  1. Can anyone tell me if the optilock range of scope mounts bolt directly to the rifle action, or simply rely on the grip afforded by the bases to the scope rail? I've had a look at some images and can't decide either way. I'm reluctant to shell out so much on a system that might not be 100% solid. Novice
  2. Can amyone tell me whether there was a Artemis range before the 2000 was released? If so, how long has it been since the 'standard' Artermis range was available, and how do they compare to the 2000 series? Novice
  3. Is that the official line, or just your personal experience?
  4. So I take it a dive shop would be the place to take it and the testing regime would be the same as for a steel bottle?
  5. Can anyone tell me what the testing regime is for carbon fibre air bottles? Is it every 5 years as per the steel ones? Also, can anyone recommend somewhere to get one tested, preferably in Manchester/Cheshire? Would a dive shop be likely to test it? From what I understand the carbon bottles aren't too popular with divers as they are so light and boyouant that you need concrete boots to get underwater! Novice
  6. Can anyone recommend some 'plug-type' hearing protection that allows you to hear ambient sounds but cuts out the noise of the rifle going off. I've seen the custom made ones which look the part. Does anyone know of somewhere that offers these without asking funny money for them?

  8. Wish I was given gifts like that! I understand they are the dogs whatsits when it come to glassing the hill. I mate of mine was looking at them, but went for the Swarvoski instead. Not sure why, but I will ask him when I see him. If you are looking to get rif of it I'm sure I could come up with a price to take it off your hands
  9. Can anyone tell me if there is a major difference between Molykote 33 and 33L? Also, would it be safe to use the 33L when servicing a rapid 7? The reason I ask is that I can get 33L at a much better price than 33! Cheers, Novice
  10. Cheers for your views gents. Novice
  11. I appreciate that you can't expect to rely on a boresighter to establish an initial zero, but do they offer a quick check facility of an existing zero? Have you had any experience of them? If so, would you be willing to mention brands/models and where you felt they fell down? Cheers, Novice
  12. I've had a trawl through the archives and noted the various opinions regarding whether or not to use one of these for initial sighting in. What I was wanting opinions on was how useful they are for checking the zero on your rifle prior to a stalk. I travel up to the Scottish Borders for most of my stalking and tend to travel up early hours and then get cracking straightaway, so it's not practical to take some sighting in shots. I had an experience in the summer where the scope was off and I had a shot on the first morning which didn't go where I wanted it to. I was hoping a boresight
  13. Cheers for the reply v-max. I'm more than happy to listen to people such as yourself who are out there and doing it. I try to read everything I can on stalking and don't doubt that I will never stop learning. I was looking for comments as the guy I was with, and others he had spoken to, expect June to be fairly quiet with so much cover about and we were surprised to see them well out into the fields.
  14. I thought I would put this in this thread as I'm hoping Foxdropper can shed some light on the matter. Just how early is it possible to see rutting behaviour? I ask having returned from a 2 day trip to Dumfires and Galloway. We saw 13 deer over the 2 days, 3 of which were bucks. Of the bucks, 2 of them were seen travelling across open fields. They were undisturbed and weren't feeding, but moving across goodly distances, sniffing, rootling about and generally 'on a mission'. The chap I was with felt that they were displaying behaviour more normally seen in the rut and was amazed t
  15. While flicking through an old magazine ('What Gun 2002/03' - I really should have a clear out! ) I noticed a listing for the PES T12 in aluminium, coming in a little at half the weight of the standard T12. Does anyone have one of these or any experience of them? Are they still in production? Surely they have got to prove a good choice over a lot of the aluminium mods now on the market? I have a SS T12 and my only gripe with it would be the weight.
  16. Thanks for the comments Foxdropper. You have obviously had quite a bit of experience with the species. Out of interest, do munties also bark in alarm, like roe? If so, is there a noticeble change to the tone? Novice
  17. Thanks for the prompt replies fellas. It's a Mk1 in .177. Any views as to how many shots I should get out a fill for the 280cc and 400cc bottles and how many of these will be useable for hunting? It would be nice to see how many people are getting in practice, rather than the estimates given by theoben. A mate has one of those chronys that fit on the end of your barrel and a computer programme that will record the data so you can play about with it and get to know your rifle. I will be using air arms pells through it. Cheers, Novice
  18. Hi folks, I'm looking for some advice on charging a .177 Rapid 5 (12ft/lb). The info on the Theoben website seems a little confusing to my simple brain! I have both the 280cc and 400cc bottles and I intend to put the rifle on the chrono over a full charge to try and get an idea of the power band. My questions is: 'to what bar should I be charging the bottles to get a full charge?' I'm always a little wary when I'm charging the bottles and don't like to push my luck. Would just like to know that any figures I calculate in terms of the consistency and power band are going to be
  19. If I was lucky enough to grass a buck like that, I would be tempted to have the whole lot set up. Any idea how much a full body mount would cost? There has been a few letters over the past few months in Shooting Times discussing roe with white markings, both to the face and body. Perhaps they are more common than people think. Now has anyone come across a true black roe, or are they a bit of a myth??
  20. Had a munty barking out the back of my girlfriends place down in Suffolk at the weekend. Not sure if it was a buck or doe, but it was bloody persistent, until the neighbour went out flashing a torch about! Saw a buck chasing a doe about the next morning around the gardens, so could be linked to the breeding cycle??
  21. I bought a Lightning after having a shot with someone elses. I was well impressed with the low report. In hindsight, I reckon it must have had a gas ram fitted. My Lightning was never as quiet, even when Sandwell Fieldsports had tweaked it. I was always a little dissapointed with it, especially with such a big can on the front. I would think you would be better going for the Air Arms if you can stretch to it. The gun was more than accurate enough, but I always struggled with the small dimensions of the stock. The silencer had a habit of working itself loose after a few shots as well,
  22. I have a pair of Leupold Windriver Cascades 8x42. Picked them up cheap 2nd hand on ebay. Seem clear enough and gather sufficent light for my needs. I can also use them all day without any eye strain. Good value.
  23. If you look at some of the earlier threads, Baldie was good enough to answer my queries regarding using a .308 proofed PES T12 mod on a .243. Glad to say that his advice was spot on as always and I used my set-up with great success on a trip to the Borders last month. On the PES, in my limited experience they seem pretty bomb proof, being stainless steel throughout. I did have some problems getting it open to clean it initially (it was 2nd hand) but now that's not a problem and I ensure I keep it off the rifle and the threads lubed. It's a heavy bit of kit, but does the job nicel
  24. thats me local place on top to feck there though everyone goes there must admit , wynyard does get abit hammerd now as does samsung woods , ive been over POW HILL way near consett and seen them ... That really does suprise me. Wouldn't have thought the ground would be right for them up there. Roe maybe, but munties
  25. Hi Gary. I see you use a PES moderator. What do you think of them? I've just bought a T12 and will be giving it a whirl this Sunday, but I'm always open to hear what other think of the kit I use. Novice
