As Muttley mentioned, I discuss summer flying in The Complete Rabbit & Hare Hawk. However, this kind of flying with a hunting hawk has to be gone about carefully. I would recommend lure pursuits (out of the hood) and a training field the hawk only associates with such pursuits. Martin

Hi Rowan, Me putting up with you? More you putting up with me – the poor hopelessly obsessed author! I haven't done any of the fairs for quite a while – something I should perhaps rectify because there is nothing nicer than someone coming over for a chat and to get a book signed. Anyway, glad you have enjoyed the books over the years. All the best, Martin

Funny but I've been thinking of getting back to fishing. It was my introduction to fieldsports, coming just before falconry: boyhood missions to secret little lakes that technically should never have known my innocent little float! -

I totally agree. It's the wind, the rain; the bad back - the hangover! It's when everything goes right. It's when everything goes wrong! It's the build-up, the anticipation - the never knowing. It's all the different elements that come together to serve up a fresh experience every time you grab your glove and rucksack. -

Arcticgun. You asked about The Harris Revolution by Tom and Jennifer Coulson. This massive book is crammed with information on the Harris - from natural history to captive breeding. With training and hawking it deals almost totally with group/gang hawking (the Coulsons never fly single hawks) - so very different to my own Harris flying. Martin -

For any bargain hunters out there I have a few 'slight seconds' from the last printing. £15 inc post. All the best, Martin -
Hi Obi, There is a bit of pheasant hawking here if you have a few minutes to kill. http://business.virgin.net/fernhill.press/extract7.htm All the best, Martin

Hi Hawk1, Glad you enjoyed the book. I’ve always had a fascination for German and Austrian eagle falconry and I wanted to underline the vital role both countries played in getting the eagle established. Let me wish you well with your own eagle falconry plans. They truly are incredible birds. All the best, Martin

Thanks Bob, All the best for the New Year. Martin

Not staged at all IMHO, it takes years and years to train the birds and from studying Ghengis Khan, this has been going on for centuries. This is worth a read; http://www.mongoliat....com/eagle.html In Memoirs of a Hunter, Friedrich Remmler recalls boyhood wolf hawking with Kazakh falconers. An extract here: http://business.virgin.net/fernhill.press/extract5.htm Martin

I can’t recall the exact details but many years ago I’m sure that Lorant de Bastyai and the great falconer George Lelovich, trained a white tailed sea eagle for film work in Hungry and had the bird take carp from a lake. I think the fish were carried to the to the bank. Martin

The bird actually got the hare off the ground then let it go, or lost hold of it, and returned to the glove in a big sweeping turn without pausing! It was a terrific demonstration of sheer flying power. I think the potential of the sea eagles is often overlooked. The bald eagle has certainly shown itself capable of very exciting flights. Hares have been taken with this species, as have ducks! Martin

About 25 years ago, an Austrian friend took a male bald eagle to a field meeting in today’s Slovakia. The bird was a last-second stand-in due to the tragic death of his male golden eagle. The bald eagle had been used for demonstrations and taught to fish rewards from the surface of a pool. Well, on the first day of the meet, I watched this eagle fly out on a massively long slip and ‘fish’ a fully-grown brown hare right off a ploughed field! Martin
