  3. Not worried about size really. I admire pointers, considered them a few years ago but they weren't really the type of dog that I thought I could give what they wanted/needed, like I said in the thread starter, I'm liking what i've been reading about the gun dog crosses. There's another thread out there at the moment about personality traits of dogs and how we get on with the different types and how it takes a lot of dogs before you find the breed/mix that you hit it off with. I bought the sal/whip/grey out the back of Countryman's Weekly, having read what I thought was a fair bit about th
  4. Socks, Somewhereyournot - I'd sort of over looked the collieX - the classic cocktail! To be honest, i guess, thinking about it now, my experience of collies, both as pets (seems like a cruel concept to me) and to a lesser degree working sheep dogs is that they can be a bit neurotic but the fact that it's so often used as a cross obviously has a lot to say for their ability - as you say, if they're well bred then perhaps that's not an issue? I certainly wouldn't discount them as a possibility and I'd be interested to meet/see some at work for sure Thanks!
  5. Thanks for that - I was worried about getting some shit - I don't profess to have the knowledge or experience of many of you on here but I greatly respect those who do and are willing to share it - so thanks!
  6. mainly rabbiting, picking up and plenty of running about, something with a coat as i'm outside most days
  7. Hello all, It's been a few years since the last dog's untimely demise but the timing is looking good for me to get a new pup, my other half has even offered to pay for it for my birthday which is kind - i think she might be stalling for time before having a baby People on here have a said lot of good things to say about some of the gun dog x's as good all round dogs for fur and feather. Having had a springer and a lab growing up and more recently a whip/sal/grey the idea of something in between sounds appealing and suitable for spending days with me out in the woods. There was some
  8. Great that . Yep, those whippets are too fragile to run over rough ground though! lol amazing watching the dog move over those jumps and keeping up so close, dread to think of them getting tangled up tho, it was bad enough when mine decided to run right into the side of me in the park at 5mph...
  9. Max, did you ever hear anymore about that lab mating?
  10. Was that when she was in the New FOrest Sirius?
  11. When i asked someone on on here, i remember someone warning me of the 'red mist' - I always remember that! har har
  12. As mentioned before, I'd be interested to hear how this plan develops, best of luck!
  13. Hello, I'm on the look out for a new pup and from what everyone's written I'd be interested to know if a litter was planned. I grew up with a lab, she was my best friend as a kid, bright, full of energy and gentle, much like the lurcher that i owned up until recently; but he was a bit more stubborn than bright i think, i never could quite tell... I've not been on the forum for a few years since the lurcher was killed and it seems like lots has changed out there when it comes to buying and selling puppies, I don't feel confident of buying one that hasn't been bred for the right reas
  14. I remember giving my last dog a salmon head, he didn't know what to do with it at first but soon polished it off once he got into it, his coat looked and felt beautiful afterwards. There was a dog food from canada called Origen, i think, that was a dried food with high protein and no carbs, it was a bit pricey but i felt like it was a good alternative if i didn't have any meat for him, he didn't used to like it all that much tho, can't blame him really, bit boring those brown blogs of dry-ness
  15. I know i don't know you but sorry to hear that about your pup, hope you find a good replacement.
  16. Good luck with the sale, and good on you for the honest write up, hope she finds a good home
  17. Sorry to hear, hope you have some good news soon. I know how it feels
  18. cheers all. He was good lad, really sorted me with rehabilitation after a bad accident myself. Part and parcel...
  19. Thanks people, but bad news i'm afraid, got a phone call yesterday. A lady found him a few hundred meters away from where he ran off, must have got in with the horses and donkeys whilst chasing rabbits. Looks like he was kicked between the eyes. I doubt he even knew what happened and he died doing what he loved. The main thing is now I know and i got to say goodbye, he's down the bottom of the garden now. Thanks to you all for your kind words and support, All the best for 2013
  20. For endurance athletes the base foundation seems to be low intensity but a lot of it. I started running with the dog on a longish lead - good for both of us.
  21. Thanks to all those at doglost.co.uk, the Stray Dog Sanctuary, New Forest Lost Dogs and all the other people out there who help reunite people with their dogs. I've been overwhelmed by the support and concern from complete strangers when it comes to looking for my dog, meeting people out whilst walking who've heard from someone, from someone else in a neighbouring county and have spread the word, put up posters and made Facebook pages in an effort to find him. You have my utmost respect - thank you.
  22. same stamp of every other aint it.. And you realy add quality to the forum ? Cheers. Aye it's a good bit o banter isn't it
