Just to add a bit to what Dan said about Coyotes. Their hides will bring some money but you wont get rich off them thats for sure. The Coyote is a pretty amazing animal. It is hunted by thousands of folks here. Most places have no bag limit and open season year round. They are trapped, poisoned, called, run with dogs, shot from planes, killed in their dens and accounted for almost any way you can imagine, there are folks here whos JOB it is to hunt/kill coyotes year round, yet they still increase their numbers every year! They are as comfortable living in a big city as they are the remote wild

Dan-Thanks for posting the pics for me... A little about the pics. #1 Is the Baja rig. #2 Peep, Mach (hotbloodxstags) and Zorro (stag). Mach is a yearling just getting started. #4 Emma (stag) and Grace (bullxstag) #6 Emma, Grace, and Cookie (stagxwhippet) in the box. Rufus (stag) Lua (hotblood) Sage (hotbloodxstag) on the ground. The coyote in the middle was pushing 50 lbs. #7 Speedy and Deets. Speedy (stag) and Deets (Jagd) Speedy is only a 50-55lb gyp and is as fast a dog as I have ever seen. Deets even spent 28 hours, 389 feet in a pvc pipe with a coyote that weekend as well... #8 Bo (ho

I get a call from "Coyote Capps" asking if Im interested in running the dogs this weekend, as the weather (snow) is messing up his deer hunting plan. I say sure, but it will have to be in the afternoon because Im taking my youngest son "Ty" to get a rifle for deer/elk hunting first thing today. "Capps" has some errands to run and has to roust his cousin "Todd" out of bed as well, so afternoon will work fine. "Ty" gets a nice little Savage .270 and is tickled to death, but wants to go see the dogs run more than go sight the new gun in...I guess Im wearing off on him after all... When we get t

Thanks fellas. I will try to get some pics to someone that can post them for me. Im horrible about taking any during the excitement, but sometimes someone else in the rig will get a few for me...LOL Take care.

If I didnt have it before, I can GUAR AN FUKIN TEEE I got it now... Got together with the Capps boys, Idaho Steve, the Cowboy, and B.W for a bit of running yesterday. I had gotten a jump box in Loomis, and bought "Gator" back from "Workman" so I had to give them a go! I didnt drive all thru the night and only sleep 3 hours to not hunt when I got back...LOL I didnt have time to get it set in the truck cross ways (like normal) so I rigged it up for the dogs to come out the back of the pick up bed instead of over the side rails. Of course the peanut gallery all laughed and told me how it would

Rocks-Doing well. It looks like you are as well... Them type coyotes aint no joke, takes good dogs to sort them out. Im off to Loomis tomorrow for the big stag event! I got "Cookie" a couple running mates, and will give them a go as soon as I get back. Take care.

Pops-I have decided I will put her to a straight stag for sure, but have not decided on which one just yet. bird-Most stags are probably deerhound x greyhound type dogs, but they have had a little of this and a little of that (what ever got the job done on coyotes) added over the years. They run from 50-100+lbs...25-30+inches...smooth-hairy. The dogs are as varied as the different parts of the country they are hunted in, but the good ones all have one thing in commen and thats the ability to catch coyotes. Take care.

Kye-You know I will save you the biggun... Take care.

Thanks all, glad you enjoyed the story of our little clusterfuck... dogmandango-I did spend some time looking, but there is ALOT of ground they could have been in, so when I didnt find the source of the blood, I just loaded up. Joe Kelly-When I am hunting with adult stags I never have a gun with me. I was hunting an expierienced lurcher bitch, an 8 mo old lurcher pup, and a yearling stag gyp that is new to the calling game (I have had her less than a month) It was a perfect chance to introduce the pup and gyp to the game, gunfire, and the whole calling routine. Kye-Blister would

I load "Grace, Gus and Cookie" for a morning of coyote hunting. B.W is going bear hunting but I bow out. I decide to cast them thru a big, broken sage section and see if they can get one stirred up. Im driving along side real slow scanning the horizon and watching the dogs hunt up. I get thru the first section without seeing anything. As I drive across the next plateau, I get a call from "Coyote Capps" to tell me they may hit the running ground tonight if I want to go...hell yea I want to go. Im telling him what Im doing when I spot a coyote skylined to my left about 200 yards out. Needless to

Pops-Im taking nothing away from any of the accomplishments of good catch dogs and what they endure, my point was I dont believe you test for "gameness" that way. More dogs will take alot of punishment quickly than those that will continue to return to it over a long period. How many of those same dogs if broken off and rested would return to the task? How many would even look at the hog/bear the next day? Many will not. The rough game (hogs, bears) can deal out alot of punishment, but its not the constant sustained pressure that another game dog will bring, and thats what sorts the curs from

Rolly-The thing you have to remember about any other bull type breed (dogo, alaunt, ambulldog etc..) is they are a watered down version of the game bred bulldog. Sometimes thats what a fella needs, and it may turn out that the bulldogx hound, stag, or greyhound may work better than a pure bulldog would for some situations. If you want a dog to do a bulldogs job (catch), than a bulldog is the way to go, IMO. If your looking for something else, one of the others may be suited better to the task. Pops-I dont think it takes a "gamebred" dog to catch, but its the kind I would want... I dont k

Pops-The stud is still up in the air. I may go back to a stag or may take a chance on my young lurcher male "Gus" the pups will be 3/4 stag 1/4 bull or 1/2 stag 1/4 bull 1/4 Running Walker, depending on the stud. It will be a last minute decision Im sure...LOL Pups will be free to hunting homes. Take care.

