Hello Goldfinch and welcome to the forums, I am new and a trawl through the sections on here will answer almost every question about what people like or dislike. Personal likes as far as working types will always vary amongs lurcher owners, I dont like bull crosses for instance although my latest is a wheaton bull cross!(so I am converted). I 100% agree with this post. I think 6 weeks is too early for a pup, 7 weeks is borderline and 8 weeks perfect. If people breed for money then the sooner the better, and the new owner ends up with all the problems. A new pup should be treated like a human baby, given love, warmth and comfort. If you think the constant crying is a problem for you think about what the poor pup is going through.

Nose down bushers always get caught up in snares left by people who dont know how to set them right. Loads of shoots in our area and there are plenty of snares left on ground but with permission granted most locations are known and avoided. I always try to keep all dogs in sight, I never let them wander, hard to do with bush rushers I know but it does happen from time to time. The old gin traps were worst, seen plenty a working dog maimed and put down through them things.

New pups should be fed what the owner or breeder fed for the first few weeks, then gradual replacement of your normal food stuff over the next few weeks. New pups will always be timid, they dont know you or the environment, just show loads of encouragement and get your staffi to interact and play to bring the pup on. Good natural love and effection and soon enough your pup will be as good as yours.

Cheers mate, the sire is a good worker, and will strike all game first time, even at 30" he can take rabbit. His parents were very good workers so the breeding is first class. The dam is still young and I have yet to bring the best out of her. The trouble is that in these days people want smaller lurchers I guess. All the pups have gone to people who know they are on to a good thing

He said he had taken her with other dogs to try and get her to pick up. On her own she just runs them and makes no attempt to even strike.

If she is retrieving then all is not lost, normally a seasoned dog would give her the idea if this fails one other way is to use a lure. Some of her favorite treats as a reward when she strikes at the lure. It could take you some time to get her to do it, so patience is the key.

It would appear from the replies that most people on here hunt properly, the young and inexperianced hunters would hunt all year round. Whats the point in letting a dog run a heavily pregnant rabbit? no sport there. They will even hunt when there is mixxy about. Everything has a season, and if you want to keep hunting you have to stick to the seasons, otherwise there will be nothing to hunt. If its pest control then dogs are not the best solution and it has nothing to do with hunting, its pest control, two very different things. Most of the all year rounders do not get that many and often
