Next to the fishing lakes round here there are two sunken tanks. I'm totally ignorant of how fish breed, but I wondered if they could have been used to stock growing fish at one time? Sorry for the ridiculous suggestion, but can't think of any other reason they are there, just a few metres away from one of the lakes. Anyway, countless times my terriers have got stuck in one of them after they've ploughed through the brambles surrounding the tanks and gone flying off the edge. A sensible dog that swims all the way round can find its way back up on side that's collapsed a bit, but it's scary wat

Good question, and one I've often pondered. I believe that stuff can be passed down from one generation to the next in the genes, which may have been altered by the experiences undergone in the parent. It has been proved that transgenerational trauma exists in humans, and whilst much of this may be attributed to the behaviour of the adults, there also seems to be proof that chemical imbalances exist in the DNA of those who have been traumatised. http://upliftconnect.com/intergenerational-trauma/ On the dog level, I remember, when I bred from my Deerhound/Greyhound, her daughter 'knowi

Dogs should be allowed to express their natural instincts. It's all part of their drive/release of energy. I have resigned myself to buying doggy shampoo and an outside mixer tap attached to the hot water. When I'm rich I'll invest in a doggy shower cubicle in the kennel ..., oh, and one of those super doggy drying machines.

Not sure if this has already been put on here, but hey, here it is: we all need to sign this, no matter how futile we think our efforts may be. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/164891

All animals are unique individuals, with varied temperaments. I've noticed in our mainly EU Polecat ferrets: even when if you breed from a very chilled-out and laid-back hob, he may well produce offspring that are more on the wild side, though, in the main, I've found the hobs to be a lot easier to handle than the jills. Most of the jills are very fast indeed, and can be quite reactive when being handled, whereas the hobs plod along steadily with no dramatic reaction. Is it just a male versus female thing? I'm not sure, not having studied wild polecats, but when you look at domestic dogs, fema

It won't affect the dog's running itself, but as there is no stopper to protect the back of the leg when the dog is running hard the place where it used to be can risk injury: lots of tendons and ligaments there. Just look at photos of the extreme flexion in the front leg when the paw hits the ground and the leg bends to absorb the shock of the impact. I've seen those stopper protectors in action out coursing, and the ones which do up with velcro straps are useless for a working dog, for they aren't stretchy enough to be tight enough to stop muck getting between the protector and the skin. I Just Couldnt Help Myself, I Just Had To Try It.

Moja: no I didn't, and regret it. Sparrow is now 10, and Hunni is 8. Too late, I'm afraid. Time has a habit of going faster the older you get. Where did those years go! -

I've had 5 month old pups catch myxie rabbits whilst out mooching by day, and I usually take pups ferreting by the time they are 5 months old, but I think that is quite different to running on the lamp, at night, when the pup will be less aware of the lumps and bumps in the ground, fences, obstacles etc. If my 5 month old pup was handling itself well by day, out ferreting, and showing real keenness out mooching, not afraid to dive in for a catch when a rabbit is bolted by the terriers from cover, then I might just consider taking it out on the lamp, but only if the land was as safe as can poss -

The Truth About Positive Dog Training
skycat replied to neems's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
It is also necessary to teach kids to respect animals. I remember when a friend came round with her daughter, who was about 5 years old at the time. She was a very difficult kid indeed and liked to blow in dogs' faces, which most people know dogs really hate. She did it to one of my very child-friendly lurchers, who promptly nipped her on the nose. Not hard, barely enough to break the skin, and the child's mother said 'serves her right'. There is no way I would have had that dog put down for teaching that child a lesson, and it worked, for she never did it again. So, whilst I appreciate that -

Thanks everyone who has ordered books. All books paid for have now been sent. Still got a few left.

Trouble is, there just isn't enough demand. The lurcher market is tiny, comparatively speaking, if doing a book for the working lurcher, as opposed to the pet lurcher. And most of those who have rescue or pet lurchers are not at all interested in training their dogs for work in the field, as hunting dogs ... quite the opposite ... they would rather stop their dogs catching things. Maybe, if I get a bit of money together, I could self-publish on demand, which does cost quite a bit, but done digitally, once the book is set up, each book ordered costs relatively little to print. It is the se