Rolly-"Grace" was bred by "Badger" in OK. I think your new gyp "Twig" will be very similar to "Grace" when full grown. I do like watching the dogs work together as team better than one solo. I may be breeding "Grace" in the next month or so, and your welcome to one if it happens. Take care.

littletimmy-She didnt have but a nick from this one, but she does occasionally get more marked up. She usually throats them, and that keeps her from taking much stick. The dogs that dont get the throat, or that dont commit to killing one, are the ones that really pay the price. Take care.

stormrider8-If you take the "average" bear vs. "average" coyote, I think the coyote is harder to catch with dogs. A bear and a coyote bring different challenges to the table, but both will test your dogs. There are lots of dogs sorted thru to find the right kind for either game, and the only way I know to train a dog on its game, is to try it over and over and see which take to it. Indiana-Thanks. You should post some coyote stories yourself. Take care.

maxhardcore-Thanks you for the compliment. Here is the latest adventure with my lurchers. Yesterday I load "Grace" and "Gus" to go coyote calling in the morning. Its a perfect morning and Im ready. On the way to the spot I want to try calling the dogs jump a jackrabbit and have a nice warm up. It was in tall sage so it was never in any real trouble, but it gets our blood up. I pick a big sage to sit against. The set up is perfect. I have the wind in my face and rising sun to my back. Im near the top of a hill looking into a broken sage basin. The dogs are milling about near by. When I

Dan-Your pics got my blood up. I went calling this morning and got a big coyote to come play. I was supposed to coon hunt tonight with B.W. and the Cowboy but I said "nope, Im going looking for more coyotes in the morning!" Take care.
-
ratkilla-Your welcome to come hunt anytime. I want to see the spear dance myself. My expierience with bobcats and dogs is IF the dog is set on killing it, it is like a giant ditch cougar, but if the dog tries to mix or is only half hearted, it is like a monkey with a switchblade...LOL "Grace" does not have hound stamina, but you would probably be surprised how long she can stay hooked in a race. Her strength is the speed she can run the track and how hard she convinces the bear to climb when she gets there. In walk/bay and fight/break type races she will stay for hours, otherwise Im happy

Dan-Thanks for posting all th the pics. The last one of "Grace" is one of my favorites. Here is another "Grace" story. I decide to get some breakfast and head out with "Grace" (bullstag) and "Gator" (stag) to see if we can chase a jackrabbit or call in a coyote. The kids all have plans today, so Im on my own. I get to our first spot, and they get a jackrabbit up and running. "Grace" is pushing it hard, and "Gator" is hedging in from the right. They go about 120 yds and "Grace" has moved up to try to pick it up. The jack turns hard to the right and "Grace" misses, it cuts so hard that

Dan-That is the bear whos liver you ate...Ty is still talking about that and the rig box surfing... mackem-Thats was a pretty good boar, about 300-350lbs. Kye-A friend sent me the book and after I read it, I said "now I HAVE to try it" but Im not opposed to letting you go first... When we caught the lion I posted the story on, I wanted to scruff it for a pic, but nobody would grab the tail...they were afraid I would let go of my end when they did, just for some good video... Take care.
-
Dan-Your too modest...them dogs were dandies. Many of the UK fellas may not know much about coyotes, but there are dogs that can run one down, and there are dogs that can kill one, but they are rarely in the same package! Take care.

Hoss1-I think you will have lots of fun with yours, and I wont be surprised if this time next year you are saying "I wish I would have gottten one sooner" I know I did... P.Carter-Goodluck with convincing your mum. Many of my boyhood friends went astray, while I went hunting. All my children have come up following a dog, and I couldnt be happier with how they are turning out. Whin-Were you hunting with D. Hise and company? AdamR-Here in Idaho it is just a hunting liscense and tag bought over the counter. Nothing required to keep dogs. We have laws that prevent the likes of Peta f

Kye-If she is heat I will bring her for Blister. On the subject of bear stabbing, read the book by Meshach Browning "44 years the life of a hunter" its about a bear hunter from the US in the late 17 early 1800's that hunted with lurchers and a knife... Take care.

Kye-Hope we can hook up sometime. If I move to KS in the future, you can be sure Blister x Grace will happen. Im going to be at Loomis for the big running dog event in Oct. You should come over if possible. Grace may even be in heat at that time! Take care.
