no, he never caught anything, just keeps the house safe. Don't know what you mean, whats wrong with the african pointing beagle terrier? atb

He is 20tts and 25kg. The pic above was 2yr ago when he was 27kg.

Nice dog, I could see that being a good all rounder. I have 3/4 apbt 1/4 staff, he's getting on now though at 13 and had a surprising amount of pace in his younger days. Wish I'd had a pup off him, very stable temp. His hips are going though, this last year he has slowed right down, struggles to get up stairs or into the car.

Will do Jim, and thanks again. Top man! atb

Isn't it. The vet I saw was quite young and it took out back for another vet to examine. Two minutes later they conclusively diagnosed a broken knee. You could feel the joint on the bad leg was twice the size of the other. She still managed to sell me some Meloxicam though, which I'm not convinced was needed as I would've thought the pain would stop her from being too active and the swelling would protect it while it healed. In light of this I would suggest people speak to the nurse before booking an appointment and explore all options with the vet before agreeing to expensive procedures.

Another update. The ferret is recovering nicely. Shes regaining movement in her leg and it seems to have set in the right place and looks the same as her other one - it was hanging to the side before. Looks like she may be good for work yet. The instructions for the Meloxicam said cats should only receive it for 4 days max as they could die, so I stopped using it on the ferret after 3 days just to be safe. As it is a painkiller and anti-inflammatory I didn't think it would slow her recovery by stopping use early. atb

Thanks to all who replied, especially Haymin who has sorted me some lamping gear at considerable expense to himself and renewed my faith in humanity! Billy Whizz - what type of dog are you using now, how big is it? and what type will you replace it with, what do you consider to be a good bunny dog? Wirral countryman - you're bang on there. Dog had her first proper run on the maglite last night. Nice flat field, short grass and a single tree in the middle with a bit bush around its base, saw the glint of a bunny's eye at the base of that tree and slowly walked up to it, dog off lead by

Found a battery; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SM126-SM126PC-CB2-CLUBMAN-CLULITE-TORCH-BATTERY-12-7-/130504941752?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item1e62b360b8#ht_1347wt_754 £21 delivered, would this do?

Thanks for the offer Jim, very kind of you.I have a 3 x D cell Maglite, but it doesn't have much range. I'll take it out tonight and try again. I was planning on buying a Tracer 140 with a lithium battery @ £225, but as I said it'll be a couple of months before I can afford that. What would you recommend as the cheapest alternative? Probably not a bad idea to have a cheap spare lamp anyway. Found this ; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cluson-Clu10-Clulite-Rechargeable-light/dp/B0031NFSA0 any good for £30?

Bird - is it worth going out at night without a lamp? The dog seems like she only looks 2-3 yards ahead in the dark, the rabbits bolt for cover maybe 10 yards ahead and she doesn't see them, yet I can. During the day you can see her scanning the whole field. When you say night time do you mean around midnight so its properly dark as opposed to dusk? Thanks, atb

It'll be a couple of months before I can afford a lamp so just trying to make the best of it until then. getting in between warren and bunny won't be easy, but I hear what you're saying and will give it a go. People walk dogs in the field too, so the rabbits are probably quite flighty from this. Cheers for taking the time to answer. ATB

Funny you should say that, I've just got a couple of kits, only 18weeks old though. When there're older...... When you say first light, what time would it be? Sunrise is 06.45 but its really light by then.

Here's my 3/4 wippet 1/4 beddy 18mths old 18tts

Went out last night at 8.00, the sun had gone down, but still light enough to see. Plenty of rabbits about, but it seemed a bit too dark for the dog to see them before they saw her and they were still too close to their holes too give the dog a decent chance. The dog is 3/4 wippet 1/4 beddy 18tts and coming up 18 months old, has had one half grow bunny about three weeks ago, which was recovering from myxi and seems keen as mustard. Went out again this morning at 6.30, only saw a few rabbits this time (same place as last night). I keep the wind in my face, move as quietly as I can and wear dark

Thought I would give an update about the ferret. Spoke to the duty nurse who explained the potential issues and options (thanks bribri988, good call). Took her for a consultation this morning, they wanted to knock her out and x-ray - approx £65 and another £25 consultation fee. I asked if they could diagnose without an x-ray, which they did and said she has a broken knee. They prescribed a week of Meloxicam @ 0.3ml per day and to rest her for two weeks. Hopefully she will make a full recovery and it only cost £32. ATB

Just to add, she doesn't seem in pain.

One of my gills (16 weeks old) has injured her back leg, I'm guessing a dislocated hip. when I pick her up one leg just hangs limp and when she walks she drags it out stretched, when running it lifts a bit. I'm about to call the vet, just wondered if anyone has had a similar problem and what was the outcome? Any thoughts as to how much this will cost? Thanks

thanks for taking the time to answer. I'll get back out there then

So, my little whippet x had her first rabbit this morning !! happy days. However, i think the rabbit was diseased. The corners of both eyes (where the tear duct would be if they had them) was inflamed and peeled back, leaving very sore looking flaps. I don't think i was myxomatosis as that usually causes swelling around the eyes. Any ideas? My main concern is that my dog won't catch what ever the rabbit had. Also, i wasn't sure what to do with it, so i dispatched it and left it in the wood where i found it. TIA

Okay, my pup is only 12 weeks old (beddy/whippet) so I know there'll probably be another dozen new ones on the market by the time I need one, but I'm looking anyway. I hijacked a thread somewhere on here with a similar question, so though I'd start my own topic. The Sportlight 140 with dimmer looks decent for £, but Deben also do one called Tracer Gamekeeper for £85, some from here said to avoid the tracer models as they're not bright enough. It just looks more compact and discrete, more torch than pro-lamper. Theres plenty of smaller fields round my way and I'm only after rabbits.

Is a lot of spill a good or bad thing? Frank Sheardown in "The Lurcher training and hunting" says "a narrow beam is not the best in which to run a rabbit". He apparently prefers a 55w lamp of 250,000 cp with a 6.5 amp/hr battery. I'm thinking of buying a Tracer 140 50w with a 8amp li ion battery or would you good people suggest a different set up, its just for rabbits with a beddy/whippet.

Has anyone experienced issues with chipped dogs developing tumours at the chip implant site? I read about this ages ago in an article somewhere has anyone else heard of this? atb P
