  1. Cheapest, but possibly not the 'best'. It depends on your definition of 'best'. What in your opinion is the best all round vermin rifle in small calibre if it is not the 17hmr? the reason I am put off the 22 hornet is the price of rounds!!!
  2. thanks for all the advice mate. Dont know what to do as i saw a really good deal on a 17hmr and am so temted.... I wouldnt be able to afford both so it has to be one or the other... I d need the 17 for vermin control on a new shoot i took over so i dont know what to do??? cheers boy
  3. I see a hw for sale. It didnt say but what sort of power would that have in 22 cal. Im lookin for about 20 ft/lbs so fingers crossed. cheers boy
  4. I think I ll probably go for a 17 hmr. 60 euro for a box of 22 hornet rounds is not on at all. I could use the 17 on magpies rabbits and crows safely at abount 150 yards and also fox at about 70 so it gives me the best all round vermin rifle in small calibre. cheers boy
  5. Yes mate good on fox to a maximum of 180 to 200yds, not too bad on rabbits if you use the correct bullet, i use sierra 40 gn ballistic tip for fox and berger 35 gn hollow point for rabbits. cheapest option is to reload (if you can ) factory ammo can be expensive. just as comparison .17 hmr = 250 ft lbs energy. -- .22Hornet 700 ft lbs energy Great little calibre LD Cheers mate! i would be lookin to use it for magpies and crows mostly with the occaisional fox. I know its hard to say but could you quote a price for a box of rounds for the hornet? I wouldnt be blazin away so i do
  6. anyone on here fish the barrow for roach or bream or roachbream hybrids. I ve had some nice bags off it but im wonderin does anyone now some good spots along the lower reaches? around grauighnamanagh and bahana wood? cheers, boy
  7. I saw a good deal on a 22 hornet. I was wonderin would this be good on foxes out to about 150 yards? Thinking of buying a vermin rifle and thought this might be the awnser. Would shooting a rabbit/crow with this be obvious overkill? I would be looking for an all round vermin rifle so it is between this and a 17hmr. Which one would you go for? ( i Know that a 17 would not be good on foxes to 150 but would be more than capable at about 70 ) cheers, boy
  8. well i could jus get a 22 rimfire or a 17 hmr for those ranges but i prefer the fieldcraft of stalking rabbits and also i can use it in the farmyard for the ferals fairly safely without too much worry about backstops. cheers for the advice, atb boy ps: edgar and andy when you said a rifle could be tuned to a higher power is that an easy job to do? could i do it myself ? I presume you could only get 1 or 2 extra ft/lbs from it or could you get more? cheers' boy
  9. thanks for all the advice lads. Please keep it coming as I dont want to make a purchase that i will regret later. cheers boy
  10. Thanks for the advice mate... I dont have a huge budget so what do you think you would pick up one of those gas ram ones for? I am wanting to spend about 350 euro so do you think I would get a second hand one with all the trimmings for that ? Cheers, boy
  11. Im from ireland so i need to get a gun licence for an air gun no matter what the power is. This is why i want something thats good for about 40 yards for ferals and crows around the farm and also rabbits. I would much prefer a spring so i would not consider a gas powered one. Thanks for the advice and would you know would there be much sound from a spring gun. atb boy
  12. Berreta urika 26 inch barrels, 5 chokes, camo finish, 3 inch chambers, about £350+ in mint cond second hand. Can not go wrong for wildfowling or pigeons. atb boy
  13. Hi everyone, Would a break barrel air gun with power between 18 to 20ftlb be ideal for knocking down rabbit and pigeon out to 40yrds. Considering a purchase of an air gun but would want plenty of stopping power for larger pests. It will be .22 cal. All advice greatly appreciated. Cheers, boy
