Restrictions To General Licence?
danw replied to StephenWalsh's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Do people not understand the general licence, it gives us leave to shoot birds (no mamals are under the General licence) which are normally protected under certain circumstances and given certain criteria is met, since people have widely abused this then there is no wonder the powers that be wish to show their teeth. Lets be honest how many times do we see in the puffgun section "just nipped out for a pigeon for tea" this is and was always illegal its just we turn a blind eye well not anymore so we all have our selves to thank -
amber, ffs where have these people been looking. last week i counted over 70 between 2 canal bridges a distance of no more than half a mile According to what I see late spring here the Hen Harrier isn't faring too bad, The male did a fly by every day at 5-5:30 I might just have to rely on what other experts say of its status nationally though you saw one bird and you think it isn't faring too badly? If you'd have seen 70 then you are well within your rights to state that they must be doing well, but one? Sarcasm, my point is counts need a lot mo

So You Want To Be A Keeper???
danw replied to danw's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I think what lads need to realise is that keepering should never be about the sport/shooting you may get but it is all about the sport you provide all the way from the beaters smacking rabbits, to taking people stalking, the hunt finding and of course shoot days to me the greatest pleasure will always be seeing others enjoy what I've worked so hard to achieve that's where the real satisfaction from the job comes, the times I've taken some one to shoot their first rabbit, deer, pheasant etc will always stand out in my mind just as clearly as it does for those that experienced it. -

Every estate I've keepered the rabbits where considered the keepers perk even to the point of being mentioned in my contract and funnily enough I've never had complaints from the estate about the numbers there are always plenty of beaters willing to sit on the back of the truck and shoot my holiday fund for me -
If your only talking of up to 45kg then I'd be sticking it in a roe sack lots easier than dragging

No being funny but if the estate manager called someone in to sort the rabbits then it's to be expected that the contractor will be treated with contempt,On nearly every estate politics ensure that the keeper and estate manager are at conflict ( each usually vying for the highest point of the pecking order)seems to me socks rightly or wrongly your going to end up right in the middle of it hence the keepers attitude to you. -
Come on then lads what makes you want to keeper? For those that are in the job is it what you expected? For those not there yet what do you think keepering offers you? Be interesting to here from those that left the job do they regret it? is life outside better and would they return?

folks don't insure their cars what makes you think they would insure their dog? Yes but thats illegal..........law is law.....if you break it you face consequences if caught. And just how is it enforcible are the police going to check every dog they see will every dog have to be chipped and would that prove ownership? there are an estimated 10.5 million dogs in the uk who will check or even find all of them?

danw replied to Wales1234's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Honestly anyone with another trade setting out down this route needs their head examined the job market for keepers is non-existent I've spoken to 3 keepers in the last fortnight who are due for redundancy and can't get a job these lads aren't wannabes they are good experienced keepers,I spoke to one headkeeper last week he had advertised a beatkeepers post he had over 350 applicants in the first week and he claims most are lads with experience, with more shoots closing and no new ones starting this situation will not get better. -

Why is it that those that speak out against faith never seem to be able to do so without the use of profanity?
