    thanks to all who responded, the dogs seem to be on the mend, one of them is still oozing blood and puss but the worse case scenario seems not to be what we were thinking thankfully cheers all

    That was my worry but the Forest has been so dry, even the normally boggy heathland isn’t that wet; also it seems that it’s more common on feet first- plus they’ve not shown any kidney problem signs like excessive water consumption and pissing all over more things than normal. Maybe I’m just trying to be optimistic or pessimistic as the Roy seems to act so fast that by the time blood tests have come back the danage to their kidneys is almost irreparable. The vet mentioned plasma transplants as an option if it were to go that far. im hoping that it’s simply an allergic reaction as has also

    You can,t really see the swelling in the first photo but he looks like a comedy witch from side profile; just shocked at how quick it came on...

    Hello all, just got back home aftr work to find that the second dog has come down with a rapid swelling on the nose with accompanying blistering, weeping of puss and blood. There was a small cut one day ago but no other visible signs this morning. the other dog (the white one in the photos) developed a slight swelling on the bridge (no discolouration) which develped into what you can see within aprox. 24-36 hours. Only previous injury was a scracth or two around the mouth following an encounter in the woods where i work sometime last week... off to the vets in an hour but would

    A breed i heard about from reading Col. Hancock is the Cretan Hound, it's one of the so called primitive breeds that's remained pretty much unchanged for possibly (?) as long as the Saluki. He put me in touch with a guy just outside of Athens; as mentioned previously, a very nice chap and he seem to know his onions.     I got hit by a van whilst on my bike a few years back, ended up in hospital, bashed up, a minor stroke and it gave me PTS. The NHS provided me with a psychotherapist to help; I'd never hunted prior to that but I remember telling her that i felt the need to kill something and eat it, i'm not sure she really understood it but that's when i started fishing and a few years later bought my first dog which i started rabbiting with.     yep, same as me, I dug the hole, put him gently in covered him, and couldn't see the path up the garden because of the tears, he was my best mate. won't ever get over that one. There was something helpful about being able to bury him though, would probably help people get over losses if they were allowed to be more involved in the whole thing...

    Really great thread this, certainly helping to fill in some knowledge gaps when it comes to certain traits thanks to all the input of everyone on here. If only those who are so ignorant about the beauty of working dogs could take the time to read and learn from those with experience and knowledge to share that can be found on here - truly a mine of information! If anyone's thinking/planning a gun dog X litter then there's a good home waiting here. Cheers everyone

    thanks for the reply Sandymere, that all seems to make sense to what little i know, however do you think there would be any influencing the outcome if the dam was a F1 crossed to a line bred sire or if the mating was vice versa and the dam was the line bred part of the deal?

    Forgive my ignorance, and this may have already been covered elsewhere but I was hoping for a bit more clarity in my head - I understand the benefits of F1's but having just been reading a thread where someone asked if it 'was the dam that was _____*' (*breed) when talking of a f1/pure breed X... On someone's recommendation from here I read Plummer's book on lurcher breeding some time ago, i either missed the bit where he talks about the following but it got me wondering what difference you think it makes in breeding - would pups tend to throw more one way or the other if it was a pure

    ...it seems strange that there aren't more litters as each thread I read of these types of crosses seems to be full of praise for them. There's a thread somewhere on here that I didn't realise at the time but it's about 4 years old and there's plenty of pages and there's barely a bad word spoken... I'm in the market if anyone's thinking about it...

    Very interesting thread with some real interesting options and knowledge shared - nice one, hope it keeps coming! There's been a lot of good talk about gun dog crosses, most certainly versatile X's which would fit in with what we're looking for - anyone seriously thinking of a litter? You got any pics of your X you could share Pointer?
