I had a 17 a couple of years ago, I liked it and it did seem to shoot well and flat,no ricocheys like you guys said but before I supressed it it was real loud, the only 2 down sides are the cost of ammo and the noise if its not supressed. I also found when your getting out a bit it doesnt take much of a breeze to nock that tiny bullet around so some thing to think about too. I found the 17grn ammo to be better than the 20grn, but that was just me in my rifle. So who knows what ever choice you make it wont be a bad one any of the calibers is a good choice. Shortening 22rf barrel - enough twists?

Youll be ok to go down to 12 easy and you wont loose any accuracy if anything it should get slightly better as long as its crowned properly the shorter the barrel the stiffer it wil be. Stiff barrels are generally more accurate because they will vibrate less as the bullet travels down them its why target and "sniper" rifles have heavy barrels on them. As for the number of twists, I dont know much about that. But I do know that you will have more than enough still -
Since I own and shoot both calabers I recon your on the right track, but I'm biased right? I like the .223 I can shoot hares at 300 yards easy, deer and roo's are no problem. It has bugger all recoil, and the ammo is cheap as chips. The .308 is good too I use it a bit less just because in my case my 223 is a semi auto and my 308 is a bolt action, but I've shot plenty of magpies and rabbits with it, it nocks deer over just fine and I dont see any advantage buying a 7mm type caliber over it. Unless your constantly making shots well over 300 meters on deer and things its not really worth buying

Yes they can, but it would take a while. A pig of that size would more likley kill the dogs, that collie X biting at the legs is the type of dog that will cause the damage needed to kill it. I would never want to see that, its a good part of the reason I only use dogs that hold on the head, as I can then still let pigs go without any worry that it wont survive

They should have shot the brindle piece of shit, its boar shy and if it doesnt get ripped up jumping in and out like that the other dog will get killed by not being backed up, running mismatched dogs like that only ever ends in tears. Waste of time even feeding it i would even doubt it catch's pigs

Ned Ive found that too I've tended to think it was due to the amount of natural feed about like if they are around crops they will eat the crop over the dead cow of sheep, also in the colder months here baits wont work so well unless they have been dropped earlier in the summer and had time to go off

Thats because its bullshit, the cow would have been dead first had it had its guts torn out, the ones we dump as bait around here normally dont get eaten till they are going/gone off and there are a lot of hogs around me

Yep thats good, my dogs are the same if they dont hold on the head or learn to early on they are gone, but to stop a pig here they really need a good bite on the arse or its just not going to happen as not many of the hogs me and most of the other hunters catch are not out in the open. A good bite to sit it down then to the head to hold where it can control the pig, If my dogs stop a pig on their owen I would rather they bailed until a second dog got their to help them hold, for some reason they have different ideas its really just to stop them getting hurt and a pig getting away. Ned what are the finding and stopping capability's of your dogs? Do they prefer to wind or ground scent? Do they have a good back end bite to pull pigs up or do they just go straight for the head? The only reason I ask the questions Is I've noticed from u tube and talking to guys a lot of the outback pigs tend to turn and fight rather that run until they have been pulled up hard by a bight to the arse? And often the pigs are spotted then the dogs are let go or a close find from the back of the truck/bike. You guys over there use very different dogs to what we use here, and the guys in t

You really need to get on top of that kind of behavior early on. If it showing that kind of behavior give it a clip round the ear, as for chasing stock it just comes down to training if you dont trust it leave it at home and dont wreck the rest of your dogs, your mates dogs or the farmers trust. I hunt bull cross's and hunt them with other people who run the same type of dog we dont have fights well not often because we dont put them in the situation that would lead to a fight. You must have short yards Here I don't know if its the same there but when we changed we had to used 2 shot sizes bigger in steel than we did with lead so if you used a 4 in lead you would use a 2 in steel. This is because steel is much lighter than lead so having the larger pellet compensates for less density.
