is kulling unwanted kits more responsible?
wullieh replied to baldockbanks courser's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
So you plan to have a kid but your wife has twins what would you do? just get rid of one, didn't think so so why is an animal any differant. this practise of killing is crap there is no need for it at all if you choose to breed then you should be prepaired to raise the kits until you find homes for them all yes you might have to keep them untill they ar about 6 mths old but if you advertise them then im sure even if it is to a pet owner you will find a home for them, and if having real problems and all has been tried then contact a rescue centre and learn that you dont need to breed, and if -
Your vet will prob give you Baytril for it meaning you have to give it oral twice a day 0.5mls depending on weight of the ferret but they hate the stuff if you have any ferettone dip the end of the syringe in it then when they lick it let the bytril flow. if still open put sudacrem (stuff you use for baby nappy rash) on it for a week this also helps.

Before you get another jill make sure your ferret gets on with it takeit along and let her choose what one she likes, somtimes if a ferret has been on its own it will not take to other ferrets and only fights with them .

I do not like hunting out of season but to make sure i secure my land if asked then i will, some people might not have the choice as land might be hard to get and when they hit a gold mine like i did you wouldnt want to loose it, but my land owners know i also shoot with an air rifle so are happy for me just to gome up during the summer and pop they 3/4 grown bunnies. Keeps the rescue ferrets fed and the land owners happy and keeps me my permision.

1, Dress in casual clothes 2, Dont take ferrets, dogs, guns 3, Choose your timing , dont go when likley to be having lunch or tea 4, Explain that you will have a set of ground rules ie ferrets will have a locator on them and none will be left, all rabbits will be quickly despatched and removed, no litter will be left and any digging will be back filled. 5, Let him know it will be on his terms--He might just give you a small area first to see how you get on. 6, always speak to the land owner in person-never phone to ask or leave a letter (doubt they reply) 7, always stick to the terms

All found good homes as post says but the polecatob died from cancer about 8 mths down the line.

Best to look on ebay to seehow much they go for as spare or repair and try find out if collar works first that way you will get more money, Deben will not touchthe mark 1 finder now as thay will say they dont have the parts......they just try to promote the mark 3, but if collar is working id say approx £50 mate

my friend has now got a third generation hybrid prgramme running he bred so it was50% then diluted it the next twice kept the colour and the speed and also got them that tame you wouldnt know the differance from a normal ferret, as i said my first one was a rescue that i felt was unsuitable to go to a new home and i will not put a healthy animal down, i know people with ferrets that go by the old saying 3 strikes and your out. this is not the case with me as ive had ferrets for 24 yrs and handled thousands of them between the rescue and the game fairs i attend and ive only ever been bitten thr

The hybrid in the second pture came into the rescue and rather than put her down i decided to keep her she ahs never bitten me but as i said i know that they can turn, the other one was somthing i wanted to do to build my ferret experiance up as i know a great deal about ferrets i wanted to see just how tamei could get a hybrid and got tyne a 8 wks and handled her every day she also has never bitten me but has swung her head round when picking her up once up though she is kust like any other ferret i can open her mouth and she dont try to bite.
-
First three pictures are of tyne she is 75% pure polecat or so i am told by my friend who breeds the hybrids and he is a mad scientist so prob know all about the genetics IMG]http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll418/whyferret1/Hybrid003.jpg[/img] IMG]http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll418/whyferret1/Hybrid004.jpg[/img] the next three is of Dee how much hybrid is unknown Must say that ever though my hybrids are tame i do not trust them, when going to pick them up you have to watch as this is when likley they are to bite you but once up they are ok, Note Hybrids might look n

Good to see the wee man enjoy himself teach them young, my lad is only four and been out with me a few times doing pest control, cant wait till he big enough to come for the day on bigger permissions

Same happened to us where we would normally take a bag of 30 plus we got 6 rabbits 5 with the ferrets and one with the air rifle the five we got with the ferrets we had to dig 3 of them out.
-
Yes it works and as for the knocking being slower i see this as a plus as if working two ferrets and one has a mk 1 collar the other a mk 3 collar you soon learn what ferrets where.

Just thought id share a pic to let you see my pegs, now everybody has probebly lost the odd net buy not picking it up but sice i switched to theese ive never lost a net in the last two sesons of using them as they stick right out and a quick glance lets you see if any are still down, they also go into the ground with ease if there a frost.

I spend a lot of my free time during the summer going around the game fairs in scotland trying to educate folk on breeding, but this is to no avail as already said the folk who just got there first ferret wants to breed from it,now lets be honest we all been there and done the same but there has to be limitson the breeding, too often i get a phone call to the rescue centre asking me to take in kits that they have bred and cant find home for. lets face the facts all the jills come into season about the same time so with the pregnancy being 42 days and then if you are a good breeder wont try to

When out with the ferrets i watched two stoats jump in and out of the burrows so sat next to one with my camera hoping to get a pig and i did, cant have been any further than 12" from it when pic was taken.
-
Yes was found under a garden hut so it either been oout hunting and left or escaped and managed to pick them up but would think with that amount it had been on the loose for a while.
-
Im in west lothian in scotland mate been doing ferret rescue for 6 yrs now, and it can be hard work during the summer months.

Yeah thats what i thought, ill shop around if i cant find a vasectomised hobb near us. why not get yourself a hob and get a vas done on hime it pays in the long run the ave cost for to get a hob is about £60 but if you have 2 ferrets paying £30 twice in the same yr for the jill jab it be money well spent id say. just remember you have to keep the hab apart for 10 wks after the op as he still got a loaded gun.

Bathgate ferret rescue Just thought i post some pics of some of the worse case ferrets that have came into the rescue when i remember to take pics. Ferret very under weight but made full recovery Ferret had over 100 ticks removed and had two treatments of frontline to kill the rest , able to be put up for new home 3 weeks after pic was taken. Bite wound that became infected due to entire hobs being left together during breading season made full recovery but was slow.

A bagged rabbit let loose on strange ground it easy pickings as most will run around in circles not knowing where to go if not cowering down just to be picked up by the dog a few yards from being relieasd.
