Coyote vs. Greyhound: The Battle Lines Are Drawn
UphillDoc replied to Meerihunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Its already happening over here too but I and many others will not go away real quiet like. Dan I was working with some Texans this month in Azerbijian and was very surprised when they told me that hunting and tracking with dogs has been banned in there state ...whod of thought in a place like Texas that pig dogs would be banned so it just shows you it is not just our country that is being opressed . Another funny little story darts in the bars in Texas are made from velcro just incase anyone stabs someone ...but there all carrying guns They must not have been the Texans from -
Kye-You aint gettin any younger, you better get out here soon...of course theres always the chance you wont get any older if ya give it a go... Lion is much tastier than bear, IMO. I have had goes at both lion and bear in caves, its everything you can imagine and then some. If I knew how to post pics/videos I would show some of the close calls... I have been plenty close enough to spear both, but never had a spear, could have knifed the lion Grace had stretched, but was to busy pettin her up and cheerin her on... Take care.

A great example of a "tolling" terriers....
UphillDoc replied to Aaron Proffitt's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
In a light hearted manner, I suppose , Doc. I don't completely agree as even the supposed show Airedales here have shown a disposition to work whether their owners want them to or not. Don't get me wrong, I got my pups where I did for a reason....cause I know what their ancestry is capable of , and didn't buy the first ones I saw in the paper because I don't want to have to wonder. But, I do think that the desire to work is still very much there in 'em. Aaron-The desire to do some work and the desire/ability to kill a healthy adult coyote one on one are miles apart. Just tak -

Some of the larger dogs will kill the yote. As for speed, I think most people around here rely more on stamina. I've known several people that let out packs of dogs in the evening so they can go out and kill yotes. Airdales, Belgian Malnois, etc. IMHO, it's irresponsible not to accompany the dogs. Besides, the fun is in working with them as a team! WTG Aaron, you nailed all the relevant points perfectly! Dux-I think them fellas may have been tellin you a story...I seriously doubt a pack of Airedales or Malnois could even stay with a coyote long enough to make it take a deep breath, -
Speed kills...sometimes it kills the game, sometimes it kills the dog... Speed without control or durability is worthless to ME. Most my dogs are on the smaller side, for stags, but I have seen some dogs that were bigger than mine that could do anything mine could, and seen some that couldnt... Most times its more important whats inside the dog, than what the outside looks like, IMO. If any of you fellas from the other side of the pond ever make it over to hunt, I would bet most fellas with stags would give you pup to take home if ya wanted it, I know I would. Take care.

Dan-You ment coon HOUND and coyote HOUND vs your running dogs (stags). No matter how much road work you give a running dog it will never have the endurance of a trail hound, because they wont hunt in that lope your conditioning them in. Too much work will take away some of their sprint speed and recovery ability, IMO. Do all your conditioning preseason...you hunt more than enough during the season for the stags to stay fit! Remember if you can work the mouth off a bulldog, and the cut out of a rooster, than you can sure work the catch out of a stag... Take care.

At what age do YOU enter a dog to live game
UphillDoc replied to FightTheBan's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My pups start themselves on rabbits/hares, as they run loose. They have chased 100s by the time they are 7mo. I start hauling them with the older dogs for coyotes at 7-8 mo. If they arent fired up by 12 mo...they are just fired. Take care. -
Thanks fellas. 2k10-They generally run from 20-50lbs,(some a little smaller or bigger) but most of the ones I catch are in the 25-35lb range. Take care.

tlewis-That would be a good time for sure... You know they are thick when folks can get a pic in the daylight. Take care.

Its been an unusually warm Jan and Feb for us. We been getting rain instead of snow, and that has slowed the coyote hunting to a crawl. When the desert is wet it will swallow a truck up, so I have only been able to get out a few times in the last few weeks... Sunday morning its 30 so I decided to go try to find one before it thaws. My wife says she wants to go to, so we load 4 and head out. First thing, Im talking to Capps on the phone when she spots one out her side. Its on the other side of a fence, in the sage, so I stop hoping the dogs will see it move. They dont see it, and it uses a sm

The weather has been givin us fits. First froze solid and lots of ice, then a big mud hole. We cant run the desert in the mud, so Im praying for snow or a hard freeze. Sunday morning I get up and check the thermometer. A cold snap came in, and the ground is froze hard enough to go looking... Its supposed to warm up, and rain so I figure I only got a small window to go. I load the dogs at daylight and head out. The Cowboy was supposed to go, but his wife had other plans. Well plans changed, and he calls and says he is coming to. Im just getting to the first section when Capps calls. As luc

Dan-Its seems we are in the minority running our dogs on frozen ground... My ground is rough on dogs anytime of the year...if its not ice, its rocks... Oh well, the dogs dont know they cant run on it, so we will just keep on doin it wrong I guess... Take care.

Running Dogs in North America ( lets see them )
UphillDoc replied to Coyotehunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Coyotehunter-There are a few of us on here. Type "coyote" in the search bar and you will find some old posts/pics. Take care. -
bullmastiff-Both can happen, but usually just scuffed stoppers. Have only ever seen a couple broken toes, and a ripped nail wont give them much trouble...they are a long ways from their heart. Folks just have to know what their dogs are really capable of, what they are comfortable with, and go from there. If I only had a single dog I may be more cautious, but I have 5 dogs, so if one is sore, the others will fill the gap. Durability is a big factor in the dogs we breed. I have no use for speed without it. Also, dont know how others hunt, but I generally hunt 3-4 days in a row then 3-4 days of

bullmastiff-We run on frozen ground. If we didnt we wouldnt get much use out of the dogs. Our dry ground is nearly as rough, with the rocks and such we run on. I cant say if our dogs have better feet, as I have never seen any from your side of the pond. I do know some fellas from over there that have seen both, and they say our stags do have the best feet...but dont know it first hand. I do know "hotbloods" and even many 1/2 crosses can not take this ground, but the stags seem to do fine most the time. Take care.

tlewis-They have been around for years now. Moved in shortly after being reintroduced in Yellowstone. They are traveling b*****ds, and its a sure bet they will be over your way. We have a hunting season on them now, and they are found from the high mountain pine country clear down to the river bottom farmland. Where ever the deer and elk are...they are! I have a wolf tag, so if you see it again go ahead and kill it for me... mushroom-I will drop every dog I have (5) if I get in a spot to run at a single. I dont know how many dogs it will take to throw and hold one, but I know how many I w
