Bsa Lightning
barrywhite replied to Lancashire Hunter's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
the gun can be shot accurately in 177 but the gun has a lot of recoil and a heavy trigger (mine has a heavy trigger I think they all do ) .When shooting the gun this has to be allowed for .With a lot of practice the gun can be shot accurately I would think 22 is not that different .I would not bother changing your barrel .The expense for one also if you look the lightning it is just banged to gether .the pin that holds the barrel in place must be tapered I think , they come loose and can become a problem I have read so if your barrel is working leave it alone .If you want a 177 get another gun -

Bedding In Piston Seal

my omega shot ok but under powered so i thought new spring .after the new spring only one pellet would shoot ok from the gun before the new spring lots of pellets shot ok from the gun .The new spring also destroyed I scope in a short time the gun was that harsh to shoot .after shortening the spring the gun was fine if you have an xs spring and not a standard hw spring or similar that may be your problem .I have used 2 xs springs one in a bsa lightning 177 perfect the other in a omega I had to remove maybe 5 coils maybe . -
Bedding In Piston Seal

I would have left the leather washer if it was working and bedded in to late now . I had a stupidly powerful spring on a webley omega .It was shooting at 12.5 ft lbs harshly .I thought it would loose a bit of power in time it did not ,so I started to cut bits of the spring the power went up to 15 ft lbs so I kept cutting bits of the spring until the power dropped to 11.5 ft lbs . the gun shoots nice now .So if you have every thing perfect in your gun with a to powerful spring I would say that could be stopping you getting full power .If the gun is harsh to shoot that could be a sign .the 4 mm -
Bedding In Piston Seal

the max power of the gun is governed by the size of the air cylinder .If you put in the strongest spring known to man with the shiniest steel and the slipperiest grease ever you will still only reach a max power .Once I had a spring with a lot of power in a gun that made the gun loose power by shortening the spring the power increased .A to strong spring would be possible in a hw 35 I would think .If the gun has a max power of 11 ft lbs a to strong spring could cause this problem. -
Bsa Lightning Trigger Spring
barrywhite replied to Lancashire Hunter's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
year ago there was information about this on the bsa owners sight ,but I dont think it is possible to become a member ,I have tried twice . Others have also tried .when looking at the pictures on the site it looked a bit of a nightmare replacing the trigger mechanism , but having the trigger and its components with the pictures in front of you it might not be so bad . type bsa lightning trigger mechanism into google . -

I had a hw 35 a long long time ago from new I did not like the gun .One of the problems I was lead to believe at the time was the inside of the cylinder was rough .So I polished the inside of the cylinder with a piece dowel , a piece of rag rapped on the end and some metal polish .I pushed the dowel in and out of the cylinder with the rag and metal polish until the inside of the cylinder was like a mirror .I did not use a drill with a rotation action the fine scratches with this method would not be so good .this polishing that I did to my hw 35 made the gun shoot a lot smoother and more accura -

Rat Catcher Scope Stability Issue
barrywhite replied to RemyBolt's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
i made a little bit of scope rail out of aluminum and attached it where the rear sight goes and used the two scope mounts at the front .this is a little better . -
in the bad old days with webley mark 3 , bsa airsporters and bsa meteors ect being the only guns available .With only v sights and the power out put of the guns being 10 ft lbs in 22 and 9 ft lbs in 177 .the v sights limiting your range to ...not that far ...your best caliber is going to be 22 BUT with modern pcps getting 177 s up to the same power as 22 s 12 ft lbs ,with excellent pellets available . a 177 will stop a rabbit at 50 yards with ease ,the speed of the 177 pellet makes life ease for the shooter not the rabbit.

I had a bsa essencial scope[ i think from memory ] one of the turrets popped of when using it on a lightning .I didnt look to hard when throwing the scope away but the turrets looked like they were held in place with little screws . one of these screws came loose and fell out with out my knowledge ,if I had tightened the screw before the turret fell of I may have saved the scope .

the way the old seal felt was probably correct and if it didnt have a split it would have been fine .It may be possible to remove some piston seal with very fine wet and dry holding the piston in a drill , remove a little at a time, years ago i did that when fitting a leather seal .The worst that could happen is you need a new seal if you remove to much .
