  1. Lets see who all has them here, and how you are using them. With the variety of game/terrain here the possiblities are endless. Heres one way I use mine. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. B.W., his coward friend that we took bear hunting, the Cowboy and I loaded up at midnight for a coon hunt. I wasnt going to take "Grace" (bullstag) but she loaded herself, and wasnt taking no for an answer. Im hoping I wont be sorry. B.W. and the Cowboy have the same dogs as on the lion above. We hit the river, and a few minutes into it the dogs strike. They head down to the water and then cross th
  2. Here is another hunt from the same weekend. This is a more commen type hunt. Sun-B.W. and I decide to give it a go on our usual ground, hunting out of the truck. We rig around for about 2 hours without a strike and find a spot that still has a snow drift too deep to drive thru... We are on our way out when the dogs strike. We dump the box and they head up roaring. We drive up to the top hoping to see them cross, but are behind them. They are into the next draw and are still roaring. They start to climb up the other side and I spot them and the bear. Its a big black bear and they are clos
  3. Little bit of background on me and my gyp, for those I dont already know. The gyp is "Grace" a bull x stag bred by B.M. (Badger on here) she is 25" and 70lbs. She has had everything from hares to bears, day and night, and is not yet 3. I live in Idaho, on the high desert. I can run jackrabbits (hares), and coyote out my back door to my hearts content, or travel 35 minutes and be in the pine mountains and chase lions and bears. We also have badger, coon, fox, and bobcat to keep ourselves busy. I have "Grace" and a young upcoming male "Gus" for lurchers now and will be breeding "Grace" in th
  4. Dan-Thanks for the pic, I will send you more. Would have been here sooner, but I actually had to work today... Kye-You and your spear are welcome anytime. Blister is high on my list, and if he was here it would probably be a done deal. I will try to answer all questions, so if I miss yours just ask it again... The collars are tracking collars. The bears do stand their ground, sometimes killing dogs sometimes not. When they stay on the ground to fight we call it a "bay up" and can walk in and see whats going on. Sometimes it gets plenty exciting. I will try to get some pics to Da
  5. Rolly-Kye is right, the only way to find out is to try it. If she is a good one, she will not only do the things you mentioned but far more! Dont pay attention to the folks that will tell you what they cant do, just let her show you what she can do. Hares to Bears, its all do able with a good lurcher... Take care.
  6. whin-Where the crosses you know of 1/2 sighthound or 1/4? Take care.
  7. Neil-Im always lost...LOL My dilema here is that most the "foxhounds" dont have the desire/ability to run to catch the coyote and most the "stags" dont have the desire/ability to keep a race going when they come unsighted. I live in high desert country with broken sage, so the dogs come unsighted regularly, but Im not interested in following hounds for hours because they wont push the game hard enough to catch it. I may end up with a pure hound, a pure stag, and couple crosses in my pack, or maybe two seperate packs of each pure when its done, but I would like to see if the crosses can do wel
  8. jrearthdog-I dont hunt in the "traditional" way for coyotes, so I dont really want a "traditional" type dog. Im sure they will not run a track as old or as long as a straight hound will, and thats a good thing, IMO. Im looking for sprinters that can keep a race going when it hits the cover, and hopefully push it back out into the open, or make the catch. Im fully prepared to fail at it, but have to see for myself if it will work or not in my type country. Take care.
  9. Thanks for the replys. Im not as concerned with a dog opening as most, as I use my dogs on everything from hares to bears, so sometimes a dog opening is even a welcome thing... Im hoping the cross will produce something "like a foxhound....only faster" Take care.
  10. Anybody bred/seen hound cross lurchers? Curious to what the results where, and on what game was the cross used/intended for? Take care.
  11. pegleg-I cant figure out how to post pics either...LOL If I ever do, I will post a pic of a bullstag for you. Take care.
  12. Kye-You should have been here this Fall. We had a bunch of bears treed low enough that you could have put that spear to use... summer/fall for bear, winter for lion, jackrabbits and coyotes year round...just pick your poison. Whos place in WY did you go to? That dog in the box looks real similar to the pup I got. Take care.
  13. ratkilla-You boys should have kept coming West. I would have taken you looking for a Mtn Lion to add to your bag. Tell Kye to hollar at me next time your over. Take care.
  14. Vladimir-It would be a very special dog indeed that could take our wolf single handed. Truth is, I cant imagine it, aside from a yearling or a cripple. You may already know, but its not commen for stags to take coyote single handed, and our wolf are 4-5x the size. If you ever see a 150lb male wolf in person, you will see they are a whole different beast. I dont know anything about the wolfs in Russia, so maybe they are a smaller version then our Timber wolfs? Your description of why the dog in the pic may not of had blood on it is correct, IMO. At least with coyotes, the stag that moves in a
  15. F.R.-Thanks. On another site they were talking about using the "Wizard" from Nite Lite for night hunting, and I wondered if that was enough, or if they needed a hand held as well. Would sure be handy if the head light was enough. Take care.
  16. Does anybody use a headlight (miner style/coon light) when calling or running the dogs? Take care.
  17. I got a bullxstag gyp to use on the lamp, but she not only catches jackrabbits (hares) in the day, she decided she was going to run bears with the hounds, and even barks treed...who'd a thunk it... Take care.
  18. angierooke-I have a mixed bag here. running dogs (stag and stagxbull), tree dogs (curs) and a couple bulldogs. I hunt year round, everything from hares to bears. Take care.
  19. All you need is dry ice, 99% alcohol, and a branding iron. Its quick and easy. Coondawgs.com has a freeze branding 101 post that will walk you thru it. Goodluck. Take care.
  20. I use my bullstag for everything from hares to bears. I got her to use on the lamp originally. She has done all I have asked of her, and even done a few things I never expected her to do. Take care.
  21. I know of a litter in Idaho that is 3/4 Stag, 1/8 whippet, 1/8 bull. Take care.
  22. I have had this argument with myself a 1,000 times, so I figured I would take it to the people...LOL Would you breed to a dog that was what you wanted performance wise, but not temperment wise? What faults in a working dog can you live with, and what cant you live with? Take care.
  23. I have a 50/50 StagxBull gyp that can catch jackrabbits (hares) in the daytime. If they break out of the sage they are in trouble, but she still catches one now and then inside the sage. I was told she wouldnt be able to catch any, but neither her nor I knew enough to not try them, and the rest as they say is history... Take care.
  24. Kye-Well I cant argue with any of that...I will call the man in OK when its time. I will be taking "Grace" and her brother to NV in 2 weeks for some coyote hunting. I will be with a govt hunter flying for coyotes, and picking up cripples with the dogs. Should be loads of fun. Take care.
  25. Im on SW Idaho. It is high desert. We have jackrabbits, coyotes, and badgers by the truckload...and miles to run them in... My gyp is a 1/2 cross Bull x Stag. I hunt on the lamp and from a calling station most the time, but wouldnt mind running more daytime jacks and coyotes. Im just not sure if I want to breed to a pure running dog or a 3/4+1/4 dog. Take care.
