Hedz31 - If you had a dog in your kennel that had worked faultless for 3 or 4 seasons. Then one day you break through to it holding its quarry mid pipe and it lets hold and you have to get a second mark and dig again. Would you honestly cull it and not give it another chance? Im not sure wether that would be plain stupid or heartless. Im all for people having high standards with terriers, but... i tihnk every young terrier should be given a fair crack of the whip. and i know a few people that only give pups one or two chances. In my opinion that isnt a fair crack. And i can certainly say

As dottydoo says you can still get creosote for commercial use. not sure if you can still get little tubs of it, we get it in 50 gal drums. but to buy from a shop to do your fence you (as far as i know) you have to buy 'creotreat'

Its now sold as creotreat. Same stuff less harmful.

Old time keeper books
PatterJack replied to Plank's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
The woods belong to me by Angus Nudds is a cracking read. Its an autobiography of an old school gamekeeper. A gamekeepers notebook by Jones & Woodward is also very good. Basically what it says on the cover. Jottings from 2 different gamekeepers made into a proper book. Ive read alot of different books and these two are my favorite. -

what about this tashy cnut!

Speak for youself pal. I agree with a .22 being a better tool for flattening the rabbit population but the bit about not being a true keeper cos you have a lurcher... bollox!! Maybe down south but up on the grouse, more keepers than not have lurchers. I suspect your either a young lad just out of college or a part timer

Sounds like a canny lad. Had a litter of 8 week old cubs on his ground

anyone use bull terriers
PatterJack replied to ScottishGamekeeper's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
First, just want to say im not having a pop or owt this is a genuine question... What sort of foxing do u mean? I get confused when people start talking about 'working bull terriers' cos they cant run a fox and that certainly isnt gona fit down a hole... -
I personally think it does damage to the sport. I dont think the arguing and name calling makes us look bad. Because the anyone reading it would just think that the site is full of d!ckheads (wouldnt be far frmo the truth). I think the thing that does the damage is the blatent law breaking and pictures of smashed dogs that gets posted on here. You can put it down as 'sharing a hunt' or whatever you want but half the time when someone comes on and writes 2 or 3 lines and then posts a close up picture of a marked up terrier or a lurcher stood over a fox or hare is nothing other than bragging

Leeds, mainly Chapel-town and beaston i think the place was. The whole of bradford. West-brom Brixton Peterborough Grimsby Donny pretty much anywhere with city folk.

I personally think 6 months max then after that government find you work. If you refuse then benefits should be stopped completely. Alot of people are too fussy, saying they wouldnt do this or do that. But if their benefits were stopped then they would have no choice. On the job training, like apprenticeships, should be offered to those willing to learn new skills/trades. Fair enough there is a major shortage of full time jobs, but there is plenty of work out there if you look hard enough. The problem is alot of people are either too lazy to work or too fussy and wont do jobs that they do

it was just a bit of grabbing that got out of hand. but by the sounds of above post the young lad got what he was after

Yes you can but theyre not alot of good. Just not got enough power. Never used a .22 pistol but have used .410 pistol and think its great. But people are right about it being noisey, especially when your down a hole head first. I would also recomend strapping a little maglite or similar to the barrel. Saves having to have both hands down the pipe when the gun is being fired.

Hard dogs have their uses as much as soft dogs. Not asif you can choose how a dog turns out though is it.

Gamekeepers
PatterJack replied to Hunting Lad's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
No offence mate but county durham is full of shooting estates, get yourself out there and make some phonecalls and get yourself out and about. dont expect someone to see your topic on here and go out of there way to help you. -
Wanted Driven hare shoot day in scotland
PatterJack replied to Mesarya's topic in Fieldsport Opportunities
robo-christ what world do you live in?! Blue (white) hares are normally shot (as already stated) to get them off the fell because of the amount of ticks that they carry. They need to be really out not just one or two taken by lurchers. Brown hares are shot mainly for two reasons crop protection and to stop coursing. Not because all shooters hate dog men, because of the problem that the gypos and rogue dogmen cause by smashing gates, driving across drilled fields and generally disrespecting the farmers/land owners. Before anyone jumps up bleating about how im a typical shooter then -
I cant believe some people have said they would keep it. You can guarentee they would be the first to post on here saying they lost their wallet and some "lowlife scumbag" has nicked off with it even though it had ID in it. Like has been said its a nice feeling returning something back to someone i posted a phone i found on the train back to its owner a few years ago. Because i know if i lost my phone or wallet i would be gutted, more for the inconvenience rather than the loss of money. Also, if i ever did lose my wallet and someone returned it with the money still in it. I would witho

I heard on the radio that Tony McCoy got over 40% of the votes... how that adds up to him being robbed i dont know. and as or david beckham not being a very good footballer... this site is classic!!!

I do. On the fell the foxes are alot smarter than low ground foxes and i think anything that helps blend in the snare or cover up human presence is worth doing. I use shop bought snares and just leave them in a burn or trough for a couple of months to brown them a bit. Left them for too long once and it starts to properly rust them and therefore slow them down. I also dont kneel on the ground when setting them to prevent leaving human scent behind. (probably doesnt make any difference but i like to do it just in case. When i've strimmed trods or runs going into a stink pit i also gather u
