Questions I Asked Countryside Alliance Today.
skycat replied to dog man's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks for mentioning that squeamish: Deb Blount put the lurcher submission together. I think it was very well written and comprehensive, but did they listen? Did they hell! I also heard that the vote to ban hunting was held before the Burns report was ever read or looked into. Can anyone verify this? -

Do you have any footage of the lurcher catching muskrat? Be nice to see her in action. -

This, then, is the crux of the matter: that shooters can and do go out and shoot anything they want to, and the fact that those animals do not always die quickly and cleanly is disregarded entirely. They have taken our hunting away from us on the grounds that killing with dogs is inhumane. Yet it comes down to money again, and a very well organised, highly-lucrative industry which is well represented in all the corridors of power. Strange, when you consider that the running dog was once the preserve of the landed and titled. Those same landed and titled who have now banned hunting with dogs. -

OK, so there are more than a few who have the ability to string words together. The next step would be to have a session, where everyone who is willing to actually do something about this situation, gets together and puts forward a plan of action. Personally, I think the idea of buying a licence to hunt certain species, with a number they are allowed to kill, is a good one. It might sound draconian to us who formerly went out and killed what we liked with no one to tell us how many or how. But, if there was a strict law in writing which stated you were allowed to hunt hare with one dog, for th -

I feel that I'm in the fortunate, or possibly unfortunate, position of being able to see both sides of the argument concerning how AWL is failing to reach and motivate lurcher owners and why so many are unwilling to participate in an organised lurcher association. Trying to change the mindset of so many working lurchermen (I use the gender specific term deliberately) would be a close to impossible task, in view of the historic abuse and ignorance on both sides. And before anyone suggests that I am hardly in a position to mention either, I do understand perfectly why a man with a dog, who comes -
Helped me too when I'd 'lost' some scans: swallowed up in the mystery that is the computer. A few moments and he found them: what's more this guy wants nothing in return. A true human being.

One of mine broke the top off her lower canine a few years ago. You can see the nerve in the centre. Took her straight to the vet, who said leave it unless it seems to be causing problems, as extracting a canine tooth is a major job as the root is so long and deep into the jaw bone. 3 or 4 years on it has never bothered her at all and shows no signs of decay/going discoloured or rotten. There is just a small, dark shadow in the centre of the broken tooth, and she chews bones fine, eats as normal and shows no signs of pain if I press it. I keep an eye on it nonetheless.

Fox Bite On Dog ...any Suggestions...

Savlon is good too. It's just to provide a barrier against infection and keep the flesh from drying out. -
Fox Bite On Dog ...any Suggestions...
skycat replied to nans pat's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Personally I wouldn't put wound powder on raw flesh. Healing flesh needs to stay moist to heal: bit like earth needs to be damp to grow stuff. In this dog's case she is trying to grow new skin to cover the wound. Good slather of honey or any topical antiseptic ointment to keep it moist and keep out bacteria. -

So pleased for you. She had the best teacher didn't she. Look forward to many more from her.

Great footage there. Do the mink ever get bitten in their tussles with musk rats? -
Get in touch with Lurcherlink. They are the best rescue for lurchers there is. http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/index.php

Trying to train/bond with a dog that has never learned to see people as the providers of all good things: fun, food, company, protection, safety etc, can be a very soul-destroying business, and it can take literally years to achieve even the smallest of progress. If the dog hasn't had that fun bonding experience as a young puppy, it may never connect with you fully. Why should it? Plus, the brain of a puppy is much more sponge like and open to new lessons than the brain of one that has never made all the neural connections. There is a finite window of time in which to achieve this. By 8 months

I tried to watch this, but got so angry I couldn't watch it all. As for the question of cruelty: how can any sane person possibly compare correct hunting practices with the cruelty involved in deliberately breeding dogs who suffer agony because their skulls are too small for their brains?

You have done the right thing. So very sorry to read this. Nell had the very best life with you that any dog could. All we can do, as real dog men and women, is to know the time comes to say goodbye, and you can be proud that you have done the best for her that you could have. Later, when the pain is not so raw, you will look back on your years together and remember the fantastic times you had together. RIP Nell.

For Sale Unique Carved Lurcher Antler Opinel No 12
skycat replied to GruffaloGriff's topic in Miscellaneous
Stunning workmanship. It's a funny old world: people will happily pay £200 for a special night out, yet crib at paying a master craftsman for the hours he has spent creating a unique and beautiful ... and useful ... item. -
The more different things you do with a dog, the more intelligent and able it will be. Learning new skills, new disciplines, broadens the mind. And if you are new to dogs it wouldn't hurt to take the pup to sensible training classes, yes, even those for pet dogs. Socialisation is key, and if the person who takes the classes is anything of an instructor they will be teaching you to teach your pup. Obedience competitions are very under subscribed amongst the lurcher fraternity. Give it a go, when the pup is old enough, but above all have fun with the pup, and get it out and about as much as you

It's her front left and it looks like her 2 on the right of the paw look broke but her nail on the left of the paw is swollen and looks abit loose so took her to the vets today and he cant find any pain anywhere so doesn't know what it is so he's give me anti inflammatory so got to give that to her for a week then see how she is If the bones aren't broken it sounds as though ligaments have been stretched or ruptured. IMO this is as bad, if not worse, than a fracture or break, as without ligaments in the right place the toe just flops about. Ligaments take months to heal as well. You are b

Having their first season is a stage in the development of the bitch. But it won't necessarily alter her attitude a lot. If she has a certain temperament, mind set, that is her. Just because the dam may have been a first class working bitch doesn't always mean that those traits will be passed on to her offspring. It's not just the parents you need to look at when breeding lurchers, but the grand parents and even further back. Genes are funny things, and you could, for example, throw back to a dumb or less able dog way back in the line. Unless you have created your own line from scratch, paying

Fox Bite On Dog ...any Suggestions...
skycat replied to nans pat's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
That looks like a bad bacterial infection. Sometimes even the smallest of wounds can lead to cellulitis, which affects the skin and subcutaneous tissue. I got it once after being stung by a wasp. Whole leg went purple: mega strong long course of antibiotics did the job, but I've seen photos of people with infections very like your dog. I would get a second opinion from a different vet if it were my dog. It could be that the whole area needs to be debrided: meaning that the rotten tissue is cut away and the wound left open to heal slowly, but it's a nasty scenario and could take months to heal. -
Had one lurcher bitch not come in season until she was nearly 4. After that she had yearly seasons. Nothing wrong with her, and had 2 litters out of her.

Galastop is a diuretic, which means it makes the dog pee a lot, and takes fluid from the body unnaturally. It may work a treat, but I don't personally think this can be a good thing. Some bitches are very prone to having phantom pregnancies, and if they affect the bitch for months after she's had a season it may be better to consider getting her spayed if you do not intend breeding from her. There may be some evidence to suggest that frequent phantoms accompanied by heavy milk production may lead to mammary cancer. This is not proven, but it happened in two bitches I had and both milked up bad
