Novice, I just skin then boil the heads in my Burco for 20-30 minutes (straight into plain boiling water). I then clamp them by the antlers in a mobile workbench and power wash them off. From the field to clean in less than an hour. East Coast, I was talking last week to Alan Alison and he was saying the very same thing to me. A lot of the trophies this year look big but there's no weight to them. I can't say I've noticed it myself but I've only held 20 odd medal class trophies this year from my area, these guys see a lot more from all over the country. Cheers, Mark.

Thanks. I don't shoot many bucks myself but it is nice to get out on my own now and again. Cheers, Mark.

Well done John. Can't beat those early mid-summer mornings. Mark.

I was out this morning at 03:15 for a stalk around an area planted with Cabbage to see if I could get myself a buck. As soon as I got out of the truck I could see a big buck couched in the grass just 100 yards away! I stalked up to about 60 yards and could have taken a neck shot off the bipod but I have to admit to getting a bit of the old shakes and wasn't happy taking the shot! I gave a couple of barks and the buck got up and ran 20 meters to just below a ridge across the field and stood broadside. I could see a couple of feet of shallow backstop above his back before the skyline but decid

In the month of April we shoot some big bucks out in the open fields. Once May starts they retreat back to the woods where there is new growth and then you have to get "up close and personal" in about the cover or woods edge. Once June is here the cover in the woods is too tall and you have to be pretty lucky to get onto a big fella, they get smarter with age! The next chance is the rut or on newly cut fields in late summer. This is the best example of a very old buck going back that I have in my pictures. A heavy skull and thick stumpy antlers that weighed in at 525g dry. Main

A lot of bucks are shot way too early and never make their true potential. The 3 year old 6 pointers we see splenty of in pictures on here could well develope into medal class bucks at 5 or 6. Mark.

Nice Pics Tommy.

That's if they had a permit?? If he was using an estate rifle and was accommpanied at all times he wouldn't need one. Only if he brought his own rifle and/or was being left unaccompanied would he need a police permit. Cheers, Mark.

Well done. The buck on the right must have been a medal??? Mark.

I was out at a friends ground last night and shot this buck which had most of his winter coat left. Cheers, Mark.

John, There is certainly a big difference in the measuring system in the UK and Denmark. About 6 years ago we had a nice buck that scored 126.8cic (602 grams) over here and was remeasured in Denmark where it made a gold medal. The cic should be the same no matter which country you are in. Cheers, Mark.

I've just had news from Denmark that these heads have been provisionally scored and got a gold and 2 bronze. The gold (on the right) scoring 133.25 cic with 575 grams. It has been force dried and shouldn't loose any more weight. I would never have thought it would make a gold in this country. The one we shot in April is much bigger than this. Cheers, Mark.

Thats a very unusual head, well done.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw that picture. Mark.

Thanks guys, It was a good morning and great to be out, esecially to see the young kid. The first buck will hopefully be a good medal class buck one day. The buck we shot was old and weighs in at 620g before drying. FD, I would have said the buck with the swept antlers was middle aged, we talked about taking him but after watching him for a while decided not to. He had reasonable looking main beams and coronets, it was just from the front tines up that he went wrong. He may well produce a reasonable head next year. Cheers, Mark.

I was out for a morning stalk today with a regular client of mine. We saw some interesting things and took a few videos. Then we stalked into a nice marshy area where I knew I had a big old buck working. There he was out sunning himself. A very nice trophy that should make a silver medal. Cheers, Mark.

I take clients out for Roe deer and I've seen hundreds shot. I've seen broadside heart/lung shots missed by experienced shots. I don't believe anyone who says they've shot hundreds of Deer in the head and haven't missed or taken the jaw off a deer. If you shoot enough it will go wrong eventually, a heart/lung shot will reduce this outcome by a long way over a head/neck shot. It only has to go wrong once for you to wish you'd done it differently!! Mark.

That's a very nice buck! It always makes me chuckle when I hear these kind of comments. He's no doubt seen out 7 or 8 ruts already in his life, and his genetics don't change like the size of his head! As a 2 year old 6 pointer he would have passed on the same genes as he will as an 8 year old super gold medal. He was left till after the rut......................last years rut Let us know what he weighs. Cheers, Mark. ps, Is that a frost bitten tine end??

Thats a very nice looking buck, great length and span. Mark.

I did a bit of shooting with the camera this morning. We saw about a dozen nice 6 pointers and a 7 pointer, here's the videos of a couple we left alone. We were after a couple of specific bucks. Cheers, Mark.

We saw another small freak 5 point buck this morning, feeding 40 meters away from us. We left it for another year. I've just spent the last 3 hours cleaning the heads from yesterday. The middle buck should just go bronze and the far right a silver, the freak between them is heavy enough for bronze but it wouldn't make the points. A good days stalking for 2 clients! We were out this morning and saw 2 big medal class bucks but were unable to get a shot in the cover. Cheers, Mark.

Great filming John. Hats off to you for carrying that camera around with you. Every time I think about taking mine out I put it off till next time, but that never comes. One thing that puts me off is the noise it makes when switched on and off, I don't want to risk spooking a buck to get some film. Mark.

Shot a couple of unusual heads this morning. Big 8 point freak head. Not so big 7 point freak head, nice all the same! Saw lots (15+) of nice 6 point bucks with great potential this morning. We also shot a buck with a broken back leg, looks like a fence double wire. Shot 13 bucks so far over 15 outings, hope it continues! Cheers, Mark.

Well done guys, that looks like a medal class buck.
