  2. Hi, last year because of the poor growing conditions I had to plant kings winter cover mix after most of our maize failed, I took the chance as a last resort and I couldn't believe how well it did, I will say it lacks real feed value so you need to feed it heavy. It held up to all the weather even under water at times the birds held well too, its really cheap and easy to sow I just spun it on top, I was told by kings to mix in utopia into the winter cover mix don't do this as utopia needs to be drilled to grow to its true potential much to my disappointment !! not a blade came up you
  3. The 270 comes into its own when you home load, i load a 90 or 100 gn for fox and muntjac and 130 for the bigger stuff, the recoil isnt to bad and a good sound mod will help plus needed as they are bloody loud the 270 is the marmite of calibres ive used a 270 15 ish years and still love it, however i will admit to now using a 223 for fox.
  4. i dont really want to comment on the last keeper, but they never set dates after the 27th because of no birds, i have totally changed things around we dont even shoot any of last years drives, i moved every game cover and its paid off, hand fed too. dogged in lots and stopped the birds being nicked by the next door shoot
  5. The standard of shooting is poor at best we have 2 novices this year we talking 6 to 1 on flat ground ! should of had 10 guns per shoot day but had only 8 most times, lost 2 main covers early on so not worth shooting not because no birds but couldnt get round them, pens flooded out, things can only get better i would like to think, its been hard going this year for most.
  6. Today was my last day! just beaters day to go, we broke the shoot record the last 3 shoots in a row. i still have hundreds of birds here, its my first year on the place and i gave them a record year, roll on next year happy season lads

  8. No chap i didnt , maize does grow well round here but not this year of course, i ended up will only 50% maize this year and the rest millet and winter cover which has come very well thank god, my millet is just flowering i see today. its been a hard year this 1
  9. I live in bucks i have done a few wasps but not many, fleas and bedbugs are the in thing for me and moles, its a welcome break to me last year i was run off my feet with the bloody things! i am just glad that i dont depend on wasp and bee work, i know alot of companys that may go bust,
  10. the maize didnt come very well so a patching up job is needed, i am going to use kings winter cover mix with utopia added to it, i am trying to see the positives where the maize didnt take as luck would have it is ideal for flushing points!! or a good wind break, i will be spinning food through anyway, the millet is slow and my sorgum has just started
  11. Hi chap here in buckinghamshire i have only just got mine in, we put in two covers two weeks ago and four on sunday, today i redrilled one of the first plots as the seed rotted, the bloody ground has been to wet to get on, we planted maize millet and sorgum, lots of slugs around too so plenty of slug pellets needed, my remaining crop from my first drilling session is going well ready for some fert soon,
  12. Thanks for all of your replies, i am going to orders buckthorn, crab apple, hazel, quickthorn (hawthorn) and wild privet, mix from kings, also fell the trees where needed, i have just taken over the estate this year and i have plenty to get on with, the wood is going to take time and the boss has been told this and is happy so far!!!!
  13. There is no cover at all under the ash trees this woodland has not been worked on for 20 years i know of, we are felling some trees to let light through to the ground, i am thinking of planting box in the clearings, its in need of roosting as this is bleak aswell, the deer are kept on top of so lack of cover can only be due to canopy blocking out the light, if anyone has worked through the same problem i would very much like to hear from you
  14. hi all having my ash wood cleared out alittle to plant some ground cover for pheasant , what have you guys planted and what difference has it made?

  18. Years ago my uncle asked me to go lamping on our fields which we rent out to horse people, the rabbits had been eating the locals veggie patchs, he told me to let the people know who we rent it too so i rang and left a message, at 12 ish i was out catching these bunnies when i see a light heading my way , i waited the other side of a low cattle water butt for them to get to me, this very rude posh bird started going mad at me saying what was i doing on her ground!!! i said to her i didnt know we had sold it lol which we hadnt, that shut her up, she then said you could of let me know, i said ch

  20. Hi mate its happens sometimes a bitch to go off there food for a day or two 3 days is starting to push it tho, are you sure that there are no more pups left in there!! and she past all her after birth? or the bitch may have a infection, first time bitchs may be very proud of there pups so she will need time to settle down, just make sure food is down at all times and plenty of water, when they get in the later stage of welp there gut shrinks because the pups take up all the room so they cant eat much and it takes a week ish to get back to normal, make sure the bitch is going to the loo drag
