I do a fair bit of digging and Ive never noticed it being cold down there. Ask yourself this, if its colder underground why during a cold spell is it only ever the top few inches of soil that freezes? Also worked for a time as a groundworker, used to dig down deep and never taken freezing cold soil out of the holes.
-
This is what I mean about insulation, couldn't a cave be cold in summer because its underground and insulated from the heat? I believe a rabbit warren would be cooler underground than the surface temp in summer and warmer underground than the surface temp in winter. That makes sense to me but Ive never taken thermometers ferreting with me so I cant be 100% lol.
-
Yeah but isn't that just because the ground acts as an insulator? A bit like a thermos flask keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. So I would have thought it would be a bit warmer underground. Also if its so cold down there why do the rabbits go to ground when it gets really cold?
-
Id have thought it would be a little warmer below ground. I was out ferreting in the big freeze which I think was in 2010? the ferrets dealt with the cold fine.
-
Unless theyre kept in damp conditions no way. Its not even cold yet anyway.

The thing with nets is if you can set a net anywhere rabbits travel you can catch them. Don't be afraid to try different things, some will work and some won't but unless you try you will never know. TC It was nice catching a rabbit with a new method. I also have 3 separate spots where Im thinking about trying a night time drop, never tried night time longnetting before so should be interesting.
-
I hadn't realised this was a common method, I don't work a dog but I can see how that would make things easier. Ill give it another go soon.

I was out ferreting the other day having a bit of a crap morning due to there being very few rabbits to ground, I got bored and surrounded a large patch of stinging nettles with my long net, got in there and bashed about with my spade and drove a rabbit out into the net. Does anyone else use longnets in this way? Also has anyone ever tried laying a longnet between a crop that is being cut and the rabbits warren?

Theyre looking good. Ive got 2 hob kits about 4 1/2 months cant wait to start them. I had a ferret die a couple of months ago so its left me a bit undergunned for a couple of the bigger warrens on my land so Im tempted to give the more mature of the 2 a start in a few weeks, not something Id usualy consider but needs must.

Not sure about acorns, I often find ivy berrys in the hutch after feeding pigeon as well as peanuts from someones birdtable. Also grain from the grainstore down the road. During WW2 some people used to use acorns to make a coffee substitute so they aren't toxic to humans so Id imagine ferrets would be unaffected.

Id imagine any of the net makers would do you some in braided nylon, sure Ive heard that threelander does braided nylon and he has a reputation as a good net maker.

She play about most the time she was out, then just wanted to go around on the surface and not go down the hole, what can I do with her? Do you feed them rabbit? I was told by a fella at work to feed dry thru summer coz of the flies then winter time feed em raw rabbit wi fur n lot as their main food source then dont give em any for a day or two before hunting and they will be chomping at the bit. He also said its a fine line between hungry to hunt and hungry to kill and eat and stay down but thatll come with trial and error I guess. You've been given some crap advice there, no need to sta

If I was going to buy a complete set of new nets Id go for braided nylon, its a brilliant material, doesn't pick up loads of twigs and crap and is nice and easy to handle. Spun poly would come a very close second for me, comes in bright colours which makes them hard to lose.
-
Only been making my own nets for around 4 years so have never knitted hemp, have used them years ago though and I like the way they handle. I like both spun poly and braided nylon, Id say the braided nylon is slightly better amongst brambles and twigs because its a bit heavier, the spun poly is a lot nicer to knit with though.

Did you use agouti? I think fourteenacre have taken over his business .

Ive never had any of mine jabbed and not had any problems with distemper.

When you say flash bangs I assume youre talking about alarm mines that take a blank shotgun cartridge? I have a few of these myself. Im lucky where I am as well as having a big noisy dog myself my next door neighbours have a few terriers which bark at any movement in my garden so thieves would have a hard time getting to any of my gear.
-
If your way works for you that's fair enough. But I will say its not lay ups you need the locator for, Ive never dug down to a ferret that's asleep, locators are used to dig to ferrets that are in the process of killing a rabbit (because most ferrets wont stay with a dead rabbit for long) or digging down to ferrets that are scratching at a rabbits arse in a stop, then theres always a very slight risk your ferret could get trapped behind a rabbit he has killed so would definitely need digging to.

Started using these about 4 years ago http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-X-HEAVY-DUTY-CAMPING-6-15CM-PLASTIC-TENT-PEGS-/291055500718 cheap as chips and work really well.

I need to bang an Amazonian woman and breed me a giant to do the digging when I get old.
-
If you don't dig to keen ferrets you are leaving rabbits underground, also you will spend a long standing around waiting for ferrets to surface.

The pies look good, Ive not made a rabbit pie since the season before last, I think Ill do a load of rabbit pies, rabbit burgers and rabbit curry to freeze down this year.
-
The only mushrooms Ive managed to identify beyond a shadow of a doubt are field mushrooms and parasol mushrooms, most of what I find seems to have a deadly lookalike and you need to be a scientist to tell the difference, bloody frustrating. Maybe Ill start growing mushrooms seems safer lol.

Off Out For The First Trip Of The Season Tomorrow 30/08/2015

It's got to be each to their own Jim. If we are nipping out for an hour then the odd fly isn't gonna bother us and you're hardly gonna work up a sweat. You lads do 8-10 hour shifts plus traveling. It's a bit different. Same with the lads who say dogs need resting in the summer. My dogs will never do enough through the winter to need a rest through the summer. People forget we aren't all the same. I crack on regardless of what people think, as I said in another thread a while back if I waited or the cover to die back Id start in December and if I stopped the second rabbits star -
Sounds like Im getting off lightly compared to some lol, if I got a reading at 8ft Id be opening a bunny up to try to draw the ferret out.
