Roe stalk yesterday morning in snowy Scottish Borders
mj robson replied to von's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Well done with the stalk Von. One bit of advice I could offer, if you have a good buck following a mature Doe it's best to leave her be if you can. She's keeping the buck there and once she's gone he will likely move to another area. I know it's not always possible to leave Does on certain ground but when given the choice between a young doe and mature one, especially at this time of year we always take the young one's. I cull does on a lot of farms and estates that produce lots of medal class heads each year and on one estate we aren't allowed to take mature does at all, just yearlings a -
I have 3 Snow Goose calls (MSG-96) all tuned to different pitches. I also got hold of an Olt-77 this season which sounds nice too. Most will do the job fine and won't jam when wet. The only real differance with the plastic Snow Goose calls is they are usually about half the cost of a wooden one. Mark.

Don't you believe it! Yes Lucky Scalp does get covered with a big spring tide, especially with an easterly wind pushing it in. I was down there on the 12th and all that was showing was the founds for the old lighthouse, untill a big tanker went past with a 3' bow wave. And that was on a flat calm day. If your going to sit it out make sure you pick a suitable tide and check the forecast! Cheers, Mark.

Dug, As Tom has already posted Quote ""Basically there are No no-shooting zones on the clyde forshore (LWM-HMW)"" I took it that the area in front of your ground had no restricted access. It can be a SSSI and still be shot. The Tay Estuary is almost all a SSSI, part of it is also an LNR and has large sections owned by the RSPB, but it can ALL be shot! There are no bylaws restricting access and the Clyde estuary is exactly the same, as I've already posted!!! Mark.

Tom, Under the new (ish) countryside access laws in Scotland you do not need any of the above to gain access to the crown foreshore. You may LEGALLY cross any land to gain access to the foreshore as long as your gun is in a slip and you are not damaging any crops. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise! The only exceptions are when a bylaw restricting access has been put into place. eg Eden Estuary, Montrose Basin...etc. In these cases there is often an alternative system of access via a permit scheme. Mark.

Skip, We provide a lot of rough walked up days for our clients, It's the most prefered type of game shooting asked for by our guns. We probably provide about 180 client days throughout the season so I'm out and about on the rough shoots about 3-5 times a week! Here are 2 Dutch clients after their 2 days shooting last week, Total bag for the 2 days was 33 Mallard, 21 Pheasant, 6 Grey Partridge, 6 Grouse, 2 snipe and 1 Woodpigeon. One of the guys enjoyed it so much he proposed to his girlfriend on the Grouse Moor after the shooting!!! Cheers, Mark.

Hi Tom, Try macleod's They have a very good selection of fowling cartridges. Cheers, Mark.

There was around 4,000 Pinks flighting past North Berwick on Thursday. They use Aberlady Bay early in September. Mark.

I always use dead birds, the more you put out the better they decoy. Cheers, Mark.

Food for free, You've left it a bit late for this season mate, most guides should be near enough fully booked if their any good. Contact BASC for a list of registered guides. Beware of repeat adverts in the shooting press, there's usually a reason why they have to constantly advertise for clients. Most good guides won't have to advertise and will get booked up with repeat custom and word of mouth, which is why you have to get in there earlier than now! Good Luck, Mark.

We done guys. I had a nice morning, ended up with this lot, That was more than enough for the half hour walk back to the car! Just got back in tonight, took 2 Irish guns out on a flight pond, they shot 13 Mallard and couldn't believe the duck that came in. They'd never done a real duck flight before, now their hooked! Cheers, Mark.

Lee, I've still got 2 weeks left at them but only 2-3 guns each day, so winding down a bit now. I'm looking forward to a week off before the geese! I've done 102 client days for 4113 birds so far this summer including 11 x 100+ bags, had a few raw beginners so the average bag has been good. It's been hard work as I've been doing this pretty much on my own. I'm off out tomorrow morning to try and get a goose. Mark. ps, Mollie1337, the top pick was a 125 bird day.

Apart from the odd day, this summer has been very good in my area for pigeon shooting. There has been more birds than ever before and the bags have been very good as a whole. I only have 1 week left to sell and then I'm fully booked for NEXT summer, all repeat custom. We've had big bags and some busy days but here are a couple of pics of two bags that stand out in my mind from the rest. Junior and the bag. Dissabled client shooting one handed. Cheers, Mark.

Hi Dave, That's not a problem. The game dealer comes every Tuesday and Friday to pick them up, usually a couple of hundred plus each time. Come along the day before and take as many as you like. Cheers, Mark.

Well it's been a busy six weeks at the Pigeons so far, the harvest has been held up well overdue in some areas but the shooting has been very good. There are more birds about this year than I have ever seen before. I'd have been out at the bucks a few more times before now but was waiting for more stubbles to appear, plus I've got a week at them in September so left them alone during this rut. The last couple of stalks I've had 2 novice stalkers out for a change, a 15 year old and a lady stalker. Both got their first buck, nothing big but nice for starters, lets hope their hooked on this wonde

I was driving up the M6 yesterday and as I was coming past Lancaster at 11:50 I saw 2 roe bucks having a good old battle in the middle of a grass field just yards away from the edge of the road! although I only saw them for about 5 seconds they were head to head the whole time, having a good old scrap. The weather was overcast and humid. Has anybody else seen rut activity yet? Mark.

There have been several cases in the past where people colliding with running deer have been killed. It's only takes one slip and you've got an antler in your chest! That and the aforementioned stress factor makes tackling a live deer a very foolish thing to do. Mark.

I started off using federal factory ammo through my 22-250 and got groupings of 1 1/2" which was good enough for what I was using the gun for. I'm not interested in punching paper just shooting Roe, a lot of Does fell over thanks to that round. Then I went to the shop one day and they didn't have any federal so I bought some Sako SP Gamehead 55 grain, slightly more expensive. I checked them for zero and found them to group 1/2" through my gun without touching a thing, I've used them ever since and they have accounted for many deer without any problems. A gamekeeper friend of mine also swe

Hi Alan, This Buck came from ground near an estate where there are 2 Does with this condition, they've been there for a few years now and won't be shot. I've been told it can skip several generations then reappear like many other genetic conditions. Kind of like a dark haired couple having a ginger kid! Mark.

You are correct DS, I guess we learn something new every day! Here is a quote I found from a web page on the topic, Cheers, Mark.

Well done V-max. I can never get photobucket videos to play.

Here's picture of a Piebald Roe buck, shot this morning in Fife by a Danish client. From what I've heard it's more common in Does, but this is one of only a handful of such bucks shot in the UK Cheers, Mark.
-
Well done lads, that big buck look really nice. Let us know what he weighs once boiled off. Mark.

Well done V-Max, its nice to see women envolved in the sport too. Cheers, Mark.
