  1. Took all the dogs for a run round the farm on the quad yesterday and stopped of for a swim half way as it was very humid. My lurcher bitch came out of the lake and started to scream like I've never seen before and rolling around on the floor. At first I thought she had got something in her foot but when I got hold of her leg it was clear that the muscles were as tight as hell so thought - Cramp. Sure enough, after I stretched her out and calmed her down she was fine. We moved off at a steady pace but it wasn't long before she cramped up again. Stretched her out and trotted her home
  2. I havnt been doing a lot with my 2 year old bitch for a couple of months - only a bit of ratting. Took her out tonight when I went rabbit shooting so that she could do some retrieves. I spent a lot of time when she was younger on her retrieves and she hd always been very reliable. Tonight however, she was crap. All she was interesting in was killing the rabbit, dragging it along for a bit then leaving it. She would not even attempt to bring it to me. Just wondering what the best approach would be to getting back to retrieving properly? She will bring a tennis ball back faultlessly bu
  3. If its a group thing, careful you don't end with a yapper. I hadnt thought of that, i will keep an eye on it. Thanks
  4. I am starting to train mine for Flyball - looks like a laugh.
  5. I was walking my lurcher through the forest yesterday when I met a couple with about 10 dogs on leads coming towards me. The dogs looked like very small Saluki types or even small afghan hounds. As my bitch was bounding around and winding all these dogs up, I got chatting to the owners. They explained that the dogs were Silken Windhounds and that they were an American bread. Anyone come across these kind of dogs before? I suppose they could be used for coursing Jack Rabbits over there - too small for anything else?? The pic below (if it loads) is from google, just to show you
  6. Matured surprisingly quickly - given what everyone says about these. She is, however, the most injury prone dog i have ever owned. Feet as soft as f**k - seems to be one week on, two weeks off!!
  7. Good news - the lump was just an abscess. Vet made a small cut in it and that was that - job done. Im made up with the result as she is a good worker. Good bit of rest and shes back in the field. Many thanks for all the advice. J
  8. I think its a bit low down to be the tooth, its more on her throat / neck. Ive booked her into the vets this evening so i will know more then.
  9. Ive got a 5yr old Jill ferret that has suddenly developed a very large, hard swelling underneath her right cheek. She is noticeably under the weather - loss of appetite and stands still with her eyes closed from time to time. I've put her on some high protein wet food last night but she seems worse today. Any ideas?? I really don't want to prolong her suffering anymore than i have to but if there is a good possibility of her pulling through, I would be grateful to know what can be done. many thanks
  10. Is this show on this year? Cant find anything on the internet. J
  11. Slow paced trotting is the so important in my opinion. Important for increasing stamina, building up the heart and lungs as well as toughening up the tendons and ligaments and their feet. A dog that has done the road work is in my opinion "properly fit" and it really shows on the long days or nights hunting when you are asking the most from the dog. I never really bothered with road work before until last year and I have to say that the difference is amazing. To be honest, its got to be a combination of trotting and the fast sprint work but that's just how i do it, Each
  12. I usually give mine a tuna and wholemeal pasta mix in the morning before a nights lamping or in the evening before a mornings mooching. My bitch seems to be full of energy after eating it which suits me well. Only thing ive ever been warned about is running your dog on a full stomach, so I never feed within 7-8 hours of working her. Just my opinion, im sure others will have there own routine. J
  13. Going to get mine done this summer then for sure. Ive used vet wrap for horses in the past which is good by as Skycat says, once there damaged they are always vulnerable.
  14. Mine still has her dew claws as well, I was hoping to get them removed at the same time as they are always getting damaged. Will the vets do it without an injury there, anyone had it done to their mutts???
  15. Getting my bitch's stoppers removed this year. I've lost so much time through her ripping them.
  16. Hats off to you boys. I hope never to be put in that situation myself. Your a credit to the job
  17. Thanks for all the advice, very much appreciated. I will keep at it and hopefully the penny will drop. I will be trying the tennis ball through the fence as well. I'm out again at the weekend with the pugs so we will try again, ill try and get some pictures up. Thanks again for all the advice J
  18. Thanks for all the replies. I do put a lot of time to teaching her to jump over a range of things. I dont think confidence is the key. She will retrieve her dummy over fences, gates and logs no problem. I think the problem is associating the rabbit going under the fence with her needing to go under the fence, in the same way that when i throw her dummy over the fence, she goes over to get it. I think i need to start throwing her dummy through the fence instead of over it, what do you think?? Thanks again for the replies J
  19. the clulite ones have a hole cut in the centre, dont blame me if you f**k it up though Haha, yeh could be tricky! How big is the hole in the Clulite?? Small drill bit size or bigger?
  20. I have a 18 month old bitch that is doing really well. The only problem I am finding recently is that when the rabbit goes under the fence or gate or hedge, she tries to go through the same hole instead of jumping over. As you can imagine, this has lead to some nasty grazes, bruising and a lot of escaped bunnies!! She is more than capable of jumping a five bar gate and jumping into the back of the truck no problem but when her blood is up, all this goes out the window!! Anyone come across this problem or think of any ways to solve it?? J
  21. I've got a red filter for my lamp but it cuts the beam down that much that i find it difficult to lamp with it. Is there any merit to drilling a small hole in the center of it to allow a bit more light through to increase the length of the beam?? Rabbits round me are so switched on to the lamp now, the filter is essential! J
  22. Cracking animals mate, you can see the work been put into them the black bitch is the spit of mine, all the best with them J
