  1. I shoot 75 grn Vmax in my .243 i shoot mainly foxes. In my opinion its a good compromise rnd. However my friend shoots only deer with his .243(works for the hunt ;-) and uses 100 grn factory and zeros at 150 both of us swear by our loads the 243 is just a very versatile rifle. but be aware when using a ballistic tip bullet on deer if you hit them wrong ive seen the mess you can make of the meat, fragments of the ballistic tip traveling lenght ways through the body cavity and shredding the fillet area of the saddle etc dont worry about barrel twist the .243 will always shoot just over
  2. I should probably make my position clear. I have shot 2 heavy vixens in the last week, both foxes were shot at about 15 yards with a .22 and a night sight while i was out rabbiting.(i use a .243 and night sight when im actually after foxes) We have 1 flock of sheep in my parish which are lambed indoors and no free range chicken farms. Bearing this in mind the need to kill every last single fox in my parish at this time of the year is questionable. I have a pheasant shoot over 750 acres. Myself and a part time keeper control all vermin on this land plus 500 acres of outlying land. We are pre
  3. I've only just joined this site but i've been lamping and pheasant shooting for 25 years, i have noticed just how much more popular foxing has become in all its forms. I would like to start a discussion on whether we should be shooting foxes all year round, Foxes mating in december & jan will mean heavy vixens in february and march and some vixens feeding young cubs underground. Most of the Hunts stop hunting at the beginning of march. Should we stop shooting foxes from February to the middle of May. so's not to orphan the young cubs I add a huge proviso to this which is that the foxes
  4. there are cubs in sets in certain parts of the country thats a fact,i agree, there are also alot of heavy vixens about. But! no cubs old enough to be bumbling around hedgerows on their own. I do wonder whether we should have a self enforced closed season on foxes from february to april unless they are taking lambs. This would ensure that we didnt orphan cubs still under ground
  5. Hi Guys - I'm new here! thought that i might start a topic which is hopefully non-contentious it does seem on any usergroup forum ive ever been on that max speed and distance/time of any vehicle, object or animal will result in forum slanging matches and grown men spitting their dummies. SO! i thought i'd turn the bragging thing upside down I want to know the closest you've ever shot a fox!? I shot a fox at approx 20 yards last week - its the second cloest ive ever shot, the closest being about 10 yards, both were squeaked off the back of my hand and they were both shot using a night sigh
  6. My mate has one in .243 loves it - 100 grn ballistics - shoots 3 shot groups to an inch at 150 paces!
