Like this one you mean? Which houses a ceramic inner to drink out of and a wooden base to shape the leather round. Or do you mean a tankard just made out of leather that's completely waterproof with no ceramic inner? Oz

Yes batchelor were good for buckles, back in the late 's I used to go to their shop in North London, but then they scaled down their buckle range for some reason. Maybe they have picked up again since then

History of sighthounds in the UK

Me too, I'd like to see it -
I thought I had answered this but it doesn't seem to have appeared on here so I'll repeat it, have made only one quiver, there's 2 sorts, one that is literally leather folded in half and sewn together like a gun slip or one that is blocked to shape with a wooden base for the arrow points to rest on which is more expensive as there's a lot more work involved, which style were you thinking of?

I made one donkeys years ago but can't remember much about it.I'll have a look at some pictures and get back to you. The one I made wasn't flat like a gun holster, the person wanted one that the leather was blocked to shape round a round piece of wood at the end, so it made a tube shape. Do you have any photos of something you like the look of? The guy that makes the sheaths, Gin I think it is, might be able to do one and add some tooling too as I don't do tooling.

Thanks for the compliment Gaffer, your's is good too. In about a month's time if anyone lives near me and wants to have a go at making a belt I can give them some free training in traditional leatherworking skills if they are interested? The only cost would be for the leather and fittings which I would charge at trade price, it would help anyone gain basic skills to start leatherwork themselves.

lol, yes it looks like you've slipped with that knife!

Nice work and pics, suit the dogs well don't they,

VERY nice, I've made a few plain ones for mates as well as a bolt holster for a mate who shoots, looked like a mini version of a western gun holster!
-
Please feel free to add your own work to show me, I'[ve had to redo these due to adobe flash player crashing!

Apologies are mine mate and I wasn't touting, the work I was showing apart from the staffy harness and locata are for me and no one else. If I start another thread, I really don't mind who puts what photo on it, it's good to share isn't it? Your work is nice too, I was very impressed with the tooling, it's something I've never had a go at and it looks hard to do. Shall we start again and I'll remove the pics and put them on another thread.

I have had Lurcher bitches and terrier and lab x dogs, as some of the other have said, the dog's I found on the whole are always pissing, sniffing and easily get distracted, yet the lurcher bitches are really focused on their job whether it's lamping or mooching, I prefer bitches to dogs for these reasons. The boys are stronger and are good as back up but the action has to be up close and personal before they get interested!

My Dogs New STRONGSTUFF COLLAR + SLIP
unicornleather replied to Tom2010's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
You have a breaking strain of around 5,000lbs per square inch on good quality bridle butt 5mm leather, strong enough for most ! I was adding the post about how a leather collar should last a lot longer than it had -
My Dogs New STRONGSTUFF COLLAR + SLIP
unicornleather replied to Tom2010's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
But we are not talking about leather being bitten! Polypropylene webbing used for collars and saddlery is fine, you can sling it in the washing machine time and time again, I make dog collars, harness and leads from it for everyday use but it will fray if it catches on thorns, bushes etc and eventually will break. It's a woven fibre and once the thread goes through wear and tear it goes, one of the most common repairs I have in my workshop is polypropylene webbing breaking on front straps on horse rugs and head collars, both of which get a hard time! The use of webbing on dogs is ok as it s -
My Dogs New STRONGSTUFF COLLAR + SLIP
unicornleather replied to Tom2010's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
To be honest I don't know exacltly what is in stones beeswax leather cream as I don't sell it or use it.When I did buy and conditioner in I used Fiebings leather conditioner which I can buy trade, as far as I am aware it hasn't got any nasties in it but didn't give the hide the shine I wanted so I started making my own so I have complete control over what and how much goes in it.I even make my own lard and tallow which is hard work but I believe the old ways are best. -

A properly made leather collar, slip or lead will last many years if it is cared for. People seem to make collars out of the wrong leather (usually shoulder), you need a good English 4-5 mm bridle butt to make leatherwork that needs strength. All leather will stretch to some extent, adding neatsfoot oil (not neatsfold as they have written)as someone has suggested is the worst thing you can do for veg tanned leather, AVOID USING JUST OIL OF ANY KIND (if you were to look at the fibres/cells of the hide under a microscope after oiling it you'd see a soggy yucky mess which makes the leather stre -

This girlie is a Whirrier, she had a JRT mum and a Whippet Dad, she's more whippet than anything as you can see and she's fast, very clever, excellent hunting dog.
