  1. Can anyone give me a heads up as to somewhere to fill my cylinder in South Manchester/Cheshire? Just been to the dive shop in Cheadle Hulme to find it has closed down! How rude of them not to tell me, I've been in there at least once in the last 2 years... Novice
  2. I was talking with a keeper up in the Borders earlier in the week and he was telling me about John Halstead, the labrador man, and his pack of hounds that they use on fox drives. Has anyone seen them work? This keeper was saying that Halstead has them on a string. Was he pulling my leg or what?!?! Novice
  3. Cheers for the info. I always wondered why some areas have wild populations arising from park escapes while others don't seem to. With set ups like Tatton, Lyme, Eaton and Dunham Massey I can never understand why Cheshire doesn't have a large wild population. Obviously there are some pockets, but they aren't exactly wall to wall deer outside the park confines! Novice
  4. Ha ha, afraid I fall down on the money side of things so it will have to remain a tentative enquiry! Out in interest, are the red and fallow park deer? I know of some free living fallow in North Yorks, but I'd be interested to know if there is a head of wild reds around that area. Cheers Novice
  5. I was having a mooch about their website today and noted that they mention deer stalking in the list of fieldsports that the estate is involved in. Does anyone know if they take paying punters out and has anyone stalked the ground? Cheers Novice
  6. Read your post last week and it geed me up to dig out some of the ones I have. Watched the sika one the other night. I've also got the gold medal roe one. Think it is that one where a bloke whacks a roe with a .300 win mag and it runs 20 yards without looking like it had been touched, until another shot put it down (although it looked a bit far back to me). Just makes you think about all the calibre chat you see on the forums, but reality can sometimes prove the best theories wrong! Will look out my other ones when I get the chance. I've also got hold of the newish dvd from Nordic
  7. You really have done a cracking job on cleaning up those heads in such a short space of time, but I'm sure you get plenty of practice! Not sure you have been asked before, but any tips as to how you speed the process up? Always seems to take me ages. Cheers Novice

  9. Has anyone fished this place for trout? Is it worth a visit? Any tips or tactics for approaching it? Cheers Novice
  10. Have they stopped manufacturing their chronographs? I can't seem to get one anywhere and their website says they don't have any stock. I've tried calling but no answer. Anyone know what the craic is? Novice
  11. Fence post looked fine to me, but I'd have thought someone would have given him a heads up to rest his hand between the rifle and the post, rather than sit it directly on the post. Not sure whether that contributed to the slightly wayward shot, as I'd have thought it would have made it jump slightly, as that's what I understand is the rationale behind not resting a gun on a hard surface. Novice
  12. Has anyone lost a bird (possibly a peregrine, although I'm not up on the imported birds enough to identify one on the field) near Pickering, Yorks? Clocked one about a fortnight ago, jesses and bell in place. Apologies for the delay in posting, but not been near the computer. Novice
  13. Seems like a just reward for all the hard work in the rut taking clients out! Look forward to hearing how he scores. Novice
  14. I've seen reds and fallow with my own eyes, and know of roe that have been seen dead and alive in the county. Novice
  15. Would you be able to provide some more info on where in the UK (I presume??) it was shot?? That has to be just about the most impressive head I have ever seen! The thickeness is unreal. Has it been measured yet? Is there any likelihood of it pushing the record? Novice

    Starling query

Hi all. I'm hoping you guys can answer a question that has been put to me, for which I admit I have no definitive answer I've been asked whether it is legal to use a hawk/falcon in a scaring role to move on a colony of starlings. It's my understanding that starlings are now a protected species in England and Wales, but I'm not sure if this extends to flying a bird against them. Cheers Novice
  17. Thanks for the reply wireviz, I will let you know how I get on once I get it measured. It would be fantastic if it did go a medal, as it is off a mate's lease and the head is far, far away from what we expect, and indeed normally get, on this ground. He was a big old boy, so hopefully he will have passed his genes on and if we don't hammer them, something similar will appear again in a coouple of years. Novice
  18. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much weight a roe head will lose in the 90 days before measuring? I've a head that weighs 410 grams a month after it was shot. Just wondering how much it might lose before it can be measured. Novice
  19. Hi Dazza I just stumbled across it when having a mooch around on there. Not sure how rare it is, but I'm well happy with my copy! Good luck in getting your hands on one. Novice
  20. Cheers for the replies gents. Sounds like a decent fella. Pity he didn't publish any more books, these are the type of blokes who's story is worth telling. Novice
  21. Just picked a copy of this up off ebay. Seems a good read and afairly sensible terrier man. Has anyone else read it? Does anyone know his background and what became of him? Did he write anything else? Novice

  23. The plant wouldn't happen to be in SW Scotland by a chance would it Cumbrian? Novice
  24. I that your stalking knife in the 3rd picture? No wonder you managed to get the gralloch out quickly
  25. Interesting to see the colour variations between the 3. Do many people see those like the bottom one with the black belly? If anyone has any photos of interesting colour variations I would love to see them. Foxdropper, what makes you say she was suckling cubs? I can't see that her belly has been overly stripped. Are there other signs to look for? Novice
