear deidre" section his advice on the whole is bloody A1 .xx Seems like it doesn't it LOL!! I look at it this way: I had few people and a few books to help me when I started in dogs, now after a lifetime (longer than I care to say )in dogs I'm still learning something new every day, but if I can't share what I've learned over the years then I'd be a sorry SOB. Never say I know it all, far from it: I can still remember how frustrating it was not to understand why a dog did or didn't do something: understanding canines has come a long way since I was a
  14. If you wait until the pup is 8 months old you will have one hell of a job getting it to do anything you want! It would be a bit like not sending a kid to school until it is 14 years old! Start off right away calling the pup by its name, making a big fuss of it whenever it comes to you. Play with it as much as possible: let it know that biting your hand is not allowed: even in play; give a nasty growl and say 'No' if it bites and take your hand away and ignore the pup for a while. Getting a pup to sit at this age is dead easy: every time you feed it hold the bowl above its head and s

    HANGHOVER

Once drank nearly a bottle of whisky (a friend asked me to look after it at a show shindig: silly bloke!LOL). Was very, very ill next morning: drank a pint of fresh lemonade: fresh squeezed lemons, sugar and water: an hour later.......back to normal as though I'd never had a drink! Give it a go.
  17. For starters a 7 week old pup cannot hold its piss: its like a baby: when its gotta go it goes: shaking it by the scruff or telling it off in any way at this stage will do harm to the bond you and the pup should be getting: it can't understand what it has done wrong. some pups naturally get the hang of the housetraining thing more or less straight away, others take longer, but I would NEVER expect a pup to be 100% clean in the house until it is at least 5 months old, and then the teething process often sets them back again. If you are rearing your pup indoors get a crate: big enough for a
  18. Yes, Its a funny thing this crating business: I use to (many years ago) when I first heard of them, think it was cruel to put a puppy in a cage: but it's just our perception of the 'cage', and it doesn't seem right to 'cage' a dog when most folks think of it like that. Substitute the words 'nest' or 'den' and there's no problem, and that's exactly what a crate is to a dog: somewhere safe and snug. Once they've got used to the fact that they can't rampage all over your house getting their own way all the time! My adult dogs queue up to get in the crate in my sitting room as soon as a pup co
  19. That's really weird: I've been thinking of that song all morning, just didn't get around to playing it!
  20. Superb shots of the birds: the 2nd to last: is that a Gyr/Saker? It's beautiful whatever it is.
  21. Interesting question: IMO a good dog becomes a great dog when it consistently performs at a level that leaves you saying to yourself:"How the hell did it do that?!" Making those 'impossible' catches that other dogs would have missed, finding where other dogs have gone by or given up, and never chucking in the towel when the chips (of whatever sort) are down. So you can apply this list of things to any sort of dog, lurcher, terrier or whatever working dog. A great dog is IMO the one you compare all your other dogs to, and the one you remember after it has gone to the great hunting ground in
  22. Interesting pics: is the dog in the first pic of REW's Dad one of the GSD x pups grown up? Looks a powerful dog.
  23. Agree: useful looking dogs: shame about the one you lost: all the best with the young un. Like your kennel on legs: I do the same for mine: gives them a bit more floor space and keeps them off the damp.
