try a different trap. or
you might be able to get the existing trigger more slippy. try setting it with a small piece of plastic bag pinched flat between the treadle hook and the dog so there is less friction.

i am interested in the behavour of the animals around the traps.
I believe the american trapper, Clint Locklear, did a night trapping dvd on coyotes, coons, cats etc which pioneered improved trapping sets. "Teachers of the night."
Sorry to say they have now stopped the trap production side of their business.
What sort of trap should i be looking for which are well made and good value ?
