  1. cheers zini. my mate who first told me about them said he'd originally got them for sea trout with the smaller lures. the set i've ordered is a 158 peice set with a variety of sizes from 3" upwards. i've got access to a few trout waters so maybe i'll give them ago instead of the fly rod. i presume you still use a trace for the larger lures after pike?
  2. i think they are originaly a bass lure although the website had some pictures of big pike taken with them in the us.
  3. started pike fishing again after a long break (about 11 years) and have pretty much picked up were i left of using spinners and plugs. a mate of mine told me about a type of lure he picked up a few years ago called banjo minnows. looked them up on the internet they are an american lure and i have to say i am really impressed. the footage of them working in the water was superb. decided to order a set and give them a go. i'm just asking to see if many people are using them over here and with what success?
  4. i think your right colliejohn there always has been a rift between coursing and shooting which is a real shame. hunting and terrier work have managed to carry on within the law but there was no chance for running dog lads. hopefully the ban has put the shits up those who shoot and fish but don't hunt or course so they realise they need to get behind overturning the ban and stick together in the future or we are all f****d. money does talk but shooting folk need to realise that they can't just ditch the hunters to save there own skin it won't work.
  5. i have seen both sides shooting and coursing. for a healthy population its running dogs or hounds everytime. the fittest animals will get away weaker animals will be caught and killed IF done responsibly at the right times of year. shooting is a quicker way of reducing the population which in some areas may be required however as some others have said you cannot tell a good hare from a bad when your swinging through with a shot gun. you will reduce numbers shooting but not neccisarly leaving the best. with dogs its either killed or it gets away. the real arseholes were those behind the ban. i
  6. thats f*****g terrible encouraging the local busy body to be antis and report anyone they don't like the look of because they walk a terrier or lurcher. happened to me and some mates we were ratting using a smoker on a muck heap in the middle of a field. next thing we new two police cars lights and sirens come on police running towards us. turns out a passing motorist decided we were badger baiting. that was sorted out on the spot but the last thing anyone wants is people taking an interst in their business.
  7. out over the weekend using my deben mk 1 which packed up on me. dig was no where near the scale of that one but still a lot worse than it should of been. made my mind up there and then to invest in a b+f and reading that post has definately proved the b+f's worth.
  8. i do not do a great deal of terrier work hence i am still using a mk 1 ferret collar taped to a terrier collar (no b+f for me yet feel free to take the piss!). the problem i have is i can't find anywhere local selling batteries for the collar. last lot i had were duracell hearing aid. the ones i brought are the same speck but a fraction too big. i showed the old batteries to a bloke in diy shop he said he can't get them anymore. if anyone knows were i can get some mail order? too tight for a b+f at the mo the amount i use it!
  9. don't know if this would work as well with boar as it does with pigs our cheats way of scalding the bristles. hang the pig and you can take most the bristles off using a pressure washer on steam no chance of water cooling no endless scraping and less chance of scalding yourself! reckon boar could be a bit too bristly.
  10. butchering all the deer i shoot so tend to head or neck shoot, no chance of any meat damage. would be confident in head shooting a boar with the .243 but i'd hate to fall foul of our well thought out laws though! on a slightly different note, what are boar like to butcher have done a domestic pigs and we scald the bristles. do you have to skin boar and how easy is it?
  11. always used .243 for on muntjack, chinese, roe, fallow, red and all my foxing. wouldn't want to buy a bigger calibre just for boar as i feel its overkill for the smaller deer species which are the bulk of my shooting. prefer to stick to one rifle using it almost everyday i'm confident with putting the bullet where i want it.
  12. do you need to have proof of boar in your area if your ticket is already open? my ticket states i can use my .243 for deer and vermin control and in connection with the management of any estate other wildlife. i take it that includes boar? i know people who have shot boar abroad using a .243 is there a minimum calibre in this country? are you changing to .308 of your own accord or because the firearms officer suggested it?
  13. a picture of yours would be cool mate :thumbs-up: will try to get some pictures. hes four and a half months at the moment the sire was athletic type of alsatian working in prison over an ex track greyhound. still interested in any pics of adult crosses and what people used them on pre ban. looks like he'll be capable of large stuff when old enough.
  14. I'm new to the site and new to lurchers in general. just got an alsation greyhound first cross. does anyone have an experience of alsatian lurchers? be interested in any photos of adult dogs.
