cooper101 replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Pointless...not harsh...clueless. notice the ?????? marks it was asking what people thought!! as yes i dont run them so was looking for a bit of education on them!!! clueless with dogs im not but when i dont understand a breed i like to get opinions so i can further my knowledge if you read right through this thread you will understand that i used the phrase pointless to ruffle some feathers and get som tounges wagging so people who had seen this breed could educate me further on it!! If you wanted to know about a breed/cross of dog why put "pointless." Because it sounds li -

Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???

thats the most backward comment ive ever seen!! if its the best catch dog ever seen and they so much better than collie x grey why ohh fookin why dont you own one man!! why are you settling for an inferior cross if this is the ultimate catch dog????? -

so from what i can gather from everyones opinions the majority of you feel that this is not a pointless cross!! and is a good rabbiting dog in its own right!!! thanks for all the input!! its a breed i steered clear of as i couldnt see the sense in the cross over others so knew very little about!! and i have read some good points!! now i would like to know as a fulltime lamping dog who would make this there first choice??? -

i know calling it a pointless cross was harsh i needed to get a reaction so that people would enter in this discussion with there opinions!! i like how fiercly defended the whippet x grey was and yor right i have very little experiance of them i just wanted to understand the cross more as i never felt the need for one over my current dog a collie x grey!! hope nobody was offended!!! Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???

i strongly doubt that!!!!! if it did it would be minimal!!! You judgin that on experience? im judging that on if i wanted to cross a good grey or a good whippet i would use a much better combinatin( i.e collie it adds lots more brain and more stamina than either of these two dogs put together thats the reason i put this post up to understand this cross!!! i'll take the whippet comment back there are one of the more intelligent sighthounds but thats not really saying much is it!!!! -

why would you love one of these if you like all the other attributes in yor dogs that youve listed?????? maybe I worded it wrong, I think they're excellent dogs for a purpose, mainly rabbits. the attributes I listed are those of a whippet grey. If I wanted a rabbiting dog I'd go for a whippet grey, probably a first x. Comprende? im not doubting there ability as rabbiting dogs i just wanted to understand why people used them instead of putting a better attribute acrossthere dogs first!! surley a bit of brain wouldnt go amiss for a rabbiting dog?? capishh!! -

Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???
cooper101 replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
HERES SOME REASONS FOR YA THE WHIPP/GREY, wil have more staminar than a pure grey, and more speed than a whippet, it wil genraly be larger than a whippet. this is the kind of answer im looking for !! im trying to find the good in the cross im not trying to slate it i just have never seen or heard a fair argument for why you use this cross!!!! -
Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???
cooper101 replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i dont see the reason in crossing the two together when there are plenty of good small greyhounds about and on the other side of the fence i have seen lots of whippets thats could quite easily pass off as greyhounds to the untrained eye!! why not use one of these instead of mixing the two together???!! im looking for the reason to cross them together what good does it do the dog in the long run?? if you cross a whippet with a collie its to add brain!! if you cross bull to a grey its to add gameness!! like i said anyone tell me how whippet xgreyhound benifits the dog?? -
I have noticed a few people commenting on whippet x greyhounds and i have always understood it to be a pointless cross!! why wouldnt you just get a small greyhound or a large whippet instead of mixing up the blood!! only an opinion!! all views welcome agree or disagree!!! thanks

it all have to be the half cross to make to make some nice 3/4 greyhound x 1/4 collie pups!! you shouldnt have any problem selling the pups providing you get a good working half cross too sire the pups!! but if you are set on giving any away i'd be only to happy to add a second dog to my kennel as my current 3/4 grey x 1/4collie is two years old now and im ready to start training another pup to add to the team!! all the best with that and if you need any help finding a good working sire let me know and i'll see if i can put you on to anyone!!

where are people using their dogs?
cooper101 replied to samearl14's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
sorry but in response to your (in the my 51yrs and it is my opinion that there is no place for it in a working lurcher, the greyhound already has bull in its history, and it was kept to a small percentage for a reason,I realise the benefits it gave the breed, stamina, drive and aggression to name but a few.) wat planet have you been living on my friend 51 years old and your trying to say that the greyhound the purest of dog breeds and one of the oldest has bull in its heritage!! i have heard it all now get real my friend and do some history on dogs a good place to start would be a greyhound!! all -
i'll carry on nearly all year round as i have to walk my dog anyway plus my landowners want the numbers down!!! ive still got places smothered at night with rabbits but i leave them till later in the season so i can have sport as long as possible!! sumtimes i go ferreting othertimes lamping maybe even longnet for a change!! when i start seeing babies i finish the ferreting but i'll have a lamp on a summer night you never know whats about!! all the best

i would stay true to type a 3/4 collie 1/4 greyound would be a good mix!! you can throw a few more breeds in if you like but keep it simple remember you have to sell the pups and you dont want people bieng put off when you cant garuntee what they are going to take after more!! only an opinion!! nice bitch fella !!
-
3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie is a good starting dog!! there a good dog for mixed bags and make fantastic ferreting dogs!! also good to train as there clever i wouldnt go half cross as a starter dog as they can be a bit to clever!! hope this helps!!!

any one working pure collies or 3/4 collie 1/4 grayhounds
cooper101 replied to davidlloyd's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i run a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie from hancock fantastic rabbiting dog on the lamp and ferreting!! hes a big boy at 26" but that doesent stop him by far the best dog ive had so far and his intelligence has helped me out big time when it came to training hes a fast learner and was running like and old pro soon after his first few outings!! im glad i took the gamble of running what i knew and was used to running sulukie x greyhound and switching to a collie x!!
