With the right training and entering they can take anything from small birds up to brown Hares, they have even, on rare occasions,taken canada goose and small deer.Obviously the males are better at the small stuff and females better at the larger stuff.

I hope if you keep to traditional methods you go ferreting on foot or by horse and cart, oh and traditionally you wouldn't have any keys unless you were lord of the manor. Yes I know I'm miserable old b*****d.

Hi Jai, thanks for the offer, I don't get about so much these days so I doubt I'll take you up on it but it's very kind of you. I don't realy ferret for ferretings sake anymore, I fly harris hawks these days, so its just a means to an end.I'm 58 and have not been without ferrets since I was 8, so I've done my fare share, ferreting to nets, guns, lurchers and hawks.Oh not forgeting ferreting rats to terriers. Rabbits have been a bit thin on the ground up this end this season though,so I've finished till next season. atb Mike.

I'm in the north mate, and I don't intend breeding any this year,I only breed when I need some myself. I'm a bit out of the way, most folk don't want to travel far for ferrets, and the locals don't want them till the season starts, they want you to feed them all summer, then turn thier noses up if they have to pay a fiver, they always know somebody that sells them for 3 quid, but odly enough they end up buying mine. atb mike. there you are we're on first name terms

Where exactly did i say that i didnt like 'quality working polecat ferrets, without genetic problems'? I mean i keep them, so that would be a bit silly wouldn't it. Can't remember much else, seem to remember a bit of a wood down one side of the field, the beer tent, a good selection of nobs, travelers and rogues, oh and some of the lads coursing in the adjacent fields, plus the usual falling out over the racing.

I went, must be 30 years ago now. All I can remember is it was held on a sloping field with the racing on a flat bit at the botten. Not much help I know. :blush: im holding it on a paddock before it was moved to seven barrows where the sloping field is. how old were you at the time? I would have been in my 20's mate, seven barrows rings a bell, I drove down from the midlands with a couple of mates.

yes mate your with me on this one want be long be having a thread that says do more liver spainels catch more than the black and white ones lol god the way some people think It doesn't alter the fact that whites have genetic problems that polecats haven't got. Wow 38 yrs, we will agree to differ, I bow to your superior knowledge, after all I've only been breeding and working ferrets for 50 yrs. your trumped mate . well you should no better then should'nt you, go off experiance not of a load of bollocks of the internet common sense should tell you albino x polecat not pure blood no matter what colour the offspring you'd of thought after 50yrs you'd of learnt something i doubt if theres any pure bloob albino's about they've all been crossed you know worker to worker I'll leave you with your bollocks mate, your telling me a bit of expe

I'm not saying albino ferrets are no good, they have poor eyesight, which doesn't matter underground as nothing can see in zero light,they are prone to defective hearing , which is of slightly more concern but again they seem to cope. Scent is obviously the main factor underground. I just like my ferrets firing on all cylinders, so I use polcats with a high % wild polecat blood.

I would't take to much notice of the old boys either, they are the ones who used to sew up the lips, snap of teeth, feed bread and milk and flatten most ferrets at the end of the season with a shovel.

Don't want to pee on anybody,s chips but research shows that albino ferrets have genetic proplems which effects both their sight and hearing, so they're not quite the same. dont think they'll be any pure strains of albino's left most have been crossed with polecats generations ago just personal preference, as long as it works cos not all ferrets are the same all pink eyed whites are pure albinos mate. so when you breed an albino x polecat and some of the litter throws albino and some of the litter throws polecat the albino offspring are pure are they, i dont think so mate
