  1. But why did they do it? It was posted on 30th October this year, but refers to a meeting, quote: to be held on 14th October. What was the reasoning behind posting? Me no comprendo.
  2. This is weird: just saw this post on Lurcherlink forum, stating that there will be a new Lurcher Association of Great Britain and Ireland. Am I in a time warp? Or have I missed something? Here's a link to that post: anyone else know anything? http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/viewtopic.php?t=101294

    New layout

Couldn't be bothered to read all the pages so this may have been said already: I don't like the white background. The green background was so: eco, classy, hunter-friendly, easy on the eye. If there's a vote I vote to change it back. As for having to click on a love heart if I want to say I like a post: . Edited to add: oops, there are other options there. Quite OK really. But I still don't like the white background. Sorry Ian, I know you do a fantastic amount of work to keep this thing running. Actually, I think I better go back and read all this topic just in case I'm a fool and

    Flying Munty

When they come out at your feet, blur past and into the next bramble and your brain's trying to play catch up and decide whether it was a big rabbit, a brown fox or something else but your'e not sure what ... crazy speed around cover for such a small animal. Love them ... in bits. Quicker camera reaction than I'd ever be capable of, for sure.
  5. Kissing fish is just plain stupid: was he a princess just hoping her prince was disguised?
  6. Brilliant kit. Can feel a bit 'cardboardy'. Material quite stiff, but comfortable nonetheless and not heavy at all. But it really does deliver on the windproof/waterproof front, and is certainly as 'breathable' as any other comparable gear. Not had any cause to use back up service so can't comment on that, but definitely the toughest material bar none: no snags after pushing through brambles even after years and years of use. Certainly lasts very well.
  7. Mouthy pups are often highly driven. They need to grab on to something when they get all pent up inside. Keeping dog on tight lead increases their tension: they pull, you pull. They grab, you are doing the same. Also, by holding the pup on a tight, short lead, you are giving her more to react to. Are you walking fast enough? Slow walking is a nightmare for any young, active dog that wants to run. Trotting, fast, is a good speed for a dog. Failing that: give her something to hold. Favourite toy: tug toy? Direct her attention and energy on to something she is allowed to bite and hold.
  8. When you say she is sprinting daily do you mean after a lure? If she's running about on her own then she'll be twisting and turning as well. After six months the bone will be well healed and if she were my dog I'd be out working her by now. Not had a broken radius, but most dogs I've had that have broken bones in legs or toes have been back working after 4 months.

    Found This

All depends which part of the tripe it is from. The inside of a cow's stomach varies quite a bit. I get mine whole so see the variation all the time.
  10. I have used a lure with these types with great results. Saluki types are very chase focused. Use a lure in the same way a falconer calls in his bird, but pull a bit of rabbit skin along the ground instead of twirling it in the air. This works in two ways: firstly, that the dog is attracted to the bit of fur which it tries, and is allowed to, grab, once it has reached you. Secondly, by being part of the game, you, as the instigator, become more interesting to the dog. Little game of tug at the end when the dog is close to you. Have a second lure ready to divert dog off the first if it won't let
  11. No vegetables should be cooked in water: most of the nutrients are leached out in the process. It is much better for taste as well as nutritionally to steam them. That said, our modern veg and fruit are so much less nutritious than they were a hundred years ago you'd probably be just as well boiling the little life out of them and dosing up on vitamin pills.
  12. Teaching the dog to actually follow the beam is the most important thing. If you just light up a rabbit, which then moves, the dog is only chasing the rabbit without necessarily understanding that it must only run when the beam is on. Teaching the dog to obey the lamp is best trained somewhere where there is no game at all, and using a dummy, then a dead rabbit. This does work, it's a matter of putting in the ground work before you ever get out after live game.
  13. Froome's win was a whole team effort. I'm no cyclist but I do watch the Tour de France and the Vuelta, purely for the awe these dedicated masochistic athletes inspire in me. What they do is incredible, but Froome couldn't have done it without his team, who pave the way, protect and surround him at nearly all times. Taking nothing away from his achievement of course. It takes a particular mindset to punish your body and mind over weeks and weeks like this.
  14. ... or broken And that's the reason there's a thick layer of straw in our court. Even with pipes everywhere the daft beggars still try and climb up the outside of the pipes sometimes, and whilst ferrets do bounce quite well, a 5 foot drop on to concrete is not recommended.
  15. I once saw one of these spiders having a crazy battle with a praying mantis that had fallen into its web. The spider won. They are big enough to tackle large grasshoppers.
  16. Never seen one in the UK before. Used to see loads of them in the south of France when I lived there. Apparently a fairly recent arrival over here.
  17. I truly sympathise with your ongoing problem. There's nothing more guaranteed to make us feel helpless than an issue that no one can diagnose. Two things spring to mind: firstly, the fact that the bitch has had the same diet for 10 years doesn't mean that the diet is appropriate. I've had lurchers apparently fine on a raw diet, then, when they get older, they reject one of the components. In two lurcher bitches I had the problem was, believe it or not, raw chicken carcases. Took them off chicken carcases and their skin problems went away. These were two unrelated bitches as well, and it happen
  18. Brindle, not merle. And the reason people say she is Saluki and Greyhound is because that is the way 99% of these dogs are bred. Greyhound for speed, Saluki for stamina, bred for hares. That's not to say there's nothing else in her but personally I don't see any Collie at all. There could be any number of different breeds in her, but she is definitely predominantly Saluki and Greyhound. Very similar to some of the dogs I've had over the years.
  19. Ha Ha. And no, I'd deleted then emptied the trash bin, but its OK because he's contacted me again, but thank you for the advice ... I did wonder where I'd been going wrong all these years
  20. I received an email from someone on here, saying I had a pm, but didn't bother to check the name. So I deleted the email, as you do, but then couldn't find the message in my message box on here: weird. Anyway, got to thinking that maybe it wasn't a pm but a normal email and that I should have replied to it by email: so ... if the person who emailed or pmed me still wants info please can they try again, and no, I'm not on strong drink or drugs: tis a mystery to be sure
  21. Could be what they call 'walking dandruff' Not always visible to the naked eye despite its description. Look here: http://www.petful.com/pet-health/cheyletiella-mites/
  22. Puppy socialisation classes that allow pups to run riot are the worst thing in the world. Most owners haven't a clue about how to read a dog's body language. Another thing: a pup of 12 weeks that has never been exposed to other dogs, different places is in no way ready for hordes of rampant pups that don't behave in the same way as a sight hound or lurcher which is usually far more sensitive than your average Lab or terrier, for example. At 12 weeks, without correct upbringing so far, the pup is entering the first fear period in its life, where new things are viewed with deep caution and fear
  23. Icing can help to take down inflammation, but if there's no swelling it is hard to know exactly what the problem is. Vets normally prescribe painkillers and rest on the assumption that time will heal. This is often the case in minor injuries of ligaments, tendons and muscles. Or it could just be bruising? Bone bruising is very painful and won't necessarily show up as a swollen joint.
  24. Be very careful when using bone radiol. It is very strong and can damage the skin if used too often. It works by irritating the skin which draws blood to the area and promotes healing. Whilst the skin on a dog's toes is very tough, it is important to follow the protocol and stop applying if irritation occurs. The manufacturers advise using once a day for 3 days, then stopping for 3 days, then repeating as necessary. It sounds as though there might be ligament damage, in which case no galloping, lead work only until the dog appears sound, then trotting and increasing exercise whilst constantl
  25. Sometimes they have something wrong with them and don't expand properly. Don't know how it managed to fly< unless its the female and the male found her.
