Pure Saluki dog, to Pure Whippet bitch? worth it.
KenKeeping replied to KenKeeping's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I spos with a first cross, Sal/Whip, with the whip being a bitch, the pup will probaly more likely to be smooth wont they. Or is it just the luck of the draw. Thought they would follow the Dams stamp, first cross wise. ????? -
Pure Saluki dog, to Pure Whippet bitch? worth it.
KenKeeping replied to KenKeeping's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I see what you are saying. I wasnt so much on about keeping the family lines as such as much as getting a pure bred off him for myself in the future! Probably explained it wrong, Im'e sorry! But as far as whippet/Saluki cross is concerned thats what I would like to do once he has had time to mature. I do like the idea of a small lurcher. But def getting one as a companion, probably a couple of years old. Might lead the Sal up the right path. -
Pure Saluki dog, to Pure Whippet bitch? worth it.

Thanks for input lads! thought it should work out ok, but as the Whippet is such a small dog, would she be able to carry Sal pups ok? I just take for granted that Sal-x pups would be larger than a Whip was used to. What age is the best to leave it till, Aladdin is still only 10mths, so obviously no plans for near future. But its nice to plan ahead and know where I am aiming. Gonna put him to a pure Sal later on to keep his lines, but realy want a Whippet to be company for him in a couple of months. -

My Boy! -
Was thinking of getting a Whippet bitch to run with my Sal dog Aladdin. I think he could do with a companion. If when they wre ready, and I decided to put them together, would the outcome be worth it? I hear a lotof Whip/Sal/Grey cross, so I spos the line has to start somewhere? Just something Im'e chewing on at the moment. Any and all opinions taken on.

Whats with all this theiving of other blokes bloody dogs? There is enough litters out there so the prices are not that bad for them to go and buy a dog themselves. Looking in the Countrymans Weekly, there is always a load of dog that have been nicked in there. And not all running dogs either. If the dogs are being nicked because they are good workers, etc, doesnt that meen that the culprits are prety close to home to know what the dogs are like, or how they are kept, etc etc. Im'e nieve I know, when it comes to all this, but it seems that these days you have to watch who you show wh

My Sal is always rolling in Horse Shit. Its a bit of a larf when on the way home and someone comes across to give him a stroke mind, lol. They shy off next time we meet them, lol. It is from when wild dogs used to camoflage their scent when hunting so I was led to belive. Something we have to put up with. Ive got used to living with my missus, so a bit of shit aint no problem, lol.

Ive been fancying a bit of lure with my Sal. He is only 10 mnths at moment, so hasnt done anything tidy as yet obviously! Shows potential and turns well. Loves to chase, (And be chased) So if anyone in my area uses one and dont mind a novice having a go, or fancies lettin Aladding tag along one day with their experienced dog, would appreciate it big time. Seen some good posts on here about Lures, look easy enough to make dont they?

Some really novice questions....
KenKeeping replied to bluebrindle's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ive found, that questions have to be asked even if they do sound silly in your head! I am a complete novice at running a Saluki pure, and also the hunting scene. I like to read the answers that the knowlegable guys on here give to the questions asked. My Sal, Aladdin has only just started to chase. He seems to be taking to it prety good! He might eventualy be on the same perticular spot as his prey one day, and not come back empty handed, lol Everyone and everything has to learn, aint they, and Ime not rushing him anyway. Your Whip sounds like a lot of running dogs Ive encountered in -
Thats Sunday lunch sorted! Well done!

Good shooting! The farmer will defenatly be asking you to go back and carry on the good work. Your lucky you actualy work on the farm as well. Better than having to go and find permission, a big bonus in your paypacket this week, lol.

Alright chaps and Lasses! My dog Aladdin is out of Dawn Shadow and Dougdales Boy. Does anyone know these dogs, their Sals! Just curious about what kind of parents Aladin had as far as working record is concerned! Dawn Shadow is from Cardiff way, so hpe someone local may know a bit about them. All feedback will be appreciated. Thanks Ken

This is one hell of a pretty dog! Hope your proud to have her to train on? Lovely colouring too!

Well, I took on the responsibility of a pure Sal in october last year! First dog Iv'e taken on since I was a kid! He is, I must admit, a bit of a handfull for a new dog handler, as far as listening is concerned, but treat them well, dont be rash with them, NEVER HIT THEM!! They hold grudges. Gain their trust from an early age and dont let them down. A pure Sal will become a dog to be proud of! He or She, will stay on the job as long and probably longer than any others, as long as you get them fit! Dont overdoe it too quick at first. Watch their legs, they are spindly, and they got a tend

I think you need speed for lamping right enough or a burst of it anyhow. My mate had a cracking collie cross which was the best lamping dog I ever saw. He just knew his job really well....His only fault was squatters, never seen him taking one out of the seat. He'd stalk it till he was within 3 feet and just stare till it ran which to be fair suited us. We weren't doing it for numbers but the love of the chase. My Aladdin is 9 mnths now, a pure and still learning the ropes! He rathers leave anything that is standing still untill they bolt! Good on his feet both day and night! Sals are

Ok guys! Well Im'e a complete novice, and just got a pure Sal dog! Ime not using the tit bit way of training, just praise and patients. I have grown a few more grey hairs since he moved in with us, but I recon its gonna be worth it! So many people put Sals down a lot, and yeh! Iv'e had a few setbacks already with the pup, but by all accounts a Sal dont mature till about 3years. Iv'e accepted that as the point to where he should be a good working dog! Aladdin is so timmid, and runs from a Harris Hawk as soon as it opens his beak, but with a lot of patients I recon he will come on

saluki bull grey x saluki whippet grey pup

Real nice looking pup that Butt!! -
The Jill that was left, didnt look fat and have a grin on her face did she, lol. As Dan says, why steal a ferret when there are so many available these days? Unless its someone that knows you and that your ferret is a good worker or something!
-
As I said, will pop into the food dealers and see what they got as far as ferret dried. These animals are getting more shelf space in the cupboards and freezer than me! lol. I can handle that though.
-
Lol! Now that is extreme! In the past thats what people did mind aint it? As you say, from what the post say, its everyones own choice realy. But I will deff get some ferret dried to try out. Tried all the different dried dog foods for Aladdin the Sal to taste, so why not give the ferret the same treatment. Dont mind the cost, as long as Im'e not doing any harm.
-
Aladdin ain't started getting rabits yet, so I rely on my mates to bring them after they been out shooting! Chickens are a regular meal, as Aladdin has half chicken for breakfast with some dry food, so the ferret has a leg that the Sal cant eat. As I said before! Whatever Aladdin the Sal is eating, then the ferret gets as well! This dry food biz is where Iv'e gone completely wrong then. They are both having Wagg puppy dried food to nibble on all day, so I will have to go and pick up some propper stuff for the ferret tomorrow then. Thanks for the input lads, I knew Id'e probably be d
