You've been busy! How are you getting on with "The Saddler's Blend" leather conditioner? It's hard work to use it but you should see a difference in the leather after you've used it, Oz

HAND CRAFTED LEATHER GUN SLING
unicornleather replied to psm's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
PSM, that is NOT hand stitched, it's machined, IT'S very easy to spot the difference, awful piece of shoddy work it is too, look at the wobbly stitching for starters! Handcrafted is not handstitched, handcrafted can mean someone sitting at a sewing machine to make something using.....their hands! Very ambiguous wording that is deceptive in the very least, it's been going on in the saddlery trade for years! -
HAND CRAFTED LEATHER GUN SLING
unicornleather replied to psm's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
The first one you have listed is the best leather,it's London Tan which matures down to a nice rich Chestnut colour in time, all 3 you've listed are all run through a sewing machine, machine thread will fray long before hand stitching but it's quick and convenient. The second one and the third one are made out of what we call a spilt in the trade, cheap leathergoods dressed up as expensive are also made of splits. It's basically the off cuts off the tannery or workshop floor recycled! Second one has cheap fittings and rivets Third one has chicago screws which have a tendency to come loose -
It's been on the H & H forum for quite a while, lots of people totally fed up with the arsepca

HAND CRAFTED LEATHER GUN SLING
unicornleather replied to psm's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Gaffer makes a nice sling,I'd recommend him, I am up to my eyes in manufacturing for Saddlery retailers, wholesalers and police horse watch groups as well as designing a new type of bridle so I don't have a lot of time to do other work. This is why I haven't been on for a while! My work can be seen in link below (scroll down the home page) and no, I don't just make dog collars! http://unicornleather.co.uk/index.php Oz -

Thanks for your support guys, dogs are on guard duty tonight but can guarantee when you give up watching, they come back, heard of another 2 cars down the road that were done too, one a white Mondeo was so covered there was hardly any white left.Police were out here last night driving round looking for them but no joy.

Got it off with petrol, bloke opposite has moved his van so can't photo it, his wife's car in next road also has a little on it, plus some garages at the end of our road and a house in the next road, they are they ones I have heard about from neighbours and people walking past, so there could be alot more I don't know about. If I let they dogs out to chase them or beat the shite out of one of them which it makes you like doing to them, then I get done or the dogs get taken away, even if police nick them the punishment is often a small fine and a asbo and the b*****ds come back and do it again

Yes, I liked the Arab horses too, was a good bit of filming, Salukis are so graceful aren't they

I'll get a picture of van opposite and show you later, see if anyone can read it

No. it looks like double dutch to me!

Yes, good idea PiL!

4 tyres? What c***s, on'e bad enough, I had the back window smashed on my Suzuki Jeep, they nicked a bag out of it and to finish off so I couldn't chase them (unlikely as I was no where near the vehicle at the time) they stabbed my NEW General Grabber back tyre in the sidewall so I couldn't even get a punture repair, nice little lot that cost me! I had the front window in same jeep smashed and complete radio/cd player ripped out of dash board with crowbar, (I got rid of the jeep then!) Thing that annoys me is I'm a self employed Saddler, I work damn hard for my money as do others, there's ha

Some kind little scrote has just "tagged" all the way round my new transit van, have they nothing better to do than ruin other people's property. Would like to tag them if I catch them, bloke's transit up the road got done too and maybe others I haven't seen yet, perhaps they just don't like Fords!

Depends on the size of the clip used, these quick release clips used for greyhounds are fairly large, the panic snaps of various sizes can be used on lead ropes to traces on harness. The particular greyhound ones I have are stainless steel, the panic hooks used are diecast and weaker. It's just different manufacturers who make the fittings using different materials that determines the strength of them, not what species they are used on, therefore greyhound clips in this case are heavier duty than the smaller panic hooks.
-
No, it's for a greyhound Panic snaps tend to be used on equines and livestock

unicornleather replied to the big chief's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Gaffer, this is not criticism, it's help and advice, you should really have the metal loop up near the buckle, it's basic leatherwork, it's to stop the end of the strap pulling out and keeps it secure, it's a safety thing. Also, try to shave the turn down so it's smooth against the dog's neck, will make a much more comfortable fit for the dog it's on. Stitching the turns is stronger and safer than rivets too, it's coming on though.Get yourself a strap end punch (pointed) from abbey to help you with the points. A pointed chisel punch is twice as expensive so ignore those or if you pm me I can s -
